A detour stroll in “Doubts Park

Note: Re-edit of “One lovely stroll in Doubts Park; (Jan. 4, 2010)”

I always claimed that whatever I do is meant to search for the Truth.

That is a lie: I run away from the fact that our reality is fundamentally the universe of doubts.

I should admit that this world of doubts is specific to humankind, I should accept it, integrate it in my life and enjoy strolling in Doubts Park.

It is nice, now and then, to take a short break from listing the thousands of questions that constantly perturb cognitive man and try to please my huge ego by trying to resolve a single existential question, just for the fun of it.

I was led lately to read with some attention detailed descriptions of heaven and hell.

I was shocked with these infantile and crude stories that are carbon copies in all religious Books.

I had the impression that all these prophets had No imagination for even slight variations; actually the only tiny variations were in the sadistic punishment of those intended to be visiting hell.

I had another revelation: all those prophets started recounting scenes of heaven and hell after they received recognition and enjoyed the tendency to clinging to power.

It was as if scaring people is the common technique to all who hold on to power.

All those prophets lived the masochist life till getting recognition and then let their imagination loose on the saddest sadistic punishments and unbridled lusty desires.

It was like all prophets are of a certain type of men that sustain only extreme binary attitudes in their deep subconscious, while disseminating the message of learning to tend to the middle line in the spectrum of our passions.

I have something to say; but first let me refresh your memory.

On Heaven

You have got about six rivers.  You select from the following items:

First, a river of pure running potable water;

Second, a river of milk or yogurt with even taste (you might have to settle on your favorite taste; if you didn’t have the opportunity to taste all the fruity flavors then never mind: there must be available more exhilarant venues to investigate; anyway, you have all the time unless you start rebelling again. If you are allergic to milk then no problems, go on selecting other items);

Third, a river of honey (I assume in those days only unadulterated bee’s honey was marketed; more Book’s research funding is required);

Fourth, a river of perfume (not specific, you would have tough choices if you failed to try all scents while alive);

Fifth, a river of wine, most probably beer, which never gets you inebriated enough to utter foul sentences or curse the Devils.

(I guess you should have choices of alcoholic beverages: you earned it.  My hypothesis is that you can opt for the four rivers to be of the wine kinds: you earned it, mind you).

Sixth, a river of oil (I am strongly inclined to believe that it is olive oil; tough luck if you hate olive oil; you can switch this river to scotch or vodka, I guess).

How to drink is no problem in heaven: you can use crystal cups, jars, Jeri can of gold, silver, or titanium (that last metal is of my own invention) or just sit and lap straight from the source or I would suggest letting your sweetheart pour it from her fresh mouth.

Oh, on the subject of sweetheart you have to be patient a little: I just like suspense.

If none of these rivers are to your liking then remember: the guiding light is not to worry about heaven: it is the other alternative that you should mind about.

From what I read I came into understanding that we are all going first to hell.

Pretty much as in immigration concentration camps.

Then, very few would be shown the exit door; and a few would be acrobatic and focused enough to cross the long thin bridge to heaven.

I should stick to heaven now.

You don’t have to worry at all.  Just imagine the varieties of condiments!

Do you like fresh, juicy, and ripe fruits?  Do you love dates, grapes, or pomegranates?  These are the fruits mentioned in the Books.

Remember, you better get a taste for Levantine assortment of fruits; but it is also said that you can have any kind of fruits and I suggest you don’t get frazzled that soon.

The beauty of it is that trees will deliver their fruits in any position you feel comfortable in (such as standing, lying, stooping, or sitting).

My impression is that you could order the branch to drop the fruit in your open mouth.  If I physically toiled hard in my life then that would be my ideal option of delivery.

Hey man, wait.  We have got the best news ever.

It will blow your brain away. You will have all the women and adolescent men for any kind of intercourse you desire. You can throw bacchant parties any time you want and you will be perched on high wide beds, very cushy, and perfectly ergonomically comfortable.

Good tiding for the women kind.

You women are nowhere mentioned in the picture of heaven and hell: the Jewish sect in Judea never endowed you with souls anyway.  But don’t you worry as yet.

God will recreate you to pleasure the select men.  Sorry, since very few men will be selected to go to heaven then don’t push: not all of you will be re-created.

The good news is, if created, you will all have white skin, screwy eyes (hawal), long hair, and none of you would be over 33 of age.  You will enjoy firm tits; it is up to the select men to shape your tits to the fruit of their desire. That is how I figure it.

Certainly you will be wearing jewelry and silk dresses. I think that, unlike men wearing only fine white robes, you might have a wide selection of fabrics and colors.

On Hell

This section would be brief: I know that you guys have suffered enough in this life that you don’t give much weight to the puny punishments that you might be allotted in hell.

Hell is simply fire, a lot of it, and its temperature is 60 times the temperature of earth core.

Hell is not upgraded with fire alarms. It was the result of lack of imagination: a million fire alarms going off at all the time would certainly scare the Bejesus out of anyone, regardless if he was engulfed in fire and black smoke.

Thus, don’t fear that much, please.  The mechanical instruments for conveying pain are archaic; they are mostly chains, gardening, and harvesting implements…

There is no diabolic high tech suffering machines.  I failed to read that you might be half buried in sand to be nibbled at by ants in a scorching desert.

Guantanamo Bay was, since time of creation, in the visual field of God but he refrained at the last second: God wanted to test the evil potentials of men.

You may read the reports of the commissions on human rights and the juicy archives in the United Nations.

You will be zipped straight to hell with no recourse for leniency, even if you witnessed close death encounters several times.

Just writing this article, any sacerdotal caste should judge me as good as dead a dozen times.

As for what might open the gate of heaven is simple: allow no one to share power with God, have field charity in the heart coupled by notarized proofs.

I doubt that predicators go around describing in details the conditions in hell and heaven; they tend to just mention hell and heaven as if everybody was told once in his life the stories in these final relocation places: I guess once is enough to grab the attention of kids.

Most probably, hell was described to kids at untenable moments, but I doubt heaven was ever a favorite topic to parents.

My suggestion is if we feel ashamed to tell the minute details of hell and heaven as recounted in the Books, if these stories should be labeled X-rated for cruelty or sexuality and not suited for less than 18 years of age, then the words hell and heaven should be scraped from theology teaching.

Faith should not be based on a reward system: If Heaven and Hell are the return for a life-time of toil and struggles then, they don’t come close accounting for justice.

Faith is this pleasuring drama of playing stupid, communicating our confidence in human good natured heart and well intentioned purpose to rescuing his fellow man in time of need.

Sometimes, true faith generates reciprocating pleasure and it increases human dignity on pragmatic criteria. It is not worth feeling bitter of your limitations: suffice to believe that all living creatures are holy.

The first attribute of human kind is freedom to doubt; the second attribute is liberty to take pride in what we doubt.

The level headed should desire to die.

If hell, then it is a piece of cake compared to our hellish life on earth; ask any persecuted inhabitant who was detained, tortured, and humiliated.

Ask people dead from famine or thirst.

Definitely, hell has lost its power to scare.

If heaven, then hmm…it won’t be such a bad condition after all to live in.

I might be slightly worried of boredom, but I trust God would endow the sexy “Houries” with enough playfulness to keep me interested for eternity.  Heaven definitely can have my vote.

Life is all about taking a single stand for human dignity.

I sincerely hope that my readers are invested with strong sense of humor.

Guantánamo torturer: Led brutal Chicago regime of shackling and confession

A Chicago detective who led one of the most shocking acts of torture ever conducted at Guantánamo Bay was responsible for implementing a disturbingly similar, years-long regime of brutality to elicit murder confessions from minority Americans.

In a dark foreshadowing of the United States’ post-9/11 descent into torture, a Guardian investigation can reveal that Richard Zuley, a detective on Chicago’s north side from 1977 to 2007, repeatedly engaged in methods of interrogation resulting in at least one wrongful conviction and subsequent cases more recently thrown into doubt following allegations of abuse.

Zuley’s record suggests a continuum between police abuses in urban America and the wartime detention scandals that continue to do persistent damage to the reputation of the United States.

Zuley’s tactics, which would be supercharged at Guantánamo when he took over the interrogation of a high-profile detainee as a US Navy reserve lieutenant, included:

Shackling suspects to police-precinct walls through eyebolts for hours on end.

Accusations of planting evidence when there was pressure for a high-profile murder conviction.

Threats of harm to family members of those under interrogation used as leverage.

Pressure on suspects to implicate themselves and others.

Threats of being subject to the death penalty if suspects did not confess.

The Cook County state’s attorney office now has an examination open into a second conviction involving Zuley, filings in an Illinois court showed on Tuesday (The Guardian is publishing the first part of its investigation on Wednesday.)

While representatives of the state’s attorney’s office told the Guardian that the examination concerns only a single case, the office is seeking civilian complaint files regarding Zuley from a local independent police review authority.

Richard Zuley
While ‘assigned’ to the US military base at Guantánamo Bay, longtime Chicago detective and US Naval reservist Richard Zuley led one of the most brutal interrogations ever conducted at the prison. “I’ve never seen anyone stoop to these levels,” a former Marine Corps prosecutor said. The wrongful-conviction examination into Zuley follows an extraordinary 2013 decision by state’s attorney Anita Alvarez to free an innocent man Zuley’s faulty police work sent to prison for 23 years.

Lathierial Boyd, convicted in 1990 of murder, accuses Zuley in a federal civil-rights lawsuit of planting evidence and withholding crucial details.

Boyd told the Guardian that Zuley had a racial animus as well. “No nigger is supposed to live like this,” he remembered Zuley telling him after the detective searched his expensive loft.

Other Chicago cases detailed by the Guardian, centering on three people interrogated by Zuley who are still in state prison, turned up evidence in police precinct houses of severe and internationally condemned tactics in Guantánamo Bay interrogation rooms.

Several of those techniques – prolonged shackling, threats about family, pressure to confess – used by Zuley bear similarities to those he enacted when he took over the interrogation of Mohamedou Ould Slahi at Guantánamo, described in official government reports and a best-selling memoir serialised last month by the Guardian as one of the most brutal in the history of the notorious US wartime prison.

After Zuley took over in July 2003, Slahi was subjected to even more extreme interrogation tactics: multiple death threats, extreme temperatures, sleep deprivation and a terrifying nighttime boat ride in which he was made to believe that worse was in store.

Most official accounts of Slahi’s torture have concealed or glossed over Zuley’s name.

A weeks-long Guardian investigation, unraveled from footnotes in Slahi’s memoir and involving thousands of police and court documents plus interviews with two dozen veterans of both Guantánamo Bay and Chicago criminal justice, complicates that history.

As Slahi did, inmates said they confessed untruthfully to try and stop the treatment by Zuley.

“Basically, they just tortured me, mentally, and somewhat physically, with the cuffs,” Benita Johnson, an inmate serving a 60-year murder sentence, told the Guardian from prison of the interrogation that led to her conviction.

Chicago has long had an institutional problem with police torture. An infamous former police commander, Jon Burge, used to administer electric shocks to Chicagoans taken into his station, and hit them over the head with telephone books. On Friday, Burge was released from home monitoring, the conclusion of a four and a half year federal sentence – not for torture, but for perjury.

“There have been a number of really bad apples in the Chicago police department who unquestionably have railroaded unknown numbers of innocent people into prison,” said Rob Warden, the founder of Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions. But Warden said he had “never heard of any case in which people graduated from Chicago to Guantánamo”.

Zuley, through a spokesperson, declined to cooperate with the Guardian’s investigation, despite multiple requests. Neither his attorney nor the Chicago police department responded to a detailed list of questions.

Mark Fallon, the former deputy commander of Guantánamo’s now-shuttered investigative task force for the military commissions, said Zuley’s interrogation of Slahi “was illegal, it was immoral, it was ineffective and it was unconstitutional.”

When Zuley took over the Slahi interrogation in 2003 – his name has gone widely unreported – he designed a plan so brutal it received personal sign-off from then-US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

“The way that he approached interrogations at Guantánamo,” Fallon said, “if that’s any reflection of what he did in Chicago, it would not surprise me that he’s got a few issues going on right now.”

A different take on the slaughtered US journalists

There’s now two American journalists killed by the Islamic State ISIS.

People will probably be upset by the following words as callous. I don’t want to blame victims for their death, but their paths seem dangerously similar.

Both were freelancers. Both hopped around war zones.

Neither understood the languages of the places they covered. Neither knew those places well.

Tributes to them talk about how they were dedicated to telling the stories of people.

But if they were so dedicated to these individuals, why didn’t they stick around in the places they covered?

Why didn’t they live in these places rather than have “stints” in Yemen, Egypt, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria?

Why didn’t the deaths of far more experienced journalists and local reporters forewarn them?

And why didn’t the news outlets that published their materials give them a contract?

The Global Post had a rather suspect article titled “Here’s what James Foley meant to us.”

The outlet didn’t even sign the guy after he won an award.

And why do we focus on these people? Because they’re American?

Are the 190,000 Syrians killed not worth us knowing their names?

I feel bad for the people who knew them, and if I ever fall victim to their fate then these words may prove to haunt me.

But if we truly abhor the group that killed them, and feel bad for what has happened to these journalists, then let us not glorify them any further. They aren’t “the story.” So many freelancers were just lucky: many went to places they could not locate on a map

  • Note 1: So many didn’t even know the country, or knew the borders of the country or much of its history and culture.

Lucky because those who assisted them were worth more than gold and barely got a hint of appreciation from the foreign journals
We all have seen scores of people being slain like sheep and beheaded. But for such method to be applied on US citizens?
Close combat is not appreciated by US military: the enemy must die by drones and airplanes in order to safeguard the illusion of not “really killing”
Note 2: The Sotloff family appointed a lawyer claiming to be ready to dialogue with Abu Bakr on religion and Coran and he barely can speak Arabic.

US government to force-feed hunger strikers at  Guantánamo Bay during Ramadan

The US government has refused to stop force-feeding detainees on hunger strike at Guantánamo Bay during the holy month of Ramadan.

There are 166 detainees at Guantanamo, 106 of them are on hunger strike.

Of those, 45 of them are being fed through tubes directly into the stomach, according to the court papers.

In its court filing, the US Department of Justice also denied claims that it was giving the drug Reglan to the detainees.

In court papers rejecting a petition by four of more than 100 detainees said to be refusing food, the US said the feedings provided “essential nutritional and medical care” and would not interfere with religious observance of Ramadan, which begins on Monday.

published from New York in the guardian.co.uk this July 3, 2013

Observant Muslims fast daily from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan.

Lawyers for President Obama also said that the “public interest lies with maintaining the status quo“.

Last month, Obama gave a speech in which he promised to work towards closing the base, and to allow the release of many of the 86 prisoners held there who have been cleared for transfer.

Obama described the camp as a moral problem for the nation that had to be solved.

The feeding of detainees, via nasogastric tube, will be carried out by the facility “before dusk and after sunset in order to accommodate their religious practices”, they said, “absent any unforeseen emergency or operational issues”.

Colonel Greg Julian, director of public affairs for US southern command,  said: “We do not force-feed observant Muslims during daylight hours during Ramadan. These policies have been in place for years, and are consistent with our mission to safely detain while supporting the religious practices of those in US custody. If told to do differently, we will do so.”

Government lawyers said that enteral or force feeding is authorized by federal regulations when a prisoner’s life or permanent health is in danger, and is related to “preserving order security and discipline within the detention facility“, according to court documents in the case.

US government lawyers also argued that the detainees bringing the case, Shaker Aamer, Nabil Hadjarab, Ahmed Belbacha and Abu Wa’el Dhiab, are not “persons” under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and are therefore not protected under it.

A group of detainees began a hunger strike in February this year, in protest at their detention. Some have been detained without trial for more than a decade.

It also highlights Obama’s failure to deliver a 2008 campaign pledge to close the camp.

Aamar, who has spent 11 years without trial at the camp, despite being twice cleared for release, recently spoke of increasingly brutal tactics being used in an attempt to break the strike.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the US, reiterated its call on Monday for the force-feeding of hunger-striking prisoners at Guantanamo Bay to stop.

Lawyers for the detainees described the tube feeding as “barbaric” and hit out at the failure of the US government to provide a specific guarantee that no feeding would happen during the day.

Cori Crider, counsel for the men and strategy director at Reprieve, said: “These are more weasel words from the Obama administration – they say they have ‘no plans’ to force-feed during the day in Ramadan, but give no guarantees. Meanwhile, on the eve of Independence Day, they ride rough-shod over the fundamental right of people to choose what goes into their bodies. ”

Jon Eisenberg, US counsel for the men, said: “The Obama administration argues here that ‘the public interest lies with maintaining the status quo’. The status quo is that these men are being held indefinitely without any sort of trial, even though they were cleared for release years ago.”

“Consider the irony of the Obama administration arguing here that the Guantánamo Bay detainees are not ‘persons’ within the scope of US law guaranteeing religious freedom, in a post-Citizens United world where even corporations are endowed with legal personhood.”
