“Justice rendered” and “Grapes of wrath”: Books or military operations?

In July 1993, during Yitzhak Rabin PM, and April 1996 (Shimon Perez PM), Israel launched two devastating military operations into Lebanon, destroying all Lebanon infrastructure, hydraulic and electrical systems, roads, bridges…

Over 500,000 Lebanese civilians in south Lebanon had to flee their villages and towns, and hundreds were killed…

In 1993, Timor Goksel (UN  contingent spokesman) clarified the reason for the vast Israeli military operation called “Justice rendered”:  “Hezbollah (resistance movement against Israel occupation of south Lebanon) has managed to kill too many (relative to previous periods) Israeli soldiers in short lapse of time…Hezbollah was leading a resistance  very much within the rules of the game: Israeli soldiers for resistance fighters killed in engagements…”

In the decade 1983-93, for every Israeli civilian killed by obsolete Katiousha rockets, 30 Lebanese civilians were harvested by Israel shelling of towns and villages. Now, since Israel soldiers were being targeted, deadly and punitive military operations were the response.

Israel main objective was to pressure the State of Lebanon (its army) to restrain Hezbollah zeal for resisting occupation.  Israel know that Lebanon never enjoyed any valid central power to confront any faction, much less a resistance more heavily armed and supported by Iran in organization and funding.

The Israeli military propaganda was that Israel was equipped with the latest technologies to automatically locate incoming rockets and respond within seconds and destroy rockets before impact…Reality proved to be very different: Israel just applied random violence on Lebanese civilians… The question in the high command was: “How Israel army was to pulverize 54 Lebanese towns and villages bordering Israel and force the civilians to transfer northward?”

In 1993, and for 7 days and nights, Israel bombed and ruined 70 villages and destroyed Lebanon infrastructure.  Over 140 Lebanese civilians were killed, over  350,000 fled, and only 9 resistance fighters fell martyrs in retaliation for two dead Israeli civilians.

This time around, Israel was retaliating against Lebanese and Not against any “Palestinian terrorists“.  The internal political climate in Lebanon rallied around Hezbollah’s right to resist the occupiers.

The US of Clinton had to hurry to Damascus to strike a cease fire agreement with Hafez al Assad.  Hezbollah won politically: The US agreed to recognize Hezbolla’s rights to resist occupation: fighting is among fighters!  Three weeks later, Hezbollah killed 9 Israeli soldiers in a single day:  The July 1993 operation was supposedly in retaliation for 7 Israeli soldiers killed between 1985 and 1993.

In October 1994, Hezbollah climbed a mountain and planted its flag on an Israeli bunkers manned by 70 soldiers of the “elite” Givati: The Israeli soldiers dispersed haphazardly in the adjacent forests.

And this exploit was filmed by “embedded” Hezbollah cameramen who showed the document the same night on Hezbollah’s TV station “Al Manar“.  An instant hit story around the Arab world. This valiant operation by Hezbollah came in retaliation of the Israeli bunker in Dabcheh shelling the large town of Nabatieh and killing an entire two families.

The “Grapes of wrath”Israeli vast operation in April 1996 had for purpose to pressuring Syria to “restraining” Hezbollah and consequently to alienating Syria from Iran.

The operation lasted 17 days and nights: 500,000 Lebanese civilians fled, 165 were killed, 13 resistance fighters fell, and again all Lebanon infrastructure destroyed, to be rebuild for the nth time.

In this operation, the UN contingent in the town of Qana warned Israel of the existence of Lebanese civilians in their compound: Israel thus shelled the compound with 13 mortar shells of the 155 mm caliber and killed 102 civilians!  Lebanese totally backed Hezbollah and even “right wing and isolationist” Christians donated money and acclaimed Hezbollah.

The US of Clinton had to hustle back to Damascus for another cease-fire deal.  The French headed the negotiation and US Christopher had to bow down to the new agreement: Israel has no longer any “rights” to targeting Lebanese civilians.

Since 1996  operation, Hezbollah escalated its operations from 200 on average to 1,000 in 1998.  By 1999, the number of Hezbollah’s operations climbed to 1,500.  In 2000, Israel was forced to withdraw without negotiation or any preconditions.

In June 2006, Israel tried one more time with an operation that lasted 33 days with full backing of Bush Junior.

Israel lost the war and the political clout and is reduced to count Hezbollah as a true army and at par as a determined and efficient deterrence force to consider in any later operations.

How Israel abused of the Christians during the occupation of one-third of Lebanon (1982-2000)

Part of this post was inspired by the book “A history of Lebanon, 1860-2009” by David Hirst. Hirst is a British veteran journalist who was the correspondent of the British The Guardian for 43 years in the Middle-East: He was kidnapped twice in Lebanon.

In her book “The Amants (lovers) of Zion”, Laura Zittrain Eisenberg, the historian of the Zionist/Maronite relationship, wrote: “A few years before the Balfour Declaration (1917), Russian Zionists contacted the Maronite clergy (Christian sect of Lebanon) and the Zionists leaders were happily surprised to be welcomed warmly. Not only the Maronite clergy wanted the Jews to immigrate to Palestine and Syria (Lebanon was part of Syria), but wished that immigration wave be vast and quick. The Maronites viewed themselves as the Christians of the Orient who are the most westernized in the region and compatible with western civilization.

Consequently, the Maronite clergy, big merchants, and feudal leaders wished to have many more minority religious sects to grow in number in order to counterbalance the vast Moslem population.  They believed that the intellectual and cultural superiority of the Maronite and Jews would compensate for their numerical inferiority. They hoped for fresh investment in industrial equipment, production methods, and western skills to enhance prosperity in the Near-East, where they were the leading business professionals…”

In the early 1920’s, the Maronite people were divided between the isolationist and pro-Zionist groups, and those factions with Pan-Arabic feelings and conviction. The first group selected “Phoenicia” history and civilization as the foundation for a State of Lebanon.

The Zionist movement welcomed any support coming from any corner in the Arab World, on the ground that “Necessity is the driving law”

Journalist British correspondent Robert Fisk wrote a book “Affliction of Nation” and I have been summarizing chapters of the Arabic version.  Fisk covered the civil war in Lebanon for 9 years for the British daily The Times and investigated on the ground.

Fisk wrote “In the winter season of 1981, the Lebanese Forces installed mortar guns on Mount Sannine. (Robert Fisk was among the “Christian” forces, called “The Lebanese Forces” headed by Bashir Gemayel).  I could barely breath from the high altitude and the freezing weather.  The Syrian army got suspicious of Beshir’s purpose, particularly that Bashir boasted publicly of his friendship with Israel.

“Actually, Israel has been unloading military equipment and ammunition in the port of Jounieh for quite a time. What if this side road is being prepared for Israel to use in a preemptive war against Syria?

Syrian tanks fired over these mortar installations.  The militia behaved as frightened adolescent every time a tank fired over them.  The Syrian troops managed to stop finishing constructing this military road.  The Christian militia prevented the Syrians from reaching Faraya snow skiing resort.  The Syrian troops acquired the top of Sannine, while the Christian militia were contented of remaining 50 meters below. Fisk looked over the sand bags and could see the entire Bekaa Valley down below.

This was a totally bungled battle, meant principally for propaganda purpose.  The university graduates in the Christian militia were hardly capable of firing properly the mortar guns.  Fisk wrote: “As we were withdrawing in a hurry, using a German truck (the same kinds imported by the Palestinians in West Beirut), a tire blew up.  We had to scramble on slippery snowy ways for 9 miles toward the hotel Mazar Faraya.  This hotel was transformed into a military garrison.  All the utensils were imported from Israel, as well as the military clothes”. The militias were into the new trend of shalom here, shalom there.” (See note #1)

“As the invasion of Israel to Lebanon in June 1982 progressed, fear and apprehension of Israel military vanished. The might of Israel was not in its soldiers, but in its destructive fire power and air superiority, all of it given for free by the US.

In this invasion, Israel emptied its last shot at scaring its neighboring States:  Israeli soldiers were hunkering down in their bunkers.  An Israeli war analysts wrote: “Illusion was the basis of this preemptive war and its motivation was concealed. This war was doomed to end in catastrophe”

Israel was pressured to withdraw from the Capital Beirut in late 1982, as resistance started and officers were assassinated in broad daylight and in public, but it managed to impose its stooges Bashir Gemayel as President to Lebanon.  Bashir was assassinated two weeks before he takes office. Israel reacted by inviting the “Lebanese Force” militia to enter the Palestinian camps of Sabra and Chatila.

A terrible genocide was carried out for two days and three nights under the watchful eyes of the Israeli army cordoning-off the camps. Actually, Israel lighted the sky, dug mass graves, sent supplies to the criminals, and also brought by helicopters scores of Lebanese/Israeli soldiers from south Lebanon to lead and initiate the slaughter-hood.

Israel occupation forces withdrew to the Chouf district, mostly Druze, and by 1983, Israel suffered over 140 casualties and over 400 injured soldiers in resistance attacks. Israel decided to withdraw further south to the north of the Litany River.  Before it withdrew, Israel invited the Lebanese Forces militia, commanded by Samir Geaja, to occupy the Chouf district on its behalf. The Lebanese Forces militia committed indignities and humiliated the Druze population.  As Israel vacated the premises, the Druze counter reacted and forced the Christian to flee and transfer to the Christian canton. Until now, the Christians failed to return to their home towns and homes.

In 1985, as Israel prepared to relocate and withdraw to newer defensive lines, Israel called upon Samir Geaja, leader of the “Christian Lebanese Forces”, to come to Saida.  Geaja set up his guns in the Christian village of Mieh wa Mieh (overlooking the city of Saida) and shelled the city for an entire day.  The next morning Geaja returned to Beirut (Achrafieh).  A week later, Israel withdrew its troops, and the Christians were forced to vacate their towns and village, never to return.  That was mainly the job of Samir Geaja.

In 2000, Israel was forced to withdraw from Lebanon, without negotiation, preconditions, and unilaterally. The Christian in south Lebanon who supported Israel occupation had to flee to Israel, in order not to succumb to violent reactions.  Thousands of Lebanese are still living precariously in Israel and are waiting for viable Laws to return.

With the exception of the Damour case in 1976, most of Christian transfer calamities were the planning and tactics of Israel occupation forces, executed by small-minded and sectarian Christian leaders.

British and Zionist terror tactics in Palestine in the 1930’s

In the 1920’s, under British mandated power, the Palestinians delivered countless petition to the British administration to conduct democratic elections for municipal and the Parliament, as did the French mandated power in Syria and Lebanon. The Zionist Jews, in Palestine and their lobbies in England and the USA, blocked any election process, on the ground that since they are in the minority (one Jew to 10 Palestinians), the election would be at their disadvantage.

As England refused to institute democratic laws and representation in Palestine, the Palestinians realized that the mandated power is intent on establishing a Zionist State in part of Palestine.

In Nov. 1935, sheikh Al Qassam and four of his followers moved to the forest of Jenine and started training and preparing for civil resistance.  The British assassinated all of them.

And the “Great Revolt“, as labeled by the British, lasted 3 years.  The British engaged 100,000 troops to quell the civil insurrection by all means of cruelty and brutality.

A British physician on the field, Tom Segev, wrote in his diary: “The brute tactics used by the British forces and the methods of humiliation could be efficiently adopted by Nazi Hitler.  Nazi Germany could learn and assimilate the British terror tactics on smooth running of concentration camps...”

The British initiated and trained Jewish colons to participate in the taming of the Palestinian civil disobedience.

David Niv, the official historian of the terrorist Zionist organization, the Irgun, wrote in “The campaign of the National Military Organization 1931-37”:

The violent attacks of the Irgun are not done in reaction of those who perpetrated acts of violence against Jews, and the random violence were not conducted in localities where violent acts were done.  The principal criteria were:

First, the targets must be accessible, and

Second, the terror attacks must kill the maximum of civilian Palestinians…”

In their National Bulletin, the Irgun displayed their satisfaction of the 3-week-long terror attacks on Palestinians, throwing bombs in crowded markets, Mosques, hand grenades in buses, machine-gunning passing trains…

The 3 weeks spree of random violence killed over 140 Palestinians, a number far greater that the Palestinian resistance movement killed in 18 months…

The leader of the Irgun, the Polish Zionist Vladimir Jabotinsky, wrote in 1923:

We must develop the colonies behind a “Wall of Steel”, backed by a protective force that could not be broken.  The Palestinians (labelled Arabs) will never accept any Jewish colony as long as they conserve a slight hope of dislodging it.  A voluntary agreement is not thinkable. We have to resume the colonization process without taking into consideration the humors of the indigenous population...”

David Ben Gurion, leader of the Zionist Haganah organization, rallied to that strategy, though he publicly condemned Jabotinsky fascist methods (Jabotinsky was a staunch admirer of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini)

The terrorist Zionist Stern organization, lead by Menahem Begin and Yitzak Shamir, (both later to be elected Prime Ministers in the 80’s), merged with the Irgun as Ben Gurion proclaimed unilaterally the establishment of Israel in 1948.

The Stern and Irgun and Haganah conducted terror attacks and genocides in many Palestinian towns and villages, forcing the Palestinians to flee: The Palestinians believed the leave will be of short-term duration, as the UN will negotiate their return…

Actually, the Zionist organizations started collecting intelligence pieces on the villages and towns they planned to transfer by terror tactics since 1939.  They waited for a war to start to giving the green light for the execution of detailed plans in 1947, the year England decided to relinquish its mandated power over Palestine.
