Israel Moves to Outlaw Criticism of the Military

The Israeli Knesset has approved the first reading of a bill that would ban organizations critical of the country’s military.

The contentious bill, which passed by 35-23 votes yesterday, was proposed by Education Minister Naftali Bennett. The chairman of the right-wing Jewish Home party is seeking to criminalize organizations that are critical of Israel’s occupation of Palestine.

Bennet’s primary target is the group known as Breaking the Silence. The organization of veteran Israeli combatants who speak out against the brutal nature of the occupation has become a major thorn for the government. Ex-soldiers have exposed wide-scale abuse, looting and destruction.

Their testimonies shed light on the grim reality of the occupation.

Addressing the bill, Bennett said:

Breaking the Silence has long ago crossed the line of legitimate discourse, when it chose a path of slander and lies against IDF soldiers on the international stage.”

Another Israeli lawmaker Shuli Mualem accused Breaking the Silence of seeking to “undermine” the regime and its army soldiers.

If the bill passes two further reading it would authorize the education minister to bar groups and individuals from entering schools.

One of the concerns raised during the debate was that the groups’ activity could lead to Israeli soldiers being prosecuted in international courts or foreign countries for actions carried out as part of their military duty.

In their response to the bill, the group accused Bennett of promoting “occupation education” and trying to “crush every democratic value on the altar of the settlement movement.”

It also noted that those who hurt Israeli soldiers are actually “politicians like Bennett, who send us to control the Palestinians and are silent when settlers routinely attack soldiers and Palestinians.”

The anti-occupation group further emphasized that “the only way to stop us is to end the occupation.”

This bill is the latest in a long list of measures adopted by the Israeli Knesset to suppress dissenting voices in the country.

Last November, a law was introduced to criminalize activists that support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

A separate bill paving the way for annexation of the West Bank was also approved yesterday. Israeli lawmakers agreed to expand the jurisdiction of Israeli courts over “Area C” of the West Bank.

The Bill was tabled by another right-wing Israeli minister, Ayelet Shaked.

The area is currently ruled by the military however under the new bill, legal claims in the occupied territory would be treated as though the territory is part of Israel. The legislation will also treat Israeli settlers living in the West Bank like those living within the pre-1967 borders, or the so-called Green Line.

Palestinian representatives of the Knesset have slammed the measure as another initiative by Israel to normalize the occupation and to advance “creeping annexation” over the West Bank.

“The High Court of Justice has never treated the Palestinians in the territories justly,” said Yousef Jabarin, a member of the Joint List.

I am often criticized here for being a ‘traitor’ to my fellow Jews.

Which leads me to wonder — what is the right definition of family? Of neighbor, of brother and sister? Surely those to whom we are morally accountable, yes?

Surely those with whom we choose to have a relationship of justice and compassion, not a matter mere proximity, mere ethnicity?

This may annoy the people I am already annoying even more, but I can’t avoid referencing that rabble rousing paradigm-inverting marginalized-people-identified rabbi Jesus (many scholars today portray the historical Jesus as a radical egalitarian rabbi firmly in the Jewish social justice tradition).

So Jesus is talking to a lawyer (or as a lawyer and in fact he taught jurisprudence in Saida, Lebanon).

Remember that’s a certain man’ who was beaten would have been Jewish to this Jewish audience and the Samaritan would have been a member of a despised, marginalized, one-down, untouchable “other” out-group at that time:

Jesus answered, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. To me this Jewish radical teacher was saying, your neighbor and your brother or sister are those who treat you with humanity, and vice versa.

Which seems not a betrayal of Judaism — for me to agree with this — but a fulfillment of the kind of Jewish ethics I was taught growing up — also universal ethics.

It’s completely Kafkaesque. This is not limited to Israel or Jews, their propaganda machine has been so effective, the world over including some newer generations of Arabs hold this view.

It is incredibly isolating for Palestinians.
Palestinians have felt deserted, that we walk alone in a surreal reality. When Israel talks about the threat of being pushed into the sea, it is the Palestinians that WERE literally pushed into the sea in the hundreds of thousands in 1947-48 ending up in refugee camps in Lebanon, Gaza and Egypt.

When Israel talks about the threat to their existence, it’s the Palestinians whose very existence has been threatened since the advent of Zionism and they’re not just threatened, 89 whole families in Gaza this past summer no longer exist. When Israel says, ‘they want to wipe us from the map’.

It is Palestine that HAS been wiped from the map. Israel claims Palestinians use their children as human shields, yet not a single shred of evidence exists to substantiate this claim (everyone has looked everywhere), instead evidence abound of Israel using Palestinian children and adults as human shields.

There’s reality and there’s the lie.
Although I do not seek to fulfill Godwin’s law but it’s hard not see the Israeli narrative as the Big Lie, so huge, told so often, everyone the world over believes it and Palestinians – a small nation – scattered in the desert, tired, thirsty, lonely, scared without the funds or the reach, has been trying to counter this lie and million other lies that followed for nearly a hundred years.

We are tired and many times driven to the point of a break in our sanity. Consequently, we appreciate the help, which has quenched our thirst for truth and justice just a little bit.

Stolen Land: Israel built 150 Jewish-only cities

Bostonians have been checking out the “ONE WORD” campaign in their subway system, describing Israel’s crimes against Palestinians.

The ad campaign was launched this week by Ads Against Apartheid (AAA), a local Boston-based nonprofit.

The ads are currently running in Boston’s downtown State Street Station where they can be seen by upwards of 13,000 riders per day. AAA’s website states they are “challenging Israel’s commitment to peace”.

The ads have already made headlines– in Palestine and Israel that is. Both WAFA Ads against Apartheid Launches Campaign Questioning Israeli’s Commitment to Peace  and Ynet,  MBTA approves pro-Palestinian ads in Boston subway quote Chadi Salamoun, the President of Ads Against Apartheid, and Richard Colbath-Hess, the NGO’s co-founder:

“The ads simply state the facts and are backed up with citations from credible human rights and international organizations, including the United Nations,” said Chadi Salamoun, the president of Ads Against Apartheid, who added that “if the ads are shocking, that’s because the reality on the ground is shocking.”

Richard Colbath-Hess, a Jewish-American faculty member at the University of Massachusetts, and the co-founder of Ads Against Apartheid, noted that “American tax dollars help the Israeli government maintain an incredibly brutal military occupation, which has denied the Palestinian people their basic rights for decades. These ads show what Israel’s occupation and apartheid really look like, and it is important for Americans to see that.”

Colbath-Hess told me that the ads featuring one word per ad– HOMELESS, VIOLENCE, and STOLEN–  each represented an aspect of Israel’s “unrelenting injustice towards Palestinians.” IMHO, the “ONE WORD” approach is in your face, educational and very effective:

Ads Against Apartheid is planning to expand the campaign to other cities all across America. The campaign has other hard hitting ads up on their website too. Instructing readers to “Stop Talking, Start Acting” and support spreading the campaigns.
