Maid living in the Mistress house?

There are many States that allow private agencies to import foreign maids to serve in private families.  The maid lives in the house with the family and work from 6 am to midnight, always standing and serving, and cleaning until the last member of the family is gone to bed.

The maid in Lebanon cost $150 a month and the entire yearly amount is paid to the agency upfront when the commissioned maid arrives in Lebanon “legally”?  Most of the time, the contract of the hired foreign maid is for two years.

Maids arriving to Lebanon are mostly from Ethiopia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Philippines, and from other African States.  Workers at gas stations are mainly from Egypt.  Construction workers are from Syria.  Sanitation workers are from Bangladesh.  You have the impression that every foreign State has a specialty work to do in Lebanon.

Lately, a semi-official report from Madagascar’s Minister of Public and Social Affairs, Nadine Ramorson, denounced in the weekly “Jeune Afrique” the ill treatments of the maids in Lebanon and that many returned home dead or badly injured.  The number of maids from Madagascar climbed from one thousand in 2006 to over 7,000 in 2010.

Before the civil war in Lebanon that started in 1975, maids were hired from Syria.  The child maid’s father would show up once a year to cash in his dues and leave without even sitting and talking to his child daughter of less than 13 of age.

When a kid, I never asked the maid to fetch me a glass of water or for any personal needs; it is shameful to see parents considering as legitimate and right for their kids to be ordering maids around for simple tasks they can and should be doing on their own.

I can testify that the Lebanese, in general, are racist with respect to the poorer classes.  It is worse, when this domestic or worker is from a foreign land.  A black colored worker is called Black or coal.  The higher the number of maids the higher the status of a family.  I can see families bringing more than one maids to events and ceremonies in order to wash dishes, take care of every whims of kids, and serve on tables.

There were periods when Lebanese were respectful to older members and had a sense of shame working others overtime.  Social life is going bad.  You may pay a visit to our prisons to witness the carelessness we handle human rights and human dignity.

Many foreign maids are incarcerated for months without any due process, simply because they could not pay to renew their work permit or purchase a ticket home.  Many maids had committed suicides and we never hear of these cases or the follow-up investigations, if any.

Fact is, we the Lebanese are living in a big prison, with no way out if you have not the money to getting out.  Maybe 5% of the Lebanese are well off (mainly the public servants and families of deputies) but the rest of us are living under $150 per month, with a standard of living higher than Paris and London.

It is no enigma if most Lebanese are servile to their sectarian leaders who were the culprit of this civil war that lasted more than 13 years:  They want to survive and seek political and employment supports.

It is no enigma of this growing racist tendencies when the leaders of the civil wars returned as ministers and deputy after the civil war and have been totally absolved of their genocides by a Parliament of their own.

We have no dignity left to start demonstrations and revolts.  If it were not for Hezbollah’s steadfastness then, Lebanon would have been a State from the past, a non-entity….

I published in my autobiography the following passage:

“At the time it was the custom for well-off family to hire girl child helpers from Syria around Safita.  My family was no exception. The father of any of these children between 10 to 12 years old would visit once a year to collect his money and leave.  Over the span of 6 years, we had 3 child helpers. The first one was named Salimeh and she was my age of 12 but was much taller, robust and all muscles; I recall that I used to box her buttocks, hard as rock.  She was not pretty but she loved us dearly and we got used to liking her cheerful attitude.

The next one was even younger and she used to get lost every time she had to accompany my younger sister Raymonde from school.  Once she lost her way and Raymonde was already at home and she saw Raymonde on the balcony and she hollered to my sister “come down to go home”.

The third helper was short, hard working and pretty and she was in love with me and I was at the age when I could not stand romance and drooping eyes.  I was glad when her father took her away but she was in cry and would not leave.  Mother was hard on the helpers and she made them wake up very early and work all day long for over 13 hours, but mother was meticulous that they keep clean, eating of our own food and wearing decent clothes.  It was hard for me to accept the conditions of these helpers once I became conscious of their alienation, away from their homes for over two years sometimes.”

The late author, Mai Ghoussoub described the life of one these kid helpers in her book “Farewell Beirut” and how she turned out to be a ferocious and fearless fighter during the civil war; most importantly, she never tried to get any revenge on her “masters”, even though the eldest son had raped her and she was confined never to leave the apartment; the girl was just utterly happy to feel free.”

Arab Sex Art: Star of the Internet (June 14, 2009)

In her Preface of “Love in the Moslem Countries Fatema Mernissi wrote:

“My editor wanted to publish an investigation on love in the Moslem countries that I had written 20 years ago and that I had published in the magazine ” Jeune Afrique” (Young Africa).  I told my editor that no one is interested to read Ibn Hazm (an expert on sex and seduction during the Arab Andalusia period around the year 1000).

My academic friend that I had invited for lunch to extract information from said to me: “You are disconnected of the digital galaxy. The translated book of Ibn Hazm is the best seller on the internet.”

Fatema felt a surge of anger: her male friend was only 7 years younger; then how come he is connected and I am so far beyond in technology?

Fatema learned that the search engine of Google had mentioned Ibn Hazm 200,000 times in less than 0.1 second.  There is a site based in Paris Iqra Shop Com that offers CD to learn Arabic, the Koran and the Hadith for the francophone people and other clothing garments.

The book of Ibn Hazm “The affinities of love and The Necklace of the dove” is sold for 12 Euro and described as a must read reference on the subtleties of love proper to Moslems.

Thus, Fatema re-caled her editor and said “Ibn Hazm was right. Love is eternal.  I will have to add a chapter on love in Islam in the time of Internet”

The Al Jazeera channel (the Arab counterpart of CNN) is based in Dubai and has Qaradawi as star commentator on love and sex in Islam.  Imam Qaradawi calls on an army of experts in religion, fekh, shari3a, psychology, psychoanalysis, sociology, and physicians of both genders to answer the thousands of questions that flood his bureau.  Qaradawi posts his answers on the net (al internet wal-hub) and publishes booklets at low cost in matters of marriage and love for the adolescents and their parents.

Islam Online has competitors in Muslima.com to aid searching for the appropriate partner in friendship, discussion, romance, and marriage.  In the subject of romance the choc of civilization is a non issue because it is universal as the object of world ethic.

For example, estimate in 1999 indicate that aging people had invested over a trillion dollars for rejuvenating their look, especially growing hair on their bolding skull.

Ibn Hazm was born in Cordoba (994-1064) of an aristocratic family.

His father was vizier and he became vizier in Valencia.  Ibn Hazm was polyvalent in erudition; he was grammarian, scientist, philosopher, and a religious jurist. He lived in a period as troubled as ours; he led the Zahirite movement against the rigid Malekite sect.

He was made vizier twice and was incarcerated several times when power kept shifting among the warring factions in Andalusia. He came to the conclusion that the best remedy for the decomposition and disintegration of society was to learn authentic love and experience the power of “falling in love”

Other famous Arab authors in seduction are Ibn Al-Jawzi “Denigration of Love” (Dammu Al Hawa) and Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyya “The Garden of lovers” Rawdat al muhibbeen).  If all fails, you may fall back to “One thousand and one nights” where you find all kinds of detailed psychoanalytical description of emotions and sexual desires.

It appears that oil may deplete but the medieval archive of Arabic manuscripts on love, sex, and seduction is here to be mined, translated, published, and disseminated in all form of media because romance is for the eternity.

The Arab civilization was the richest in the field of sexual desires; it dissected sexual desire in all its forms, shapes, and varieties; they explained sexual desire in the minute details, pornographically, physiologically, anatomically, and psychologically and left us scientific manuscripts in that field with accurate terminologies.

Bi-Weekly Report (#17) on Lebanon and the Middle East (April 25, 2009)

Every now and then you read optimistic editorials that an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians is very close because the US wants it, this time around.  I heard these optimistic reflection 15 years ago by the Egyptian Ambassador to the USA who later was appointed Foreign Minister.  You are led to believe that a Syrian-Israel accord is already completed and just waiting for a suitable political climate; and we all wonder and worry what “suitable political climate” entails and it has never been but more wars and massacres to Lebanese and Palestinians.

In the weekly “Jeune Afrique” (Young Africa) the editorial of Bechir ben Yahmed would like you to sit tight and see a wonderful movie of peace achievement unfold in the region no later than two years from now.  Why?  Because the new US Administration has set its mind that the establishment of a Palestinian State is the corner stone for its long range policies in the Middle East and that the European community badly wants this resolution on ground that it can no longer afford to pay for frequent reconstructions in Palestine and Gaza.

Why the US has finally set its mind?  Simply because a panel of 10 illustrious men in US politics has proposed this resolution; they are Brent Scowcroft, Paul Volcker, Zbigniew Brzezinsky, James Wolfensohn, Henry Siegman, and others. What is the ready plan of the US Administration? First, the return of Israel to its 1967 border with “concessions on several parcels of lands”; second, dividing Jerusalem as Capital for the two States; third, the return of Palestinian refugees to the Palestinian State; forth, the admission of Israel of its responsibility and financial compensation by the “World Community”; and finally, the stationing of International Peace Force on the borders. Nothing more and nothing less; see you all how simple and straightforward has this plan boiled down too!

In the mean time: first, the Palestinians and the Arab States have to recognize a purely Jewish State in their midst; second, the US has to recognize Hamas as a democratically elected party as it recognized the democratically elected ultra racists Netanyahu and Avigdor Lieberman; third, the US has to recognize that Israel has nuclear bombs and missiles that can deliver them and thus has the responsibility not to leave decisions of mass destruction in the hands of foolish racist and Arab hate mongers; and forth, the US has to stop delivering white phosphorous bombs to Israel. The German cargo transporter “Wehr Elbe” discharged 300 containers of military ammunitions in Israel and containing White Phosphorous bombs that caused the outcry of the international community for being dropped consistently on Gaza and burning thousands of Palestinians. What else did these containers deliver? Cluster bombs, you guessed it. Every week a child or a shepherd dies or is maimed in south Lebanon due to the millions of cluster bombs that Israel “delivered” in the last day of the 2006 July War. That is not the end of the story; two other cargo shipments are in the pipelines. Why? The previous Bush Administration has signed an accord with Israel for 25 billion dollars in free military package aids!  President Obama does not want to rescind criminal decisions, as if closing Guantanamo Bay prison is of a lesser magnitude in hypocrisy.

An Iranian proverb says: “Bolding men dies with a toupee of abundant curly regrets” This proverb squarely applies to Israel ex Ehoud Olmer PM.  For three years, Olmert had the opportunity to sign peace agreement with Syria and establish a Palestinian homeland but he failed to do so.  In his departure farewell he delivered a public testament urging his successor Netanyahu to boldly and courageously grab a historic initiative to that effect. If these decisions had no other alternatives then why has Olmert failed in his responsibility?

Israel, the US, and the European Union would like the general public to consider Iran the main nemesis for world peace.  They don’t dare say that Pakistan that owns nuclear bombs is falling to a Taliban-like extremism.  They also don’t dare say that the over 300 million Moslems in India are mostly of Shiaa leaning like Iran.

In Lebanon, over 750 candidates for the Parliamentary election in June 7 deposited $6,000 each to be eligible.  Many withdrew from the race and recovered $1,500; the remaining lost their deposit.  The treasury would be over 3 millions dollars richer.  The New York Times published yesterday that Saudi Arabia is pumping hundreds of millions of dollars to support the government candidates.  Saad Hariri is the medium for receiving and distributing the Saudi dirty money.  Saudi Arabia monarchy would like the government to return as majority even with one candidate.  All the main lists of candidates have been formed by both alliances.

Today is the official anniversary of the Armenian genocide; the Armenians in Lebanon are not happy that Seniora PM decided to hold a meeting for the cabinet today.  I had posted an essay on the genesis of the Armenian genocide under the title “Cursed Cities: Karss”
