I heard a couple days ago that Israel relented from constructing another wall of shame on Lebanon’s borders: The announcement referred to Lebanon President steadfast complaint that there are still 13 points on the border Not yet resolved with the UN. Anyway, Hezbollah strong message is good enough and excuse for Israel Not to open another front.

Tidbits #89
I conjecture that all the facts, observations, experiments., philosophy… will Not tell us anything “sustainable” of what is life and the universe. We need to know: How the majority, in any ethnic group, likes to conceive the nature of Life and the Universe? This knowledge is fundamental to evaluate the evolution of human “Emotional Intelligence“

Whether we admit it or not, every person has constructed a mental model of how he views the universe and life.
For example, was the universe created, is it infinite, is it timeless…
And what is life, the purpose of life, what happens after death, is there a soul, what happens to the soul, is the soul individual or a collective soul…?
Since antiquity, philosophers have been discussing and reasoning on the following matter:
“Do mankind enjoys an innate general spirit (regardless of ethnicity, culture, gender…) that expresses how he views the construct of the universe, or it is an individual learning process relevant to the manner the various sensory organs observe nature and people and organize the information”?
The hypothesis is:
Do people with sensory handicaps (blind, deaf…) extend the same kind of subjective understanding of the universe and life as “normal” people do, across all ethnic cultures with oral and written myths and traditions?
First, we need baseline stories on “What do I know about the universe and life?” from “normal” people with “normally” functioning sensory organs (vision, audition…).
The baseline stories should be captured from varieties of ethnic cultural entities in the five continents, privileging the oral cultures with No recognized written documents, and minority cultures with written cultures but Not read or disseminated universally.
The baseline stories must discriminate between genders (between group factors) and the ethnic stories within each gender groups.
The baseline stories must discriminate among the stage of maturity of the storyteller (young, adult, middle age, and older people).
The baseline stories must discriminate among the literacy levels of the subjects (such as they read and write in one language, read only, and only orally literate subjects). Thus, the team of experimenters must be trained to adequately record answers and stories in uniform fashion.
The next phase of the experiment is gathering stories of sensory handicapped people in the above ethnic and gender groups (blind, deaf…)
We may extend this experiment by artificially handicapping a normal subject by preventing him to see or to hear while resuming his “normal” live for a period. Do you think that his mental model of the universe might be altered significantly?
Another extension may be involving normal sensory subjects but with different mental capabilities and limitations (over developed or under developed brain powers).
This experiment would answer the question: “Are reading and listening to stories generate different types of observational data due to further brain processing mechanisms?”
The most essential preparation for the experiment is the designing of an exhaustive questionnaire with exhaustive options to educate the subjects on the varieties of viewpoints and myths.
For that purpose, the questionnaire will be tested on many preliminary samples of ethnic cultures in order to catch and collect the varieties of relevant options, sort of exhaustive compendium on the different myths and mental models.
I would recommend that the design requires every question to be answered. This means that those logical procedures of demanding the subject to skip several questions, as in filling tax forms, be eliminated: We should not fall in the bias of enforcing our rational logic on oral culture ethnic groups and the illiterates.
It is advisable that follow-up oral stories accompany answering the questionnaire. Then, another follow-up written story be attached to the oral story.
The written story would condense the individual story into a comprehensive and coherent story after the preceding two educational sessions.
The teams of trained experimenters would have to fill the initial questionnaire with the new information generated by the oral and written stories; missing information can be filled by default, using the original questionnaire for each subject.
Thus, data analysis can be conducted on the two questionnaires: the before learning process and the after learning process of the mental models.
I find it interesting that, after the written story, the subject would give his opinion on the current theories of astrophysicists on the universe in order to check the cohesion and compatibility of the subjects in their perception of the universe.
For example: what they think of the theory that this universe is the product of a collision between two universes; that a universe revolves around each black hole; that what we see is a simulated universe of a matrix universe; that the sky is a wall on which the image of the stars and galaxies are projected onto it (a universe as hologram); that the universe keeps changing every time we observe it…
Do you think that you might change your view if a theory (coming from an astrophysicist) impresses you?
The spontaneous suggestion is “why not ask a subject to tell his story before answering a questionnaire? At least we can have an original version, unbiased by constructed questionnaires.”
This suggestion is pertinent if it is feasible to nudge a subject to start telling a story without a prompt sheet containing the necessary lines of thoughts to guide the subject in the endeavor: The prompt sheet must be devoid of any biased suggestions.
In any case, I believe that devising such a prompt sheet is necessary, even if not applied in the experiment, in order to get the questionnaire developed and cleaned of idiosyncratic allusions and local imageries.
The experiment is complex and will need to be subdivided in meaningful stages of shorter experiments.
It is time intensive and for a long duration.
It requires training of large teams of researchers and experimenters. Preliminary experiments would show the best ways of experimenting piece meal this vast project.
Note 1: I tend to include materials we read and stories we heard as sensory inputs since they are processed by the brain, at various levels, as sensory observations.
Note 2: Many scholars present the view that what we actually sense are in fact “processed observations”, and not the raw sensed data, since all sensing observations are data processed by the brain at different levels of manipulations.
Good enough: We are dealing with what mankind is observing: That is what is available to forming a coherent structure of the universe and the environment we live into.
The follow-up lesson is: Other reasoning species must be viewing the universe differently since their senses have different capacities and limitations, and their brain structures are different from mankind.
Note 3: The essential question that the previous experiment might offer an answer to is: “If an individual is handicapped in one or more sensory organs then, by reading or listening to stories, can his brain re-establish what normal people comprehend of the universe?”
Note 4: I conjecture that all the facts, observations, experiments., philosophy… will Not tell us anything “sustainable” of what is life and the universe. What this experiment could boils down to is to “know”:
How the majority, in any ethnic group, likes to conceive the nature of Life and the Universe?
This is fundamental to to evaluate the evolution of human “Emotional Intelligence“

Was Henry Miller born to be a philosopher?
Note: Re-edit of “”I was born a philosopher…” (August 28, 2009)
Have you tried to read entirely a philosopher book? Even in a translated version? Unless at gunpoint and in jail?
(On the personal level, in the womb, I had never been told that I kicked; I might have barely stretched my legs and yawned in recognition of warmth and coziness. I was dragged out feet first. Once out, I barely kicked. I barely cried to express my discomfort. The physician left me for dead, and mother did her best to convince them that I actually served myself to her tits. I was 2 hours away of dying due to Typhoid fever in Africa, at the age of 5. Once released from hospital, from the cold chamber, I had to relearn walking )
I was born a philosopher. I was against life by principle; the notion of its futility.
People struggled around me and I refused to do any effort. If it appeared that I was making the effort it was simply to please someone else; deeply in I couldn’t care less.
You renounce the phantom of the spirit, once for all, and then the rest follows to the heart of chaos.
Deep inside me the moon shone; everything was sweet and smooth; way up it was total chaos and discordance.
In everything I did search for the extreme opposite, the contradiction. I differentiated between the real and the imaginary, the irony, and the paradox.
I was my worst enemy. I wanted to do nothing and I could have refused to do anything.
As a child I wanted to die; I wanted to give up; I didn’t see any sense for resuming the fight.
I was convinced that pursuing a life that I didn’t solicit would never bring me any proofs or substance; would not add or remove anything from nothing.
All the people around me looked grotesque or failures, especially those considered to have succeeded who were boring to make me cry.
It was not sympathy that guided me; it was a weakness in me who expected nothing but watching the spectacle of human miseries so that I might bloom.
I aided nobody for the sake of doing him good: I had not the courage to do otherwise.
Behavioral change seemed to me perfectly futile.
On and off a few friends would convert and I would feel a surge of vomit.
I had no need of God and neither did He.
If God did exist then I would calmly advance toward him and spit on his face.
What bothered me highly was that people would think good of me at first sight.
Maybe I had the virtues of loyalty, generosity, and fidelity but they were due to my indifference because I had the luxury of envying nothing and nobody.
I had but pity for people and things. I trained myself not to desire anything violently; I thought that I was independent and would grant wishes with my own volition. I wanted to feel free in thought and in action. I was rotten from the start.
Kids frequently rebel or feign to rebel; I cared less.
As far as I can recall my first impression is of cold, snow, and frost on the windows.
Why people do move to live in cold places: they are idiots and cowards. Anywhere people live in cold regions they work to their bones and preach to their offspring the gospel of hard work; which means the doctrine of inertia.
People of the cold regions have exposed by force the wrong ideas. Nothing is done without thinking of tomorrow that never comes.
The present moment is but a bridge; they keep complaining and growling on that bridge; not a single intelligent being among the people of the cold region thought of blowing off that lousy bridge.
The people of the cold weather are proud braggers who never had the spirit of adventure. They have tormented spirits, incapable of living the moment. They ransacked and ruined the world everywhere they set foot.
People think that I am a person of adventure. All adventures that I undertook were never planned and they were forced upon me and I had to endure them. The only real adventure is a march toward the inside of knowing oneself.
In several instances I was in the self discovery adventure but never prosecuted it to the end: I always found myself in the streets and bumping into the people crowding these streets.
I crisscrossed the world and no where else did I experience as much humiliation and degradation as in the USA.
I have not met a single person in the US who was really rich, really happy. I tried hard to get out of the loop but I was from this land and the evil was in me.
Any event has its own contradiction.
The desire of all my life was parallel to life. Life didn’t awake any interest in me.
What did interest me later on was grasping the feelings and expressing them powerfully; the feelings and thoughts that I fail to express clearly irritate and bore me.
Note 1: This post is an abridged version of the first 10 pages of “Tropic of Capricorn” by Henry Miller. I translated the pages from the French edition. You may compare Miller’s style with mine. Sentences in parenthesis are mine.
Note 2: I am different from Henry Miller.
Miller was aware of his capacities, limitations, and emotional behavior since he was a kid; I was not that conscious of mines; I started self analysis way after I was 55 of age.
Miller was born in the cold North; I was born in hot Africa.
Miller worked in all kinds of jobs when he was still adolescent; I did all that after I flew to the USA at the age of 25 and for over 20 years and during and after I earned a PhD in Industrial Engineering.
Miller experienced all kinds of humiliations and degradation while he was pretty young; I did experience these humiliations throughout my life and it is an ongoing process.
Miller was tall and athletic; I was not.
Miller was a sex maniac. I consider that males are denied erogenous parts and should Not feel any urge for sexual pleasure. Just a mental decision to please a girlfriend when in need.
Miller managed to be published and became quite wealthy; I am penniless.
What make the whole difference is being consciously aware of yourself when a kid. Not many enjoy that kind of grace and awareness at such a young age.
I was barely conscious of myself as a kid and barely recall how I survived to live that long.
Actually, I am aware that I have No emotional intelligence, maybe due to lack of faked imagination, and didn’t care to observe people, until in older age, out of a decision to connect to youth and be funny at my expense.

Tesla, the electric-automobile manufacturer led by famed CEO Elon Musk, has struggled mightily with safety over the past few years. California nonprofit Worksafe, a worker safety advocacy group, recently made headlines when it reported that the injury rate at Tesla’s Fremont, California, plant was more than 30 percent higher than the industry average in 2014 and 2015.
Musk insists, however, that safety is the number one priority at Tesla.
He claims that recent actions, like the company’s hiring thousands of employees to create a third shift and reduce excess overtime, have made a major impact in lowering the injury rate. (Fatigue is main cause of injuries in hard jobs)
A recent email Musk sent to employees indicates just how seriously he’s taking the issue.
Here’s part of the email, as reported by news site Electrek:
No words can express how much I care about your safety and wellbeing. It breaks my heart when someone is injured building cars and trying their best to make Tesla successful.
Going forward, I’ve asked that every injury be reported directly to me, without exception.
I’m meeting with the safety team every week and would like to meet every injured person as soon as they are well, so that I can understand from them exactly what we need to do to make it better. I will then go down to the production line and perform the same task that they perform.
This is what all managers at Tesla should do as a matter of course.
At Tesla, we lead from the front line, not from some safe and comfortable ivory tower. Managers must always put their team’s safety above their own.
If Musk proves true to his word, it will be a remarkable example of a company leader who’s willing to do what it takes to affect change–and show that he isn’t afraid to get down in the trenches.
Emotional intelligence, the ability to make emotions work for you instead of against you, is an essential quality of effective leaders.
While Musk’s opening words will prove touching to some, it’s his promise to take action that is most powerful. To personally meet every injured employee and actually learn how to perform the task that caused that person’s injury is remarkable for the CEO of any company.
Truly effective leaders know that to inspire their followers, they must practice what they preach and set the example. They aren’t afraid to delegate, but they also know when they need to take matters into their own hands.
When a serious problem lingers, they increase their involvement and work tirelessly to make things better.
Your people also need to know that you’ve got their back. Are you all talk? Or are you willing to put yourself out there for them?
Musk’s offer is one of the best ways to do this.
When a manager takes the time to work alongside a frustrated team member, with a goal of better understanding that person’s perspective, good things happen. This exercise, although time-consuming, builds empathy and rapport, and can prove extremely motivating.
Unfortunately, few managers are willing to make that type of investment.
So, ask yourself today:
What is my team’s biggest challenge or pain point?
What can I do to make things better?
If you can answer those two questions–and follow through–it won’t matter what your job title is.
Your colleagues will be ready to follow.

Emotional Intelligence? Like what behaviors?
By DANIEL GOLEMAN, APRIL 7, 2015
What makes a great leader? Knowledge, smarts and vision, to be sure.
To that, Daniel Goleman, author of “Leadership: The Power of Emotional Intelligence,” would add the ability to identify and monitor emotions — your own and others’ — and to manage relationships.
Qualities associated with such “emotional intelligence” distinguish the best leaders in the corporate world, according to Mr. Goleman, a former New York Times science reporter, a psychologist and co-director of a consortium at Rutgers University to foster research on the role emotional intelligence plays in excellence.
He shares his short list of the competencies.
1. SELF-AWARENESS
Realistic self-confidence: You understand your own strengths and limitations; you operate from competence and know when to rely on someone else on the team.
Emotional insight: You understand your feelings. Being aware of what makes you angry, for instance, can help you manage that anger.
2. SELF-MANAGEMENT
Resilience: You stay calm under pressure and recover quickly from upsets. You don’t brood or panic. In a crisis, people look to the leader for reassurance; if the leader is calm, they can be, too.
Emotional balance: You keep any distressful feelings in check — instead of blowing up at people, you let them know what’s wrong and what the solution is.
Self-motivation: You keep moving toward distant goals despite setbacks.
3. EMPATHY
Cognitive and emotional empathy: Because you understand other perspectives, you can put things in ways colleagues comprehend. And you welcome their questions, just to be sure. Cognitive empathy, along with reading another person’s feelings accurately, makes for effective communication.
Good listening: You pay full attention to the other person and take time to understand what they are saying, without talking over them or hijacking the agenda.
4. RELATIONSHIP SKILLS
Compelling communication: You put your points in persuasive, clear ways so that people are motivated as well as clear about expectations.
Team playing: People feel relaxed working with you. One sign: They laugh easily around you.
4. Relationship Skills:
“Compelling communication: You put your points in persuasive, clear ways so that people are motivated as well as clear about expectations.
