Lebanese are “Clever Entrepreneurs”? Very funny, the ultimate in irony

Note: Re-edit of “Clever Entrepreneur my Ass”: Who is the Lebanese Entrepreneur? March 31, 2011″

As the State of Lebanon is experiencing total bankruptcy at all levels, government, Central Bank and many dozens of private banks for barely 4.3 million pseudo-citizens, we still keep hearing of “How come these clever entrepreneurs allowed Lebanon to reach this bottom in our financial/economic conditions?”

Clever Entrepreneur my Ass

I have worked with a few Lebanese companies, abroad and in Lebanon, and my impressions are negative.

“What is clever entrepreneur my ass” is my honest opinion of how I perceive the mentality of doing business in our culture.

In 1980, I worked with a Lebanese company in Nigeria; the company contracted out public civil works, like highways, deforestation and spreading asphalt on major roads.

I was supposed to be assisting the plant manager for maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment in a remote town.

The engineers were to wear high brown boots, the kinds that fascist wore, for discrimination reasons; and the boots have to be shining in this mud riddled camp, boots shined by an African helper.

Engineers were not supposed to socialize with workers and mechanics, even if they were Lebanese.

Consequently, going out with mechanics was frowned at, and management would sanction me and tell me that workers would refrain from respecting me and obeying my orders….

I was not even permitted to read to the mechanics the contents of the repair and maintenance manuals originating from the manufacturer:  Only the engineers and plant manager were to be the knowledgeable persons in the camp.

You had these mechanics who sincerely wanted to learn how to do their job right: they wanted to buy the proper tools and how they work, once they open their own shops back home.

Mechanics wanted knowledge and I translated to them from English into Arabic terms, even if the translation was Not that accurate, but they knew what I was conveying in knowledge.  Management hated what I was doing and scorned me.

For example, one night, robbers killed four Nigerian guards in our camp.

I never received any information whether management visited the bereaved families in the small village or if they paid compensation.  I was glad that I was repatriated shortly after this gruesome attack.

In Lebanon, I worked on a civil project, constructing a coastal hotel.

There were no safety guidelines at the workplace.  The Indonesian and Indian workers slept in the large open basement, and nobody was in charge of checking on the habitat or their well-being.  The workers favorite pastime was catching rats to fry them as delicacy.

A UN report stated that Chinese minorities in South-East Asia, white people in South Africa, and Lebanese in western Africa benefited most from the wealth generated by globalization and open markets in developing countries, particularly in tandem with multinational companies.

The African leaders who opted to cajole the ethnic majority ended up harassing, robbing, and pressuring Lebanese entrepreneurs out of the country, like in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

And obviously, Israel was behind the persecution of Lebanese entrepreneurs as most of the Presidential guards in African States are trained by Israel.

For example, the Lebanese in Ivory Coast are in big trouble.

It’s rumored that President Gbagbo, who hates to step down even if his country goes in flame, (as is the case of Gaddafi of Libya and Abdullah Saleh in Yemen), favors the Lebanese entrepreneurs.  Nothing wrong with that, unless…

There are strong rumors, supported by evidence, that Israel is rekindling the wrath against the Lebanese in Ivory Coast and Africa in general.  This is normal:  The Zionist apartheid State has this habit of transferring people and filling the void

Lebanese entrepreneurs in Lebanon proper produce to export.

The Lebanese citizens never enjoyed any quality products manufactured or produced in Lebanon:  They are all exported and the Lebanese merchants import third grade products, change the labels, and poison our citizens.

Good fresh fruits are immediately exported in waiting six and eight-wheelers to Arab countries such as Saudi Kingdom, Kuwait, and Jordan…The citizens have to contend with the spoiled and smaller categories of fruits…

Lebanon produced four times its need of olive oil:  They are all exported and the citizens have to consume the third grade leftover olive oil and import poisoned olive oil…

And you have this minister of industry encouraging the citizens to buy Lebanese manufactured products; where are those quality products?

Lebanon has a couple of pharmaceutical “factories”, producing aspirin…

For a couple of months, the citizens enjoyed low-cost aspirin-type of products.  And Aspirin vanished from local market:  The entire stocks were exported to Saudi Kingdom and the Lebanese had to contend with expensive imported aspirin that are no different than what we produced.

Syria manufactures 70% of its pharmaceutical needs and it is the Syrian government import only the expensive medicines that it does Not manufacture at bargain prices.

The Lebanese have no governments, we have been living in a pseudo-State since our Independence” in 1943.

The pseudo-citizens have to deal with the multitude of infamy and indignities on their own. We still have no public electricity, no potable water, no valid infrastructure, no public transportation, no one to listen to any demonstration and marches demands…

Who is the clever Lebanese Entrepreneur?  Clever my ass!

Lebanon is still standing because the immigrants are sending money to their families back home.  It turned out that 15% of our GDP is from transferred money, though 10% of these influx are re–invested overseas and nothing for any sustained money generation institutions within Lebanon.

The immigrants who made it, return just to build fancy palaces that stay empty, and then return to where they are making money.

Barely they overstay longer than two weeks:  The peacocks have more important things to do with their lives.

The Lebanese “Christian immigrants” never contemplate to return and stay in Lebanon:  They didn’t study and abused of their families’ money in order to return the favors in their old age parents.

The motto is “Let bygone be bygone” for every infamous events that occur among the tribal/feudal/sectarian Leaders.

From far away, they never miss an opportunity to cursing Lebanon and the Lebanese stupid mentality.

We have this youth movement demanding to change the political sectarian and feudal system.

What we need is a strong central government cracking down on these rascals of Lebanese entrepreneurs at home:  The scums of entrepreneurs are the backbone of our degraded political and social structure and the one encouraging discrimination and medieval mentalities.

You might say that it is the bourgeoisie that changed old systems:  Correct. Not in Lebanon or the Middle-East.

The new bourgois classes in the industrialized countries removed the feudal and sectarian classes from the control of the citizens and erected institutions with potential to raise the well-being of most of the citizens..

The so-called “bourgois classes” in Lebanon and the Middle-East live in total collaboration and in mesh with the feudal/sectarian classes and support them against the “common citizens” in Not constructing viable sustainable States for all the citizens.

The so-called “bourgois classes” in Lebanon and the Middle-East are the most racist and discriminatory classes at all levels, inside and outside the boundaries.

Are you insinuating that our entrepreneurs have anything to do with reforming Lebanon or caring one iota about Lebanon and its people?

Weird deformed entrepreneurs my ass with no national allegiance to the citizens well-being, dignity and aspirations.

Is it a Modern idea? Happiness. A term spread around like cheese cake

Note: Re-edit of “Happiness is a modern idea? What the ancient philosophers were talking about…? Sept. 21, 2012”

In 1794, the young and radical French revolutionary Saint-Just proclaimed at the Convention: “Happiness is a new idea in Europe“.

Saint-Just was a learned man and must have read the documents and discussions of the leaders of the American Revolution and the concept that happiness is a natural right for every citizen. Was this idea of happiness similar to the one understood in Europe?

After the French Revolution, there were ideas thrown around that all citizens were entitled to eat properly, enjoy health, free time for leisure, appropriate retirement conditions…

What substituted for Happiness in Europe before the French Revolution?

Before the revolution, the little people were invisible and were of no concern to the nobility in these absolute monarchies, except when famine hits and the power feels the heat…

The ancient philosophers and the succeeding thinkers viewed happiness as “a way of living”, guided by virtue and reason, in relative indifference to material possession and worldly successes.

It was out of the question that idiots can be considered to be happy

It was not conceivable to claim happiness if you believed that it could have an end: Happiness was a concept directly linked to a faith in eternity and immortality.

Happiness was irreducibly an elitist acquisition, reserved for those who had the mental and material means to become wise and leisurely contemplate nature and the living people…

What could be the meaning and value of Happiness in modern time?

The “utilitarian” vision of happiness (Jeremy Bentham) proclaimed that happiness is in essence the absence of pains and aches, and the satisfaction of individual preferences can come in any order…The goal of the activities of individuals is the greater happiness possible within the greater number of mankind “the common good”.

This “democratization” of happiness, at the reach of the little people, was denuded of its sacred meanings, detached of its religious connotations, not opposite to ephemeral and artificial pleasures…

Like what kinds of modern pleasures?

Smoking marijuana, taking cocaine, morphine, hallucinogenic products, Prozac…watching action movies, scary movies, science fiction movies…all kinds of musics, concerts, all kinds of variety of food, visiting remote regions, seeing new cultures and civilization…wearing variety of clothes…engaging in a variety of physical activities and sports…

The German philosopher Kant tried to demonstrate that happiness bears No Moral meaning.

For example, there are so many objective desires that people aspire to, such as wealth, glory, power…Can we agree that these “values” are at best controversial and not evident to the little people? So many exploiters and tyrants have been swimming in happiness

How happiness was characterized before the French revolution?

1. Epicure (341-270 BC) taught in his Garden to oppose the rigor of stoicism, and to converge toward a moral of moderation “Let’s not jump into any kinds of pleasure…There is no agreeable living without a hefty dose of prudence, honesty and justice…”

2. Seneca (4 BC-65) The individual should be capable of combining reason and character in order to find pleasure from his physical faculties “I am after happiness of man and not of his stomach…”

3. Leibniz (1646-1716): “Evil exists. Considering Creation as a whole, God did his best…The grain suffer in the soil before bearing fruits…Our suffering lead the way to the good, to the greater perfection…”

4. Spinoza (1632-1677): “The essence of mankind is the desire to be happy, to live good, and to act good…The only access to happiness is to know what determine our passions in the natural order of the universe…”

And what are the visions of happiness after 1789?

5. John Stuart Mill (1806-1873). All the pleasures are Not of equal values. It is better to be an unhappy Socrates rather than a happy imbecile. Individual happiness is not complete if the common good is forgotten and neglected…

6. Nietzsche (1844-1900): “Who cannot learn to take a break to forget the past, to enjoy the moment, will never appreciate happiness, and will never learn how render others happy…There is a level of insomnia, of rumination, and of historical meaning that ruin the living person and annihilate his happiness…”

7. Georges Bataille (1897-1962): “If happiness is a reaction to the call of desire, and if desire is a caprice incarnate…then happiness is the sole moral value…”

8. Michel Foucault (1926-1962): “Abstinence that leads to individual sovereignty is happiness without desire and without trouble…”

Many modern critiques and thinkers made it a business (publishing books of how to be happy…) to fall back into the archaic version of “learning to be happy…”

Kind of  “if we know how to enjoy life in the cheapest way possible…” happiness can be in the reach of everyone…(except those dying of famine and of common diseases…?)

All that talks of ancient and modern ideas of happiness have no sense if not described and explained within the proper context of the period and culture.

For example:

1. How an individual with a life expectancy of no more than 30 years can conceive of happiness?

2. How an individual living in the harshest conditions to survive may experience happiness?

3. How the European under absolute monarchies and with a life expectancy not surpassing 40 years could comprehend the idea of happiness?

4. How all those cow-boys of the Far West experienced the meaning of happiness?

5. Was happiness the same before, during and after the Chinese revolution?

6. Was happiness experienced in the same quality before, during and after the British dominion of India?

7. Has happiness the same meaning and value before and after the “Industrial Age“?

8. Has happiness the same meaning and value during this instant communication and traveling facilities?

9. Don’t you think as life expectancy reaches 80 years that happiness requires extensive planning and preparation as we hit retirement age?

What can you do with your life without talent after 60?

How can you be happy if your eyesight goes and your hearing capacity dwindle?

The next article intends to describe the feasibility of experiencing “happiness” within the proper context…

Note: Post inspired from a study by Ruwen Ogien in the French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur #2490

I wanted to change the World. Did I fool myself?

Fooled Myself (2002)

I fooled myself. I pitied myself.

I wanted to know all, diligently, for decades.

I wanted to change the World

In my dreams, night or day.

Aloof, confused, distracted and detached of your Worlds.

It was the right thing then.  Still right, now.

I now take one task at a time.

Now that time is worth everything,

Time is irrelevant to me.

I want to stay healthy and fit.

I could be happy.

How a “Transparent accounting” for tax purposes? Away from biased Elite Class “Net profit” laws?

Transparent accounting: Based on revenue,

This is one of my Daydream ideas.

Revenue is the one item in the balance sheet that no corporation is about to cheat on, Not even gang and drug criminal organizations cheat on it. Why?

You cannot have a balance sheet or working statement or any other accounting gimmick without accurate revenue…

Board of director members take their cuts directly from the total revenue.

They know how much the company is generating in gross profit, excluding side revenues and under the table bonuses and favors…

For example, they that the percentage on the revenue cut must correspond to 50% of the gross profit, and they get first cut, ahead of time, and all other items can be changed to correspond to the expected net profit.

Even without the huge amount of data, financial and economical data, companies in particular line of business have an appreciation of the gross profit before the legal year starts, based on the previous revenue and accurate forecasting…

Every item in the balance sheet is known as a percentage of the revenue.

You change a percentage and you know what the managers should be doing as consequences: Fire employees and how many, reduce facility costs, save on energy, training, quality of spare parts, inspection, quality control,…

Actually, all the accounting standards and accounting schools and degrees are Not meant to fine-tune the accounting records of anything. Mostly, these degrees are to know and apply the laws that benefit the Elite Classes in a society.

The government and the corporations have no need for all the accurate numbers and inspection of records and papers: They know the revenue and the proper percentage on the revenue that each item is measured accordingly.

Government can as easily and more accurately get the taxes on revenue, instead of waiting for the gross profit computation, and saving the citizens the exacerbation of enacting loopholes as large as the State of Montana.

If the financial and business communities consider the tax rate on revenue high or exaggerated, they can lobby to simply reduce the rate of the percentage on the revenue…What’s the big deal?

Is transparency anathema to governing?

Should government persist on creating more mysterious laws than the citizens are ready to swallow?

Is governing meant to constantly resume the financial emulation of cult organizations with code-names, secrecy, childish gimmick…?

Why the top 1% of corporations have to skim 20% of total revenue, then rearrange all the items in the balance sheet, so that the workers and employees sweat out negotiating on a better minimum wage?

Who is taking advantages of the small prints as footnotes in the balance sheet and other accounting gimmicks?

Why should the nation needs expert on how to comprehend the meaning of the footnotes, if transparency is the goal in transactions?

Occupy Wall Street protests should demand that accounting ratios should be transparent on a special accounting sheet:  Citizens must know how much the top 1% are actually paid, how much the middle management is paid, and how much the rank-and-file of workers are paid as a proportion of the total revenue…

Actually, who is generating the profit if Not the workers and employees, and who is making the economy grow, and who is defending the interests of the top 1%?

Occupy Wall Street protests task is to demand transparency in all financial undertaking, starting with a transparent accounting.
