How one tweet ruined my life

This is the first time I speak about my ordeal with Twitter mobs in public, and I do it with a sense of duty and to raise awareness about the dangers of this kind of online bullying, in hope that we could learn something from this unpleasant episode.

Karl reMarks posted. 17 Feb 2015

The story begins yesterday around six in the evening, when I came across a website called It’s Back To The Future Day! which proclaimed that today (yesterday) was the day that Marty McFly went forward to in Back to the Future, along with a picture of the dashboard of the car showing the actual day.
So I tweeted the image with a line that said “If you want to feel really old, today is the ‘future’ in Back to the Future”, not expecting that this single tweet would change my life forever.

Shortly afterwards someone tweeted me saying: “Today is a day for ANOTHER rude photoshoping. (sic) The real date is 21.10.2015.”

The tweet was disturbing for two reasons.

Firstly, someone knew the actual date McFly went to in 2015 by heart, and by actual I mean pretend of course because it’s a bloody movie in which nothing is really actual, and

secondly, this was considered ‘rude photoshoping’. I didn’t make much of it however, and thought it was an over-zealous fan.

Soon after I was flooded with similar messages, of varying grammatical standards, but all saying pretty much the same thing. “No it isn’t It’s a hoax resurfacing for the 1000th time. The real date is Oct 21st.” “no, it is not. Back to the Future day is October 21, 2015. Google before you tweet is the new think before you speak.” and even more zealously: “21 October 2015. 21st October 2015. HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO JUST FUCKING WAIT?”

I quickly realised that I had inadvertently stumbled into the unpleasant underbelly of Twitter, infuriating a powerful lobby of Back to the Future truthers and accuracy guardians.

The flood of corrective tweets didn’t stop, I couldn’t keep up with the mentions on my Twitter feed. The accusations were coming thick and fast, aiming at my most cherished attribute: my integrity.

I couldn’t eat or sleep as the burden of this ugly incident weighed on me. Those 45 minutes were really difficult.

Then things got even more complicated. Most people said that the real date was 21 October, but some said 16 October, and some others 26.

I felt completely disorientated. What was the truth? What is the images people were sending me were also ‘rudely photoshoped’ and the real date wasn’t 21 October at all? Maybe the 16-Octoberists were the holders of the truth and they were being silenced by the more powerful 21 October conglomeration?

What future was there for humanity if we couldn’t agree on this one date? I was experiencing a sense of loss in authority and intellectual framework very similar to what the West experienced after the end of the Cold War.

The someone tweeted me saying: “October 21, 2015. Watch the damn movie” and another “it’s like you guys never watched the movie…..10/21/2015!” and another and another.

I felt so worthless, my self-esteem hit rock-bottom. How could I have forgotten a date in a movie I had seen 25 years ago? I am clearly a loser.

All those self-confident, attractive looking people had memorised this important date, and I had forgotten. My priorities in life were all wrong.

I considered deleting the offending tweet, but I remembered people are advised not to do that. Then I thought of deleting my Twitter account and disappearing from the public eye. But was there as escape in this age of social media and surveillance? Someone even threatened me: “I’m going to hurt you.” Will I be able to run away from them?

Fortunately by now my bus journey was over and I had arrived home. In total I had spent an hour and a half in hell.

All because I missed out the actual date by 8 months. I had been up against jihadi fanboys and dictator trolls on Twitter before but they weren’t anywhere near as cruel or as savage as the Back to the Future zealots.

This has left me completely broken. My therapist says I am making quick progress and I will, learn how to live with the trauma.

I probably won’t be able to watch Back to the Future ever again, but it’s ok because the special effects were crap.

Note: Do you know how the date of New Year in the west was finally fixed?

French king Charles 9, then 14 of age, was touring France with his mother Catherine of Medici. Every province and city had a different date for New Year. The King decided on January 1st. In most countries, the New Year was on March 21, the beginning of Spring, especially in the Near East,

(Nawrouz in Iran and many communities) and is still celebrated in many countries, along with January 1st.

Mother Day has always been: The first day of celebration for the New Year on April Fool Day

The French King Charles 9 declared the New Year to be on January 1st, according to the Gregorian Calendar. This was 450 years ago.

Instead of the mother, the haphazard date of Jesus birth was substituted to represent the New Year.

Charles 9 was the eldest son of Catherine of Medici, and he was pretty unstable mentally, as was her second son Henry 3.

Consequently, Charles declared April First, the former New Year day in all the western hemisphere, to be called April Fool because many still held the celebration on this day.

The dates of these celebrations were altered 3 times: When the Julian calendar was adopted, the moon calendar, and the Gregorian calendar.

Even though the dates were changed, the people in the Middle-East kept the tradition of starting the celebrating on March 21 (Nawrouz) and ending after April 1st.

Nawrouz is currently celebrated in Iran, the Kurds, Afghanistan, nIdia and many Caucasus countries.

Mother Day, or the Fertility Goddess, Ashtar (the queen of the day and night stars) had always been the first day of celebration that culminated on the New Year in April First.

Mother Day coincided with the equinox (day hours matched the night hours) and was also considered the beginning of the Spring season.

Many archaeological finds have described how the celebrations proceeded.

Syrian New Year’s eve was celebrated on the first of April 6764 years ago.

During the celebration it was prohibited to punish salves, to admonish children, or to work. Courts were not held even 10 days after Aril 1st.

The first 4 days were reserved to performing plays and recounting stories of myths. These festivities were available to all to participate.

Syrian calendar was a thousand year older than the Hebrew calendar and 500 years older than the Pharaoh’s.

The months of the calendar were named after the seasons and the corresponding main tasks performed during the month.

March (Aazar) is the month of flowers. April (Nissan) is the Spring, May (Ayyar) is the Light, June (houzayran) the harvest of cereals, July (Tammouz) the disappearance of the God Adonis (Adonis was killed in this month),  September (Ayloul) is the month of sorrow for the impotent period of fertility…

Mind you that Palm Sunday follows Mother Day and the subsequent celebration of Jesus rebirth.

Nietzsche’s “Thus spoken Zarathustra” (February 20, 2009)

Zarathoustra “The one who owns old camels” (a tradition in antiquity to tone down the status of famous personalities in order to avoid jealousy and the cursed eyes) is considered the reformist Prophet (7th century BC) of the Ahura Mazda religion in antique Persian Empires. This Empire extended from Turkey to the Indus River (Pakistan).

Nietzsche wrongly adopted the meaning of the Greek name of Zoroaster “The Star of Gold“.  The God Ahura Mazda (The Lord or the Wise Spirit) re-organized the Universe in order to lock in his arch enemy Angra Manyu (The agent of evil thinking) in a time capsule. Thus, people in the universe have to deal with the “Devil of lies, confusion, errors, and death” before they are freed out of the time constraint

In the antiquity, Ahura Mazda represented the day, and the Sun was the symbol of divinity, and fire was the medium through which Ahura Mazda listened to prayers and spoke.

There were countless sub-divinity representing values of Ahura Mazda and many personalized divinities like Mithra (God of justice represented by the Sun) and Anahita (Goddess of the water), and the God of wind, destiny, and so on.  The forces of life and good will ultimately vanquish the forces of evil and death.

So far, there are no historic proofs, archeological or epigraphic discoveries for indices that Zarathustra, Abraham, Moses, or Lao Tseu did exist except in oral traditions.

It appears that the concepts of angels, the Judgment of the dead, the Holy Ghost are interpreted from the Zoroastrian religious tradition.  The history of humanity is enclosed in three time periods of 3,000 years each:

The first period witnesses the encapsulation of Angra Manyu; the second period witnesses the awakening of Angra Manyu and the terrible confusion and instauration of death; the third and last period experiences the last struggles between the forces of evil and good.  The number 3 in all religions of the antiquity is a divine number, and corpses were laid by three in the tombs.  The number thousand should not be taken literally because it refers to a huge number.

Thus, when Zarathustra was born he knew that he is living in the last period and that he will not die and would return to Ahura Mazda.  The disciples of Zarathustra claim that their Prophet learned to be in communication with Ahura Mazda.

The Greek philosophers were fascinated with the teachings of Zarathustra and they emulated many concepts of the Ahura Mazda religion for the good life, beauty, the rejection of ascetic life and celibacy, and devotion to heavy drinking. Soldiers would go to combat wearing all their jewelries. The Persian King would revisit his decisions taken when fasting, and would verify his previous decision after he is literally drunk.

Many Mazdi followers fled persecutions in south east Iran in the provinces of Yazd and Kerman in the 10th century and immigrated to India and Bombay. The French explorer Anquetil-Duperron traveled to India in 1755 and learned Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, and Farsi in order to investigate the religion and traditions of the Mazdi followers who were established in the region of Surat (northern region of Pakistan and bordering Afghanistan).

Anquetil-Duperron published three vast volumes titled “Zend Avesta, the work of Zoroaster“.  There are large communities of Mazdi in California and India. The Bahai followers adopt the Mazdi beliefs in addition to Islam and variant of Judaism.

Even current Iran, the Islamist Republic, celebrates the Mazdi festivities of New Year (Nawrouz) and the Red Wednesday, a festival of fire and pleasure.

In the summer of 1881, Nietzsche was sitting by the lake of Sils-Maria in Switzerland; it is located 6,000 feet above sea level and “far from things human”.  He said:

“I was waiting for nothing.  Beyond the good or evil, I was enjoying of light, shadows, the lake, the noontime, and of no purpose. Then, friend, suddenly one became two and Zarathustra walked by”  That is when the decision to write “Thus spoken Zarathustra” had taken flesh and for over two years, Nietzsche would resume his manuscript where ever he is located.

Since the Zoroastrian religion professed the duality between good and evil and thus, according to Nietzsche, Zoroaster preached an “extra-morale” doctrine beyond the good and evil and proselytized the eternal return of man, a sort of an extension to the doctrine represented by Dionysus.  The Greek God Dionysus had the power to change and to be transformed into another player; this power is mainly of lightness, perpetual movement, and erotic.

Nietzsche would sign a few of his articles Dionysus. Thus, Nietzsche wrote: “Only the one who can change is related to me.  This life, as you are living it now and had so far lived, you will have to re-live it many other times. You will have to learn to be kind to yourself and toward life. You have got to mark the future of the being with the highest will for power“.

While the German philologists claimed that Zoroaster invented morality, Nietzsche would argue that Zoroaster preached the contrary to morality and that he was the representative of thinker on life.

Nietzsche contrasted Zoroaster to Socrates whom he judged to cling to a moral set.  (I think Socrates is being evaluated according to what Plato said about Socrates’ teaching.  It is Plato that ascribed to set of moral standards and of eugenics practices for a new Republic.  Socrates wanted to dialogue with people in power to discriminate those who are free thinkers and reflect on prevalent moral standards from those who abide by religious dogmas and current paradigms)
