Shatila (Chatila) Camp survivors recollect the massacre: Of Sharon’s Beirut genocide in 1982

Sharon death only partial solace for Shatila survivors

NOW speaks with Palestinian survivors of the infamous 1982 massacre

SHATILA, Lebanon: On Monday afternoon, the recently-deceased former Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, was being laid to final rest in the Negev desert, where he was eulogized by national and international dignitaries as a “great leader” whose “memory will forever be kept in the nation’s heart.”

But in the mud-caked, bare-brick labyrinth of narrow alleyways in Beirut’s Shatila refugee camp, some streets scarcely wide enough for one adult to pass, Sharon’s name was remembered by the Palestinian residents for something other than greatness.

A weapon of the massacre

“I was 12 years old at the time. I remember standing right here,” said one resident who gave his name only as Fadi, pointing to the rusted metal doorway of his apartment on one of the camp’s numberless streets. “It was nighttime, and there were lights flying high up in the air. And I was wondering, who’s making these lights? And why?”

It was September, 1982.

The answer to Fadi’s question is that the lights were flares, fired by Israeli troops who had occupied the city weeks earlier following a bloody ground and air assault campaign masterminded by then-Defense Minister Sharon.

The flares provided illumination for Lebanese militiamen, allied with Israel at the time, who entered the camp and committed perhaps the most infamous massacre of the 15-year civil war, in which over a thousand civilian men, women, and children were killed with the knowledge of the Israeli forces encircling the camp.

Many of the victims were raped and hacked with blades. An official Israeli inquiry later found Sharon “indirectly responsible” for the massacre and recommended that he be removed from his post. To his critics, he would forever be known as the “Butcher of Beirut” thenceforth.

On top of the wardrobe in his bedroom, 83-year-old Hajj Abu Ahmad al-Salhani still keeps a remarkable memento of the slaughter that nearly claimed his life. “This is one of the actual weapons they used on us,” he tells NOW, holding up an old workman’s tool with a hammer’s head on one end and an axe on the other.

Salhani becomes visibly agitated when recounting the events, fidgeting nervously with an intense stare in his grey eyes.

“I was in a taxi when it started,” he tells NOW. “When I got home, we started hearing people talk about a massacre happening. Later, I found out the taxi I was in was stopped at a checkpoint, and we never heard anything about the others in it again. The taxi driver’s name was Ahmad Hishme.”

“My sister lost her husband in that massacre. I was one of the lucky ones,” he adds, his eyes moistening.

67-year-old Hajj Abu Imad al-Masri had an equally near miss with the Lebanese militiamen.

“That night I saw women and children running, screaming about a massacre. Sharon’s forces were set and ready on the Kuwait embassy, along with the Saad Haddad militia [the ‘South Lebanon Army’]. They came in from al-Rihab Street with axes, and managed even to get to al-Gaza Hospital, where they slaughtered a lot of people.”

“We had small underground shelters, where we were able to hide families.” Even so, they weren’t always beyond the militiamen’s reach.

“I remember the story of a guy we called ‘the survivor,’” said Masri. “He was hiding along with 25 families in an underground shelter and insisted on going out to get cigarettes. They caught him [and] he ended up telling them about the shelter. They took all the men aside, took their wallets, and then made them all face a wall. They executed all of them, except ‘the survivor,’ who took 15 bullets but didn’t die.”

For all the pain still clearly evoked by the memory of the massacre, the Shatila residents with whom NOW spoke said Sharon’s death was of little consequence to their overall plight.

“Personally, I would rather he stayed in a coma,” said Ziad Himmo, general secretary of the camp’s Popular Committee. “Or was just tossed into a field, like what happens to our people.”

Asked if he would have wanted to see Sharon face trial for war crimes, Himmo told NOW this would be missing the point.

“It’s not just about Sharon. The whole Zionist state is the problem.”

“I have no feelings about the death of Sharon,” said Salhani. “What about Saad Haddad? And Antoine Lahad [Haddad’s successor]? A lot of people should be held accountable.”

The insinuation that justice was still yet to be served was summarized by Masri.

“Israel should be held accountable, and not only Sharon, which is why his death means nothing to me. But who will hold Israel accountable? The same countries trying to help it become stronger now?”

General Ouze Merham interviewed Sharon in 1956 and Ariel’s answers:
1. I massacred 750 Palestinians in Rafah in one swipe
2. I encouraged my soldiers to rape the Palestinian women
3. Palestinian women are slaves to the Jews
4. We dictate to others what we want
5. I swear that I am ready to kill any civilian Palestinian I meet

BEIRUT: Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who died Saturday aged 85, was widely reviled in Lebanon for his role in the invasion of the country in 1982 as well as the massacres at the Beirut-based Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila.

Sharon was commonly dubbed the “Butcher of Beirut” for his association with some of the worst atrocities during Lebanon’s 1975-1990 Civil War.

He was a part of the Israeli military since the country’s creation, as a member of the Jewish Haganah paramilitaries in the 1947-48 war that led to the “Nakba,” displacing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

He rose through the ranks with his belligerent military strategies, leading a brigade in the 1956 Suez War, and engineering the capture of the Sinai Peninsula 11 years later during the Six Day War.

However, it was in his political career that he will be most controversially remembered.

As Defense Minister he spearheaded the invasion of Lebanon in 1982, set up to root out Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Organization and form a peace accord with the Beirut government. The invasion morphed into a long occupation, and inadvertently helped to confirm Hezbollah’s status as the resistance party.

In 1982, Israel’s ally Bashir Gemayel was assassinated by Syrian Socialist Nationalist Party member Habib Chartouni. Gemayel’s Kataeb fighters looked to the Palestinians to avenge the death and launched an attack of the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut, which were under Israeli control.

Over 3,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, were brutally killed, and as many taken away, never to reappear.

It was a massacre that Sharon was personally implicated in. A U.N. investigation the next year concluded that Israel was responsible for the attacks, and the Israeli-run Kahan Commission the same year determined that Sharon was personally accountable.

The Kahan report’s findings said that Sharon bore responsibility “for ignoring the danger of bloodshed and revenge” and “not taking appropriate measures to prevent bloodshed.”

The conclusions led many to dub Sharon the “Butcher of Beirut” and forced him to resign from the defense post but he refused to leave Cabinet, remaining minister without portfolio.

His bellicose reputation continued into his tenure as prime minister.

In 2000, he walked brazenly into the Temple Mount complex which houses the Dome of the Rock and the Aqsa mosque, some of the holiest sites in Islam. The inflammatory move was widely attributed as sparking the Second Palestinian Intifada.

He was also associated with the widespread expansion of illegal outposts in the West Bank. As Housing Minister in the 1990s, he oversaw the biggest settlement drive in 20 years.

However, despite his uncompromising attitude, in 2004 he signed into law a plan to re-house all settlers in the Gaza Strip.

Sharon: ‘Occupation’ terrible for Israel, Palestinians

Kelly Wallace on CNN this May 27, 2003

JERUSALEM (CNN) — Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon appears to be urging Israelis to accept giving up land for peace and advocating an end to what he called “occupation.”

“You cannot like the word, but what is happening is an occupation — to hold 3.5 million Palestinians under occupation. I believe that is a terrible thing for Israel and for the Palestinians,” he said Monday.

Those were stunning words from the longtime hawk and backer of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza.

“It can’t continue endlessly,” Sharon said. “Do you want to stay forever in Jenin, in Nablus, in Ramallah, in Bethlehem? I don’t think that’s right.”

On Sunday, the Israeli Cabinet voted to accept — with reservations — the U.S.-supported “road map” to peace, clearing the way for a series of steps that would lead to the creation of a Palestinian state within three years.

The first phase of the road map involves the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Palestinian zones reoccupied during the current uprising and a freeze on settlement activity in the West Bank and Gaza.

Palestinian officials are required to crack down on militant groups that have carried out attacks against Israelis.

The Palestinian Authority accepted the plan last month after it was drafted by the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations, the so-called Mideast Quartet.

The Israeli Cabinet’s 12-7 vote, with four abstentions, marked the first time an Israeli government has formally accepted the principle of a Palestinian state.

But Sharon faces a skeptical public. In a newspaper poll Monday, 51 percent said implementing the road map would not lead to peace, while 43 percent said it would.

The stakes will be high for this week’s expected meeting between Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas.

Abbas will call for immediate implementation of the road map, including an end to Israeli military operations in Palestinian areas and a freeze on any settlement expansion, Palestinian advisers said.

Both steps are key to convincing radical Palestinian groups to stop attacks against Israel, the Palestinians said.

But Israeli sources said Sharon will reiterate his long-held position that the first step must be a clear and visible Palestinian crackdown on groups such as Hamas, which has claimed responsibility for four recent suicide bombings against Israelis.

Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic fundamentalist organization, has acknowledged attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers and has been labeled a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department.

Daniel Ayalon, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, said Israel wants to see a “complete dismantling of the infrastructure of terror” by Abbas’ government.

“We cannot have negotiation by day and killing us at night,” Ayalon said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

Sharon and Abbas failed to achieve any breakthroughs in their last meeting more than a week ago.

And a series of suicide bombings by Islamic militant groups befinning shortly before the meeting was seen as a “declaration of war” by Sharon’s government.

Now the two men face U.S. pressure to deliver, with a possible Mideast summit — with President Bush as host — perhaps hinging on what comes out of this week’s talks.

A three-way summit involving Sharon, Abbas and Bush could be called within 10 days.

A senior Bush administration official told CNN that the White House would not agree to a summit until it sees initial steps taken by both sides — a Palestinian crackdown on militants and the lifting of Israeli economic restrictions.

Nevertheless, a Bush administration advance team left Sunday morning for Egypt to begin preparations for the possible summit, an administration official told CNN. The team is also set to go to Jordan, which Bush might visit early next month.

30 years later: Uri Avnery on Israel 1982 war against Lebanon Background: THIRTY YEARS ago this week, the Israeli army crossed into Lebanon.

That was the most stupid war in Israel’s history.

It lasted for 18 years. About 1500 Israeli soldiers and over 40, 000 Lebanese and Palestinians were killed, and four folds suffered serious injuries and handicapped.

Uri Avnery published “The war of Lies” on June 9, 2012 (with slight editing):

The War of Lies
Almost all wars are based on lies. Lies are considered legitimate instruments of war. The 1982 war on Lebanon is a glorious example. From beginning to end it was a war of deceit and deception, falsehoods and fabrications.THE LIES started with the official name: “Operation Peace in Galilee”.

If one asks Israelis now, 99.99% of them will say with all sincerity: “We had no choice. They launched Katyusha at the Galilee from Lebanon every day. We had to stop them.”

TV anchormen and anchorwomen, as well as former cabinet ministers have been repeating this throughout this week. Quite sincerely. Even people who were already adults at the time.

The simple fact is that for 11 months before the war, not a single shot was fired across the Israeli-Lebanese border.

A cease-fire was in force and the Palestinians on the other side of the border (south Lebanon) kept the peace scrupulously.

To everybody’s surprise, Yasser Arafat succeeded in imposing strict military operations on all the radical Palestinian factions, too.

At the end of May, Defense Minister Ariel Sharon met with Secretary of State Alexander Haig in Washington DC. He asked for American agreement to invade Lebanon. Haig said that the US could not allow it, unless there were a clear and internationally recognized provocation.

And lo and behold, the provocation was provided at once. Abu Nidal, the anti-Arafat and anti-PLO master terrorist, sent his own cousin to assassinate the Israeli ambassador in London, who was grievously wounded.

In retaliation, Israel bombed Beirut and the Palestinians fired back, as expected.

The Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, allowed Sharon to invade Lebanese territory up to 40 km, “to put the Galilee settlements out of reach of the katyushas.”

When one of the intelligence chiefs told Begin at the cabinet meeting that Abu Nidal’s organization was not a member of the PLO, Begin famously answered: “They are all PLO”.

General Matti Peled, my political associate at the time, firmly believed that Abu Nidal had acted as an agent of Sharon. So do all the Palestinians I know.

The lie “they shot at us every day” has taken such a hold on the public mind that it is nowadays useless to dispute it. It is an illuminating example of how a myth can take possession of the public mind, including even of people who had seen with their own eyes that the opposite was true.

NINE MONTHS before the war, Sharon told me about his plan for a New Middle East.

I was writing a long biographic article about Sharon with his cooperation. He believed in my journalistic integrity, so he told me his plan “off the record” and allowed me to publish it – but without quoting him. So I did.

Sharon had a dangerous mental mixture: a primitive mind unsullied by any knowledge of (non-Jewish) history, and a fatal craving for “grand designs”.

Sharon despised all politicians – including Begin – as little people devoid of vision and imagination.

Sharon design for the region, as told me then (and which I published nine months before the war), was:

  1. To attack Lebanon and install a Christian dictator who would serve Israel,
  2. Drive the Syrians out of Lebanon,
  3. Drive the Palestinians out of Lebanon into Syria, from where they would then be pushed by the Syrians into Jordan.
  4. Get the Palestinians to carry out a revolution in Jordan, kick out King Hussein and turn Jordan into a Palestinian state,
  5. Set up a functional arrangement under which the Palestinian state (in Jordan) would share power in the West Bank with Israel.

Being a single-minded operator, Sharon convinced Begin to start the war, telling Begin that the sole aim was to push the PLO 40 km back. He managed to vote in Bashir Gemayel as the President/dictator of Lebanon.

After the assassination of Bashir, Sharon facilitated the genocide that the Christian Phalanges carry out the massacre in Sabra and Shatila in order to terrify the Palestinians into fleeing to Syria.

The results of the war were the opposite of Sharon expectations:

1. Bashir was killed by the Syrians and his brother, who was then elected by Israeli guns, was an ineffective weakling.

2. The Syrians strengthened their hold over Lebanon. The horrible massacre did not induce the Palestinians to flee.

3. Hussein remained on his throne. Jordan did not become Palestine.

4. Arafat and his armed men were evacuated to Tunis, where they won impressive political victories, were recognized as the “sole representative of the Palestinian people” and eventually returned to Palestine.

THE MILITARY plan went awry right from the beginning, no less than the political one. Since the war was celebrated in Israel as a glorious military victory, no military lessons were drawn from it – so that 2006 preemptive war on Lebanon was an even greater military disaster.

The simple fact is that in 1982, no unit of the army reached its goal at all, or certainly not on time. Valiant Palestinian resistance in Sidon (Saida) held the army up, and Beirut was still out of reach when a ceasefire was declared.

Sharon simply broke it, and only then did his troops succeed in encircling the Capital Beirut and entering its Eastern part.

Contrary to his promise to Begin (repeated to me at the time by a very senior coalition partner), Sharon attacked the Syrian army in order to reach and cut the Beirut-Damascus road.

The Israeli units on that front never reached the vital road, and instead suffered a resounding defeat at Sultan Yacoub in the Chouf.

The Chief of Staff was Rafael Eitan, called Raful. He was appointed by Sharon’s predecessor, Ezer Weizman. At the time, I asked Weizman why he had appointed such a complete fool.

Weizman typical answer was: “I have enough IQ for the two of us. He will execute my orders.” But Weizman resigned and Raful remained.

ONE OF the most significant and lasting results of this war concerns the Shiites.

From 1949 to 1970, the Lebanese border was the quietest of all our borders. People crossed by mistake and were returned home.

It was commonly said the “Lebanon will be the second Arab state to make peace with Israel”, not daring to be the first.

The mostly Shiite population on the other side of the border was the most downtrodden and powerless of Lebanon’s diverse ethnic-religious communities.

When King Hussein, with the help of Israel, drove the PLO forces out of Jordan in the “Black September” of 1970, the Palestinians established themselves in South Lebanon and became the rulers of the border region, which was soon known in Israel as “Fatahland”.

The Shiite population did not like their overbearing new Palestinian lords, who were Sunnis. When Sharon’s troops entered the area, they were actually received with rice and candies by the Shias (I saw it with my own eyes.)

The Shiites, not knowing Israel, believed that their liberators would drive the Palestinians out and go home.

It did not take them long to perceive their mistake. They then started a guerrilla war, for which the Israeli army was quite unprepared.

The Shiite mice quickly turned into Shiite lions. Faced with their guerrillas, the Israeli government decided to leave Beirut and much of South Lebanon, holding on to a “security zone”, which duly became a guerrilla battleground.

The moderate Shiites were replaced by a much more radical new Hizb-Allah (“Party of God”), which eventually became the main political and military force in all of Lebanon.

To stop them, Israel assassinated their leader, Abbas al-Musawi, who was promptly replaced by a vastly more talented assistant – Hassan Nasrallah.

At the same time, Sharon’s clones in Washington started a war that destroyed Iraq, the historic Arab bulwark against Iran.

A new axis of Shiite Iraq, Hezbollah and Alawite Syria became a dominant fact. (The Alawites, who rule Assad’s Syria, are a kind of Shiite. Their name derives from Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet, whose descendants were rejected by the Sunnis and accepted by the Shiites.)

If Sharon were to wake up from the coma which has been his lot for the last six years, he would be shocked by this result – the only practical one – of his Lebanon War.

ONE OF the victims of the war was Menachem Begin. Many legends have been woven around his memory, blowing it out of all proportion.

Begin had many excellent qualities. He was a man of principle, honesty and personal courage. He was also a great orator in the European tradition, able to sway the emotions of his audience.

But Begin was a very mediocre thinker, completely devoid of original thought. His mentor, Vladimir Ze’ev Jabotinsky, treated him with disdain. In his way, he was quite naive. He let himself be easily misled by Sharon. Being single-minded and devoted to defeating the Palestinians and extending the rule of the “Jewish” state to all of historical Palestine, he did not really care about Lebanon, Sinai or the Golan.

Begin’s behavior during the Lebanon War bordered on the ridiculous. He visited the troops and asked questions that became the butt of jokes among the soldiers. In retrospect, one wonders whether by that time he was already mentally affected. Soon after the Sabra and Shatila massacre, which shocked him to the core, he retreated into deep depression, which lasted until his death ten years later.

THE MORAL of the story, relevant today as ever: Any fool can start a war, only a very wise person can prevent one.

Back to start: Latest news from Egypt, Libya, and US revolt fronts

General Tantawee of Egypt and his high-level officers in the armed forces re-established the emergency laws in Egypt in order to “secure peace and stability in Egypt“.  Why he did that?

Angry Egyptians stormed Israel Embassy and Barack Obama called to ensure security of Israel Embassy… and Tantawee responded by killing and injuring hundreds of Egyptian demonstrators! Why Tantawee did that?

Because dictator Sadat and his successor dictator Mubarak signed a “peace treaty” with terrorist Menuhin Begin without consulting with his people.  Actually, the treaty was linked to Israel withdrawing from occupied Palestinian territories in the West bank and Gaza, a clause that Israel never thought of satisfying.

Menuhin Begin was the first leader to start terrorist activities in the region during British mandate in Palestine: He blew up the King David headquarter and then followed up his terrorist activities by committing genocides in Palestinian towns and villages in order to force Palestinians to vacate their homes and end up refugees…

The Norwegian committee for Peace Prize deemed Begin as good a representative for leading peace behaviors…along with dictator Sadat.

Is something fishy in awarding Peace Prizes to convinced terrorists who never apologized for their brutality, but have been very apologetic about their sound decisions that “terrorism is good for reaching a political end results?

What Menuhin Begin did to confirm his reversal to a peaceful leader after the award?

He and Ariel Sharon preempted a war on Lebanon in 1982 and entered the Capital Beirut, they committed the horrible genocide in the Palestinian camps of Sabra and Chatila, they killed 50,000 civilians in Lebanon, they used phosphorous and cluster bombs, and occupied Lebanon for 25 years…

Guess what. There is this supposed leader of the Libya revolt, Abdul Jalil, claiming that Islam is going to be the source of laws.  He is so funny that he resumed “But our Islam is going to be a moderate Islam!”

I am glad that these revolts are not over yet.

The modern Arab activists will not wait for the next spring to sweep away those archaic and “too matured” leaders who didn’t get it yet.

The people want liberty, transparency, democratic fair elections, referendum on critical problems and ancient biased treaties, return to civic normal way of life, job opportunities, freedom of opinions, respect of human rights, working toward improving and sustaining the human development indicators as defined by the UN…

Did President Barack Obama failed to read the autobiography of GW.Bush in “Decisive moments” on the Palestinian problem?

GW. Bush wrote “The more I thought of the troubles in the Middle East, the more I was convinced that the fundamental culprit is lack of liberty in the occupied Palestinian territories. Without a recognized State, the Palestinians could not find their place in the world community; as long as the Palestinians have no say in their future, the extremist elements were going to fill the void; without legitimate leaders, democratically elected, dedicated to fighting extremist movement, peace with Israel will be compromised… I was the first US President demanding a recognized Palestinian State by the UN…

Not only Obama wants to veto the establishment of a Palestinian State, but he has been consistent in vetoing every UN resolution condemning Israel terrorist activities in the occupied Palestinian territories and the “Freedom boat” massacre against Turkish peace activists.  Obama is black, but he has proven to be the worst “apartheid” leader in the world community.  Apartheid is not defined by color: Observe Israel.

Something fishy is going around, don’t you think?

George W. Bush explains: “How I spread liberty”

How the campaign of Bush Junior for spreading  liberty around the world unfolded?

This post is a short review of a chapter in the autobiographical book “Decisive moments: GW.Bush”

In the speech of his second investiture, GW.Bush said: “We have recognized our vulnerability after 9/11/2001. We got intimate with the source of this deep violence.  As long as there are resentment and tyranny around the world, proper to the ideologies that feed on hate and excuse the assassin, violence will be born, will multiply with destructive power…The only force to vanquish tyranny is human liberty.  Survival of liberty in our country depends more and more on liberty in other nations.. Peace cannot take hold unless the spirit of liberty is disseminated everywhere by strengthening democratic institutions…”

Liberty is not an exclusive  USA value, but a universal value. Liberty is not imposed but selected among other values. A tyrannical government resembles a soldier constantly pointing his arm on a prisoner: Invariable, the arm of the tyrant will feel exhausted and numb, and the prisoner escapes.

We had to implant liberty by supporting governments attempting to install democratic institutions such as in the Palestinian occupied territories, Lebanon, Georgia, and Ukraine.  We encouraged reform movements in Iran, Syria, North Korea and Venezuela. We will be steadfast in maintaining our strategic relations with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Russia, and China (all of them trying to install democratic processes?)

The “Bush Doctrine” would not distinguish between terrorist movements and country hosting these movements; we had to strike first before terrorist activities invade our country. The massive waves of liberty that submerged the world in the second half of the 20th century ignored the Middle-East region. The 2002 UN report on human development stated that one out of three “Arabs”  illiterate; joblessness is over 15%; less than 1% had access to Internet; mortality of mothers were higher than the least developed countries; economic return per individual was minimal…The Arab researchers who wrote this report attributed the causes to lack of knowledge, women insufficiently responsible, and total absence of liberty.

“I refused to admit a moral equivalence between Palestinian suicide attacks and the disproportional military responses of Israel to “protecting its innocent civilians”. After 9/11, my opinion got affirmed that States have the right to defend against further terrorist attacks… I had lost confidence in the promises of Yasser Arafat (Is anyone surprised in this excuse? While the written guarantees of the US to Arafat for the safety of the unarmed Palestinians in camps were never applied? For example, the genocide in the camps of Sabra and Chatila in 1982 by Israel.)

I gave Ariel Sharon my assent for constructing a separation wall (Wall of Shame) between the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel: I believed that this wall will prevent Palestinians to trespass into Israel. After I received vehement reproach from Arabic leaders, I warned Sharon: “You have to know when to stop your execessive military responses”, but Sharon refused to budge in surrounding the headquarter of Arafat in Ramallah.

The more I thought of the troubles in the Middle East, the more I was convinced that the fundamental culprit is lack of liberty in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In 2007, Olmert PM of Israel called me and said: “George, I am asking you to bomb Syria Nuclear site”  I had received the report a short while ago. I replied: “Thank you for bringing up the problem. Give me some time to compulse the pieces of intelligence that I got.” I convoqued the national security team. There was a problem bombing a sovereign State without prior warning, and there were no justifications for the consequences.

Mike Hayden, director of the CIA, confirmed that the analysis showed a nuclear site, but no locations of the installation for the transformation of plutonium, he could not affirm that Syria was launching a nuclear weapon. I opted to pressure Syria to admit inspection of the international agency AIEA and relayed my decision to Olmert. Olmert was greatly deceived and retorted: “This situation hits Israel where it is the most fragile. Iwill be frank and to the point: Your strategy worries me enormously.”

On September 6, 2007, Israel demolished the site.  Olmert failed to wait for my green light; he desired that the instigator of the operation be kept secret from the media for fear of Syria retaliations.  The irony was that Bashar al Assad kept this operation under total control from the media.

(To be continued)

Note: GW.Bush tried to spread his version of “liberty” in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, North Korea, China…He failed to mention what he did to spread liberty in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Yemen…After the “Arab Spring uprising”, do you believe that Bush Jr. would have given priority to spreading liberty within the States allied to the US foreign policies? We all know that the “axe of evil” in the constant US foreign policies in the Greater Middle East is composed of States refusing Israel expansionist policies in the region.  It is stupid for this conclusion to be so simple and one-dimensional, but the persistent evidence and practices point to that direction.

The Children of Arna”: Who is Juliano Mer-Khamis?

Arna Mer-Khamis (1930-95) was Jewish who married a Palestinian from the neighborhood of the Palestinian Camp of Jenine in the West Bank. The couple had three children, two boys and a girl who were brought up to live in freedom and among plenty of other children of different religious affiliations and nationalities.

Arna founded the “House of kids” in Jenine.  The children in the camp enjoyed a place to get together, laugh, run, play games, dream of a better future, and be creative.

In 2002, during the “Second Palestinian Intifada”, the still in coma Ariel Sharon PM, savagely and bloodthirsty invested the camp and the Israeli tanks moved over live children, women, and Palestinian civilians. The UN didn’t dare investigate this crime against humanity:  Over 500 were killed and thousands injured.

After this massacre in Jenine, the elder son of late Arna returned to Jenine searching for the children of Arna.  Most the adults of the House of the Kids were killed in the massacre and the few remaining surviving were more familiar with weapons and explosives, as part of the new reality.

Juliano also founded an institution for the Palestinians in the camp called the Theater of Liberty in 2006. Many Palestinians were trained and participated in Juliano’s movies. Juliano had directed several films, one of them is “The children of Arna”, in 2003.

This April 4, 2011 Juliano was assassinated.  Gee, I thought Israel always discovered the murderer of a Jew, but not this time around.  Most probably, an Israeli sniper did the job, getting rid of a most turbulent and dangerous non-violent Jewish/Palestinian activist.

Note:  The movie “The Children of Arna” is produced by Osmat Trabelsi and Pieter Van Huyster; 84 minutes.  Check http://www.momento-films.com

Fairer view on the Palestinian rights and cause: The Economist butts in

On May 17th, The Economist published the article “Here comes your non-violent resistance“. I will repost it with a few editing, and add a few comments.

“For many years, we’ve heard American commentators bemoan the violence of the Palestinian national movement.  They would say “If only Palestinians had learned the lessons of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, they’d have had their recognized State long ago”.

Or the American commentators would say: “Surely, no Israeli government would have violently suppressed a non-violent Palestinian national liberation movement, seeking only the universally recognised right of self-determination”.

Palestinian commentators and organizers, including Fadi Elsalameen and Moustafa Barghouthi, have spent the last couple of years pointing out that these complaints resolutely ignore the actual and growing Palestinian non-violent resistance movement.

The first intifada, which broke out in 1987, was initially as close to non-violent as could be reasonably expected. For the most part, it consisted of general strikes and protest marches. In addition, there was a fair amount of kids throwing rocks, and a few continuing threat of low-level terrorism, mainly from organisations based abroad. the Israelis conflated the autochthonous protest movement with “terrorism” and responded brutally.  The first intifada quickly lost its non-violent character.

It is not that different from what has happened over the past couple of months in Libya: It shows that it’s very hard to keep a non-violent movement going non-violent, as the government you’re demonstrating against, subjects you to gunfire for a sustained period of time.

In any case, if you’re among those who have made the argument that Israelis would give Palestinians a State if only the Palestinians would learn to employ Gandhi tactics of non-violent protest, it appears your moment of truth has arrived.  What happened on Nakba Day (the day Israel chased out the Palestinians from their villages and homes to seek refuge in the neighboring States) was Israel’s “nightmare scenario”:  Masses of Palestinians marching (from all the bordering States to Israel), unarmed, towards the borders of the Jewish State, demanding the redress of their decades-old national grievance.”

Peter Beinart writes that this represents “Israel’s Palestinian Arab Spring”: the tactics of mass non-violent protests that brought down the governments of Tunisia and Egypt.  The same mass uprising that are threatening to bring down the regimes in Libya, Yemen and Syria, are now being used in the Palestinian cause.

We have an opportunity to see how Americans will react. “We’ve asked the Palestinians to lay down their arms. We’ve told them their lack of a State is their own fault; if only they would embrace non-violence, a reasonable and unprejudiced world would see the merit of their claims”. Over the weekend, tens of thousands of them did just that, and it seems likely to continue.

If crowds of tens of thousands of non-violent Palestinian protestors continue to march, and if Israel continues to shoot at them, what will we do? Will we make good on our rhetoric, and press Israel to give the Palestinians their State? Or will it turn out that our paeans to non-violence were just cynical tactics in an amoral international power contest, staged by militaristic Israeli and American right-wing groups whose elective affinities lead them to shape a common narrative of the alien Arab/Muslim threat? Will we even bother to acknowledge that the Palestinians are protesting non-violently? Or will we soldier on with the same empty decades-old rhetoric, now drained of any truth or meaning, because it protects established relationships of power?

What will it take to make Americans recognise that the real Martin Luther King-style non-violent Palestinian protestors have arrived, and that Israeli soldiers are shooting them with real bullets?”

A few comments:  The first non-violent Intifada pressured Itzhak Rabin to signing an agreement with Arafat, who was residing in Tunisia at the time.  The second Intifada was crushed in blood by Ariel Sharon in 2002.  Actually, Sharon entered the camp of Jenine and the Israeli tanks run over live Palestinian civilians and children.  Sharon finished the job by poisoning Yasser Arafat and imposing a total curfew on Ramallah that lasted 6 months.

On May 15, 2011, Israeli snipers shot to kill in the head and chest Palestinian marchers on the borders.  Over 20 civilian Palestinians were killed, point-blank with real bullets and over 300 were seriously injured on the borders with Lebanon, Syria (the Golan Heights), West Bank, and Gaza.

Palestine was partitioned into a Jewish and a Palestinian/Arab States in 1947.  Is not partitioning a recognition of a State?  Why the Palestinians had to wait till 2011 for the UN to vote in September for a Palestinian State?  Israel occupied more Palestinian lands in 1948, before the UN recognized the State of Israel.  Should people use brute force to occupy lands and demand the UN to recognize new lands captured by force?  What Israel and the UN call the 1967 borders, lands occupied after the 1967 war, are actually forgetting that Israel had occupied lands in surplus of what Palestine had been partitioned initially.

The US, the UN, Israel may wish that the borders of 1967 will satisfy the Palestinians.  Tough luck:  The UN declaration #194 demands the right of Palestinians to return to their lands, all the lands, before 1947.  The Palestinians have the right to return to their original homes, towns, villages, and get remunerated for lost gains and suffering.

Who are the planners of 9/11/2001 attack? (May 13, 2010)

Yes, Ussama Ben Laden claimed that he executed the attack on the Twin Tower.  It is known that the spokesman of al Qaeda Azzam was in fact the Zionist American Jew from California named Adam Pierman.  The close relative of Al Jarrah was a Mossad agent for 25 years: the Lebanese counter-intelligence services arrested Ali Al Jarrah last year. Italian President Francisco Cossiga declared to the Italian daily Courriere de la Sierra that all intelligence services around the world know that Israel is behind the planning of the terrorist attack on the towers.

Who planned and facilitated this complex terrorist activity? I don’t know; I am just reporting another perspective, strong with facts, to a tragic event.  I am not an investigative reporter and never worked in any branch of intelligence services.  Since I assume that most of my readers did not work in intelligence services or had any access to top classified files then, it is best for us all not to take commonly disseminated news for granted as truth, even if transcribed in dailies or books.

In December 2009, Press Pakalert (Pak Alert) published a paper that offered many facts pointing to Israel involvement in planning and facilitating  the Twin Tower terrorist attack. This paper mentioned that former Mossad chief from 1952 to 1963, Esser Harrel, told Michael Evans as early as 1979 detailed plans to how the Twin Towers will be destroyed. Esser said that Twin Towers represented the phallic symbols of the USA and thus will be targeted to humiliate the male ruthless image of the USA. Evan was having dinner with Harrel and Roven Hecht, first secretary to Israel’s Menahim Began PM.

Investigations pointed to four Zionist terrorist organizations involved in the planning and the facilitation of the attack.  The first group was headed by Larry Silverstein, an American businessman Jew from New York. Silverstein secured a rent contract to the World Trade Center for 99 years in July 2001, aided by the staunch Zionist Jew Ronald Lauder who was chief secretary to New York governor George Pataki.

The Towers were infested with asbestos and cleaning up would have cost more than the rent.  Larry and his two sons failed to show up to work at the Northern Tower on 9/11.  Silverstein cashed $4.5 billion from the insurance company.  Larry is a close friend to Ariel Sharon; and Benjamin Netanyahu PM used to call Silverstein every morning.

The second terrorist Zionist group is headed by Frank Loy Loy, owner of Westfield American.  Frank was an officer in the Israeli Golani Brigade and spends three months a year in his Israeli residence.  He rented the Mall in the Northern Tower.  Frank didn’t show up to work on 9/11.  Frank was lately indicted of embezzlement with former Israel’s Olmert PM.

The third group is headed by Louis Eisenbeg; he is a jewish gangster who directed the port authority of New York and let in the explosives and necessary materials; he funded the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign.

The fourth group is headed by Ronald Lauder, owner of Este Lauder. He played an important role in the privatization of the Twin Towers during governor George Pataki.  Lauder established in Israel’s town of Hertzilia a Mossad school named Lauder school for diplomatic and strategic governance.

Who was in charge of security in the trade center? Kroll Company was. This company is owned by the two Zionists Jule and Jeremy Kroll.  The executive manager is the Zionist Gerome Hower, a specialist in biological terrorism.  Guess who was in charge of airport security? Now, It was ACTS World company that was in charge of security in the 3 airports from which the airplanes took off.

ACTS is owned by the two Zionists Ezra Harrel and Menahim Atzmon.  Atzmon was the treasurer of the Likoud party and lately was put on trial in Israel for political blackmail and embezzlement.

The Israeli Odego company was handling fast communication messages that received the warnings to targeted persons to vacate the building.  Thus, two hours prior to the first airplane crashing in the first tower, 400 Israelis working there were warned to vacate.  For example, the merchant marine Israeli company Zim was warned a week ahead of the attack to vacate its offices in the Northern Tower.

Could the former and current Israel Benjamin Netanyahu PM be the mastermind of this terrorist attack?

Before 9/11, over 140 Israelis were under investigations for spying in the USA.  A week before the attack, the leader of the attack, Mohammad al Atta and his companions, paid a visit to the Zionist Jake Abramovitch to his yacht in Florida.  Jake is a former administrator under Bush Sr.

What happened after the attack? The CIA knew that Israel was behind this attack, but the US Administration preferred to focus on a precise target, since Ben Laden claimed the attack.

All appointed judges and investigators were zionists in order to camouflage the investigation and keep it under tight control; for example, Alvin Hillerstein, Michael Mokassy, Michael Chirtoff, Kenneth Fineburg, Sheila Birnbaum, Stephen Kauffman.

During President Clinton, the US planned a war on Iraq six month before GW.Bush was elected.  Israel was pressuring Bush Junior to invade Iraq at no avail.  After the attack, the zionists Mark Grossman, Ary Flisher, Paul Wolfowitz, Doulas Feith, Richard Perl, and Eliot Abrahms were asked to wrap up the planned invasion.

Families of over one million dead and handicapped Iraqis are demanding to know “Why my family was wasted”?

Note 1: Richard Clark, chief of counter-terrorism, during Clinton and Bush Jr., declared this evening (2012) on an anniversary documentary of Sept.11 on channel ARTE:

“More than 50 people in the CIA were accumulating pieces of intelligence on Al Qaeda since Ussama Bin Laden declared war on the USA in 1997 from Peshawar. The CIA was receiving intelligence from the European States and following closely the activities of Al Qaeda in the bombing of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania (1998) and the attack on the warship Cole in Aden and the attacks in the Philippines with sophisticated non-detectable liquid bombs…

The CIA claimed that it was working for the long-term and refused to share its information with the FBI on Al Qaeda elements who entered the USA “legally”, 13 months before Sept.11. The CIA didn’t want that the FBI to crack down on the Al Qaeda elements on the US soil, in order not to disturb its “intelligent work” and procedures…

The US army had its special intelligence center and managed to connect all the links among the Qaeda members and leaders and tried to warn the CIA of the urgency to share these information with the FBI, but the CIA made all kinds of excuses and went on tangent problems that were of no consequence in the short-term. Like the ballistic missile reduction…

The CIA had all the pieces of intelligence it  needed, and most agencies knew that something big is being planned and prepared on the US soil…”

The CIA was simply waiting for the disaster to happen…Why?

Richard Clark said that he readied drones with missile launching capability in order to annihilate the Al Qaeda main training camps and headquarters in Peshawar. The government refused any further bombing on account that the US was already involved in the bombing of Yugoslavia and keeping the “no-fly zone” over Iraq and didn’t want to project the image that the US is on the “go-ho” of destroying everything and everywhere around the world…”

Why the CIA refrained from sharing information with the FBI and other intelligence gathering agencies? Most probably to execute a ready-planned preemptive war (on Iraq) betting on the “Cow Boy” reaction of the US government to go immediately into action, in retaliation for the suffered indignity…

The CIA was in tandem with Israeli strategic ready-made plan, and Israel agents were the ones behind the facilitation and acquisition of the means for the Qaeda to put into execution the project of annihilating the Twin Towers…

Note 2:  Israel is warning the USA of coming terrorist activities because it realized that Iran is off the hook.  Israel is warning the Near East States of another pre-emptive war on account of Scud missiles that Hezbollah has supposedly received.  Most probably, Israel is sending the message that the scenario for its next war will start by smuggling Scud missiles to its agents in Lebanon to fire on selected targets in Israel with a few casualties to enhance credibility.

I am seeing double; (September 26, 2009)

I woke up at 7:30 am seeing double. I got in bed seeing double but it didn’t affect my sleep or my hope in a better world.

Waking up seeing double had the world around me tumbling down. The legs of tables have doubled; things must be logically more stable but my perception is not reassured. I have never seen such a mess around the house: too many sandals, thongs, and socks.

I am not drunk and there is nothing wrong with my corrective eye glasses:  Without glasses I see four of each object.  I have a mind of super-imposing my spare glasses: maybe I would see a single world.  Sure the world would look terribly fuzzy but still singular.  I didn’t try to demonstrate my hypothesis: most probably I won’t though I am hugely tempted if I didn’t abhor fuzziness even more.

I am trying to be functional one eye at a time; the world is lacking depth and not interesting.  I feel uneasy with nature lacking depth; I am not sure if I am pouring properly in a cup or replacing any lid with precision perceptually. I am not that worried about man lacking depth: I got used to it. I pity animals with more than two eyes: with too much depth every step must be like stepping over precipices.

I look at the nearby village with both eyes and it is a duplicate; I shut one eye and then the other and the village shifts location.  If most conquerors saw double they would not feel the urge to conquer some more lands; so far, Lebanon must have doubled in superficies and can boast to be an expansionist nation.

I will refrain from driving today: I might take the wrong route till I crash or I might attempt to slide between two cars of same type and same color.  People before me had accidents of the same kind but they happened at night; like not avoiding a car with only one head light on thinking they were facing a motorcycle.  Besides, I don’t feel hot people asking me why I keep switching eyes. It is so tiring closing one eye, especially typing on my keyboard.  I feel that I can focus better with my left eye on. Eventually, I might get used to shut my eyelids effortlessly and keep them shut effortlessly.

So far, I have been observing my symptoms for over 24 hours until I manage to see an eye physician on Monday. I think that I am walking balanced: I didn’t bump into anything yet but I experienced several instances of close call for slipping because of lack of depth. The duplicates are mirror images from the direction of my piss. Physically, I am normal but I am starting to burp a lot and I have not eaten anything. I suspect that I have been poisoned. I would love to blame Ariel Sharon but he has been in deep coma for ages; he has been a lot of body with no brain to start with; he might be experiencing a loop of recurring dreams; any dream in the loop that is not gory must be a bonus to Ariel; or maybe not.

Last evening I told my brother dentist of my symptom; he said “see an eye physician”.  Then 10 minutes later my brother enters with an astonished horror look and proclaimed to the assembly of mother and dad that he remembered a friend of his who experienced the same symptoms and it turned out that he had suffered a slight stroke; I told him that I don’t feel any physical pain or other handicaps; he said people don’t feel much from slight strokes.  My brother went on to admonish me to go to the hospital right away or see our family doctor.  We have no family doctor; and then what? Take the money and then tell me to go see an eye physician?  That’s my brother; no tact.  I have told my mother during the day but she didn’t take me seriously.  Now mother is beside herself and offering all kinds of opinions and suggestions; she will fail to sleep tonight and will covet me for God knows how long.             This is a fucking life: too many illusions piled up to make pain real.  That is absolute creativity. If I live enough to see the proper physician then I might tell the rest of my story; the causes of my symptoms and my cures if any.  I woke up this Sunday seeing double.

For when is Barak Obama to settle on a clear perspective? (September 23, 2009)

So far the Obama Administration is sending the strong signal that it is drifting with no mooring programs or plans for the mid-term perspective. The Democratic Party has won the election but it has been continuing and executing the neo-conservative Republican Party programs and plans decided upon before the election.

The main promise of health care reform is at a standoff and blocked. The only default decision was to scrap the installation of ballistic missiles along the borders with Russia for lack of funding. A few restrictive laws on banking were added with a clause not to be enforced for at least two years for lack of manpower and adequate budget. Everything else is going as if nothing happened since the financial crash; as if no new election was done. The decision to close Guantanamo prison was taken in the previous administration; so was the exit plan for the retreat of the troops from Iraq.

The short-term deal with China is that everything is to resume as before for three years until both nations clean houses. Military activities have been resuming in Afghanistan and Pakistan with increased numbers of troops for a lost cause on the field. George Mitchell has been dispatched to the Near East to arrange the creation of a Palestinian State; so far, it seems that Mitchell peregrinations are meant to last two years because the Obama Administration is still trying to untangle the purposes of the Greater Middle East Plan that did not exist in the first place: there was no plan; period. Iraq is as bad as in the worst years and its President Maliki wants also to anger Syria and stop normal diplomatic arrangements.

After 9/11, 2001, the “prestige” of the USA was attacked. The Bush Junior Administration of neo-conservative was not prepared for this kind of cataclysm; it was taking a long vacation from urgent world environmental degradation decisions. The American people demanded swift responses commensurate to the US baffled image of the only remaining superpower. The government had no ready alternatives but to dig up war plans in their last phases of simulations; it selected the war plans targeting the Middle East simply because Bush hastily blamed Islam for the attack. The public was ready to accept any enemy target; if Islam is the terrorist culprit then lets annihilate Al Qaeda promptly and not worry about collateral casualties.

Invading poor and tribal Afghanistan had nothing of a Hollywood action movie; the public wanted a war with a tad bit of complexity and difficulty that correspond to the “power” of the USA. Invading Iraq was perfect in feasibility, natural resources, and a hated dictator that can arrange the desires of the American public. Pre-emptive war it was; the hell with the United Nations resolutions. Did we hear that most of Europe is against this transgression?  Then Europe is an old fart.

As so many institutions and private intellectuals analyzed the goal of this pre-emptive war so did I.  To my amazement I figured out that there was no plan at all. The Bush Administration went to war and then waited for the analyses to converge. From the many titles they adored “The Greater Middle East Plan”. They just relied on this catchy title and filed the void with general abstract notions of democracy, liberty, free trade, and war against the satanic terrorists.  Ariel Sharon wanted his own wars against terrorism then no problems; Sharon and his successors got all the green lights they wanted and promptly; they built the Wall of Shame; they destroyed entire Palestinian refugee camps; they erased Gaza from the map; they jailed 12,000 civilian Palestinians with no legal cases or due procedures, and they invaded Lebanon in July 2006.  Israel asked for a cease fire after the third day but Bush wanted this war to resume for another 30 days. Lady Condo landed in Lebanon and farted “The Greater Middle East is now in a pregnancy period; the Lebanese have to suffer for the greater world benefit”.

After many years of wars and conflicts in the Middle East the White House thought that he got down a coherent plan of why this war was pre-empted.  Everything was micromanaged for “coherence” sake and not for rational purposes. Many lucky activities that had god potentials were sacrificed for “coherence” image of a plan that never existed in the first place.

The devastating hurricane lasted 7 years with a new term extended to the president who initiated it and had no idea why he did it and what to do next. The American public woke up at a strange scene of chaos and disintegration. The military lost moral and was committing suicide at an accelerate rate, the economy was not productive, the financial crash demolished the remnant ideology of liberal capitalism, employment rates were skyrocketing, and wars were still going on strong in many fields of operations. The Republican Party had nothing to offer in its campaign but empty patriotic slogans that made every citizen puke.

There was a white ghost in the White House; it was replaced by a colored one. While canvassing the world with rhetoric that pleases everyone Obama is still in the stage of comprehending the problems he inherited. Meanwhile, the world community is groveling in the delusion that the US can participate in the resolution of world problems. The best for Europe, China, and Russia is to start leading the world and let the US rest and keep away from world problems or any kinds of interventions.  The US of both parties can no longer suffer to handle even its own mess. The enlightenment has fled the USA and its decision process needs to navigate the endless labyrinth of bureaucratic caves and tunnels.

We have got no time to put our good eggs for hatching with a foolish headless hen.
