More than 16,000 artists call for an end to complicity with Apartheid Israel. Palestinian Artists of UK report

Posted on: December 31, 2021

Hello <<First Name>>

We’re taking a minute to celebrate some of the achievements of artists and organizers who stood together for Palestine in 2021

As ever, we pay tribute to the resilience of the Palestinian people, who we continue to learn from and be inspired by.

And we’d like to celebrate all the cultural workers who continue to listen to and amplify the voice of the oppressed. Here are just a few of our collective achievements this year:
1. More than 16,000 artists call for an end to complicity with Israeli apartheid
May 2021 saw Musicians for Palestine, Visual Arts for Palestine, Letter Against Apartheid and many other solidarity initiatives spring up.

‘It is as if a dam has burst. The last few days have seen an unprecedented outpouring of solidarity with Palestinians from artists and cultural organisations around the world…’
2. Support for Sally Rooney’s Israel boycott

4.Brian Eno: ‘We should all be alarmed by this new McCarthyism’
The Guardian took up our proposal that Artists for Palestine UK signatory Brian Eno write about anti-Palestinian McCarthyism in Germany. This powerful piece identifies a danger to which UK arts institutions should be alert and that should alarm anyone who cares about freedom of conscience and expression.

The Guardian:
‘Artists like me are being censored in Germany – because we support Palestinian rights’
A 2019 parliamentary resolution has had a chilling effect on critics of Israeli policy. Now the cultural sector is speaking up.
2022: Will you defend the right to protest? In May, the UK government pledged in the Queen’s Speech to stop ‘public bodies’ supporting ‘boycott, divestment or sanctions campaigns’ against ‘foreign countries’.

Robert Jenrick MP recently told an Israel lobby group that in 2022 the government will legislate ‘to have an absolute ban on BDS’.

We do not yet know what form such a ban could take.
But we are certain that artists and cultural workers will have an important role to play in speaking out, organising and fighting attacks on our fundamental freedoms. We hope you’ll join the fight.

Let’s never stop talking about Palestine! With love and solidarity,
the Artists for Palestine UK organising collective
