Jews in Israel agree on ethnic cleansing. Statistics might be higher for Jews Not living in Israel?

Note: re-edit of the article of 2016 “Nearly half of Israeli Jews believe in ethnic cleansing, survey finds”

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin called the findings a ‘wake-up call for Israeli society’

Lizzie Dearden @lizziedearden

Almost half of Jewish Israelis believe Arabs should be “expelled or transferred” from Israel, a survey has found. (Is that why Israel built Walls of Shame around its borders that its constitution never delimited?)

A study carried out by the Pew Research Centre found that around one in five adults questioned “strongly agreed” with the controversial statement, which amounts to ethnic cleansing under some definitions.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the act as “attempting to create ethnically homogeneous geographic areas through the deportation or forcible displacement of persons belonging to particular ethnic group”, while a United Nations report in 1993 additionally specified the use of “force or intimidation”.

(Actually, the Palestinians are Not different ethnically, and yet they have got to be transferred for economic reasons in order to acquire free lands and resources)

(Most of the Jews in Israel are from various ethnic background, so how this definition can stand if Not believing in religious myths and acquired privileges?)

Pew-Research-Israel.jpg

In Pew’s survey, 48 per cent of Jewish respondents said Arabs (Israel and Western colonial powers that established Israel try Not to say Palestinians in order Not to give them an particular identity) should be removed from Israel, while a similar share disagreed with the statement.

While 54 to 71% of Jews who defined themselves as ultra-Orthodox, religious or “traditional” supported such a step, only about 36% of the secular community did (They have vested interests in cheap labor?).

“While religious identity influences Israeli Jews’ views on the expulsion of Arabs, the survey finds that even after taking this and other demographic factors into account, Jews’ views on the expulsion of Arabs are most strongly correlated with their political ideology,” the Pew Research Centre report noted.

“The further to the left on the political spectrum, the more Jews are likely to oppose the expulsion of Arabs from Israel, just rhetorically.”

Those supporting the cleansing tended to be Russian-speaking, rather than Hebrew or Yiddish, male, and with a Jewish education to secondary level or below.

(Racist behavior emanating from internal feeling of Not being to the level)

Pew-Research-Israel-2.jpg

Reuven Rivlin, the President of Israel, called the findings a “wake-up call for Israeli society”.

“It pains me to see the gap that exists in the public’s consciousness – religious and secular – between the notion of Israel as a Jewish state and as a democratic state,” he added. (This President would have liked that 99% of the Jews agree on the transfer of the Palestinians?)

“A further problem is the attitude towards Israel’s Palestinian citizens.

Israeli Arab is the Israeli government’s definition of non-Jewish citizens and many members of the minority, who are predominantly Muslim, identify as Palestinian.

In the same survey, almost 80% of Jewish Israelis said Jews deserved preferential treatment in Israel, while a similar proportion of Israeli Arabs claimed they had seen discrimination against Muslims (and Christians).

The research appeared to show that all religious and ethnic groups had lost hope for a two-state solution, with half of Palestinians saying co-existence was possible compared to 40 per cent of Jewish Israelis.

The most recent round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks collapsed in 2014, just before a 7-week war in Gaza, and tensions have worsened in recent months with a resurgence of violence that has seen an estimated 28 Israelis and 172 Palestinians – mostly attackers – killed.

Pew conducted through face-to-face interviews in Hebrew, Arabic and Russian with more than 5,600 Israeli adults from October 2014 to May 2015 for the research.

The survey used the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics’ definition of the Israeli population, which includes settlers living in the West Bank as well as Arab residents of East Jerusalem.

Note: Another urgent survey is needed, after the Trump pronouncement on Jerusalem and the realization of the Israelis that No effective preemptive wars are feasible anymore

Raising Children Without Religion

Gone are the days of the unyielding God-fearing mother as the archetype of good parenting, suggests a recent article from the Los Angeles Times.

According to multiple reports, research has shown that a secular upbringing may be healthier for children.

According to a 2010 Duke University study, kids raised this way display less susceptibility to racism and peer pressure, and are “less vengeful, less nationalistic, less militaristic, less authoritarian, and more tolerant, on average, than religious adults.”

But the list of benefits doesn’t stop there.

Citing Pew Research, the TimesPhil Zuckerman notes that there’s been a recent spike in American households who categorize themselves as “Nones” — their religious affiliation being “nothing in particular.”

According to Zuckerman, modern nonreligious adults account for 23% of Americans.

As early as the ’50s, that figure was only 4%.  (And yet, US preemptive wars against so many countries increased dramatically during that period)

And with godlessness on the rise, researchers have begun analyzing the benefits of nonreligious child rearing more closely.

“Far from being dysfunctional, nihilistic and rudderless without the security and rectitude of religion,” writes Zuckerman, “secular households provide a sound and solid foundation for children, according to Vern Bengston, a USC professor of gerontology and sociology.”

Bengston oversees the Longitudinal Study of Generations, the largest study of families and their religious affiliations in America.

After noticing an uptick in nonreligious households, Bengston added secularism to the study in 2013.

Many nonreligious parents were more coherent and passionate about their ethical principles than some of the ‘religious’ parents in our study,” said Bengston in an interview with Zuckerman. “The vast majority appeared to live goal-filled lives characterized by moral direction and sense of life having a purpose.”

“For secular people, morality is predicated on one simple principle: empathetic reciprocity, widely known as the Golden Rule. Treating other people as you would like to be treated. It is an ancient, universal ethical imperative. And it requires no supernatural beliefs.”

And check this out:

Atheists “were almost absent from our prison population as of the late 1990s,” accounting for less than 0.1% of inmates, according to reports by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

“This echoes what the criminology field has documented for more than a century,” Zuckerman writes, “the unaffiliated and the nonreligious engage in far fewer crimes.”

Additionally, a troublesome report from the BBC last year found that religious children were less likely than their nonreligious peers to distinguish fantasy from reality, based on a study conducted by Boston University.

Presented with realistic, religious, and fantastical stories, children were then asked whether they thought the story was real or fictional.

Researchers found that “[c]hildren with a religious upbringing tended to view the protagonists in religious stories as real, whereas children from non-religious households saw them as fictional.”

And why is this problematic?

Because it muddies the waters of a child’s differentiation between reality and fiction, and even the spiritual from the fantastical.

Read Zuckerman’s full report over at the Los Angeles Times. And then with all this in mind, go forth and rear your godless hellfire demon children, y’all.

People in Gaza: In such a Psychological mess

No need to look at the physical devastation to feel the aftermath on the mental well-being of the Palestinians from all the successive preemptive wars of Israel on Gaza

KHUZAA, GAZA — Mosallam El Najaar, the retired customs official who is walking me through this small village in southern Gaza,  said “It feel like the Day of Judgment.”

It looks like it, too. Houses are as squashed and scattered as paper cups.

A water tower is torn up close to the ground like a stalk of corn. Mosques, schools and factories are blasted, useless shells. Olive trees that were almost ready to yield their fruit are reduced to kindling.

It goes on, block after block here in Khuzaa, as well as in Beit-Hanoun in the north, Shejaia to the east of Gaza City, and Rafah in the south.

Altogether 20,000 homes are destroyed and uninhabitable, 39,000 people are still living in UN shelters, and perhaps 100,000 more are homeless, crowded in with relatives. Building materials promised by the UN and international donors are stalled or unavailable.

But the catastrophe here is not just physical. Upheaval has wrecked lives, severed families and upended routines.

“The psychological damage is even greater,” says El Najaar, who is leading some local reconstruction efforts. “And it will take much longer and be far harder to repair.” It’s a tragically common refrain here — from political leaders, homeless women, university officials and my own team of trauma counselors from the Center for Mind-Body Medicine.

I’ve worked for 20 years with psychological trauma – during and after the war in Kosovo, after the earthquake in Haiti, with U.S. troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and in Israeli towns like Sderot that have been continually shelled by Hamas for years before, as well as during, this summer’s war.

And since 2002, I’ve worked here, in long-beleaguered, isolated Gaza, leading workshops, training local clinicians and leaders and setting up a program of self-care and group support to deal with the population-wide psychological trauma.

In those decades, I’ve never seen psychological devastation this intense.

Almost all the hands I shake, seven weeks after the fighting has stopped, are cold with a “fight or flight” response that won’t quit even though the situation no longer demands it. When I ask children and adults in the half-dozen Mind Body Skills Groups that our Gaza team leads whether they have trouble sleeping, all hands go up.

Just about everyone has regular nightmares of bombs falling, tanks roaring toward them, body parts lying in the street, children buried under rubble, screaming for help that never comes.

In a resiliency-building workshop I lead, ambulance drivers from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society share the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder that afflict them: the sudden rages, flashbacks of the dead and dying, the long withdrawn silences.

These guys — as courageous, tough, and funny as the New York City firefighters they resemble — now say they cannot think straight or remember the simplest things. Their wives say they thrash their arms and legs and scream in their sleep.

Gaza’s long-enforced isolation and powerlessness continue to compound and reinforce every symptom. So, too, does an experience of Israeli aggression that everyone I speak with feels to be unprecedented.

For Gazans there was, during this war, no safe place and no way out. People who were told by Israeli soldiers to leave homes that were about to be bombed said they rushed for safety to the next street, where they found more soldiers blocking their way, telling them to go back.

When they returned to their own houses, bombs greeted them. “Something inside us broke,” says a man in Shejaiah whose two sons – the sole survivors of 26 family members – cling to him. “We didn’t think the Israelis would do this.”

In the school in Rafah where 3,500 homeless Gazans sleep like logs lined up on thin blankets spread over concrete floors, uncertainty about the future is crushing. Mothers fear the next round of Israeli bombs will kill children on their long way to still-standing schools. Parents are sure they’ll never be able to rebuild their homes or pay for their kids 10f8 ’ university education.

I have seen this level of distress, unaddressed, lead to fixed destructive biological, psychological and social patterns: agitated children and adults focus and function poorly; impatience explodes in domestic abuse; and free-floating fear and anger push desperate people toward individual and collective violence.

Our Gaza team tries to restore some small measure of control, and even hope. Kids doing slow “soft belly” breathing discover it’s possible to loosen knotted shoulders and quiet fearful thoughts.

They sleep better, and their nightmares are less overwhelming. Adults who express their fear, anger and frustration in our groups feel, at least for a while, that their thirst for revenge is slaked.

And those who help others, as well as themselves — in or out of our program – can still summon considerable energy. Exhausted school principals and teachers, as well as neighbors, find comfort and inspiration in helping other people’s kids. They, like El Najaar, the ambulance drivers, and my own team, move resolutely forward.

“We want to rebuild. Of course, we must rebuild,” concludes a principal sitting in one of our mind-body groups. “We need help to do it, help from Israel and the world. But it is not enough.” The Quran, he assures me, “tells us before we change the outside, we have to change the inside – the mind and the heart.”

Monsanto’s mega-plant blocked.  Any Progress on Climate Change?

These are No small time victories for worthy issues.

There’s a lot that’s depressing in the world today, but scroll down and see what our future could look like if we just stick together.

World issues on climate change, Monsanto, our oceans, the internet, democracy, free speech,  basic human rights, preemptive wars… have to be tackled vigourously.

After the March — Real Progress on Climate Change!! From Europe, the US, and China!

Progress on climate change
One of our 2,600 climate marches!

We desperately needed Europe to kick off a global round of ambitious climate commitments at a recent summit in Brussels, so I felt deflated when I was told by insiders there was “no way” the EU would stand up to big oil and coal to cut carbon emissions by “at least” 40% by 2030. But we didn’t back down, and they did it!

Here’s how we got from “no way” to a big win:

  • Drove the largest climate mobilisation in history with 675,000 people in the streets in 162 countries!
  • Got the UN Secretary General, 18 cabinet ministers, and countless politicians to join the march.
  • Delivered a 2.2 million strong petition calling for 100% clean energy to world leaders including French President Hollande.
  • Held advocacy meetings with the climate and energy ministers of France, Germany, Brazil and the UK.
  • Lobbied Poland, a key blocker on climate action, with an ad campaign that got news coverage throughout Poland and phone calls from Polish Avaazers.
  • Commissioned opinion polls in Germany, France, Poland and the UK right before the decision.
The climate march was a game changer
30,000 marchers in Melbourne!

The climate march was a game changer, cited by president after president in their UN summit speeches. While hundreds of organisations contributed to the march and the win in Europe, our role was crucial. The BBC said: “The marches brought more people on to the streets than ever before, partly thanks to the organizational power of the e-campaign group Avaaz.” And Germany’s Environment minister said: “I would like to thank the millions of people who have joined Avaaz…Without public support it will be impossible to stop climate change.”

US President Obama also responded to the climate march, saying: “Our citizens keep marching. We cannot pretend we do not hear them.”

Following the momentum building win in Europe, Obama met with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week – Obama promised reasonable-sized cuts in emissions, and China promised cuts as well, for the first time ever!

The momentum we desperately needed has begun…

After big oil and coal, what’s the next worst soulless corporate lobby? Yep, Monsanto. And that’s the next big victory that our community has helped win.

Monsanto’s mega-plant blocked!

Monsanto's mega-plant killed!
Protesting Monsanto’s seed factory.

When Monsanto tried to extend its grip over the global food chain with a massive new seed factory in Argentina, Avaaz members stood side by side with a local movement and stopped Latin America’s largest GM seed plant from being built this year.

Monsanto is a $60 billion mega-corporation that plays dirty. Here’s how we helped stop them:

  • Launched a 1 million strong petition and flooded the inboxes of decision makers with thousands of messages.
  • Worked with top lawyers on a briefing that showed Monsanto’s Environmental Assessment was illegal, making a splash in the media.
  • Released a poll showing that 2/3rds of town residents opposed the plant.
  • Supported local residents to build their power and a winning strategy.

Local grassroots leader Celina Molina said: “After more than a million Avaaz members stood with the people of Malvinas Argentinas, we won an important battle in the fight against Monsanto! From gaining access to documents previously denied to us by the authorities to running a game changing opinion poll, Avaaz was important for preventing the largest transgenic seed plant from being built in our backyard.”

Plus Big Wins on Saving our Oceans, the Internet, and Democracy

Big Wins on Saving our Oceans
Open Vote in Brazil
‘Nothing to hide!’ protest, Brasilia.

Thanks to several thousand Avaazers who donate monthly to sustain our small team, we can work on several issues at once. Here are some other big wins in recent weeks:

The Largest Marine Sanctuary in the World Created! – To support this critical reserve, over 1 million of us called on the US government, we commissioned an opinion poll in Hawaii, and more. And in the end, President Obama stood up to the big fishing lobbies and protected an area of the Pacific almost the size of South Africa!

Internet Neutrality Protected in Europe and the US!1.1 million of us lobbied the EU parliament to protect the free and open internet with strong rules on net neutrality.

And against all the efforts of the big telecoms companies, we helped get the win! In the US, Obama just followed suit and took a strong position to protect net neutrality that “stunned” the telecoms companies.

Brazilian Congress Ends Secret Voting! – After several months of steady campaigning with call-ins, activist stunts, media attention and more, Avaazers in Brazil (now 7 million strong!) pressed the Congress to almost completely end the shady practice of “secret voting.” It’s a huge victory for one of the world’s largest democracies.

These sweet Lebanese Christians kiss the hands of ladies and commit the worst of atrocities...”

The war crimes of Ariel Sharon are no less horrible than the crimes committed by Isaac Rabin, Shimon Peres and Golda Meir. (Asaad Bu Khalil angryarab.blogspot.com)
The worst crimes against humanity were committed during the invasion of Lebanon in 1982. The Lebanese political system has been trying hard to obliterate this criminal period from its educational program.
In his autobiography “The Warrior“, Ariel Sharon wrote:
“I came to Lebanon to have a feeling on the ground on the seriousness of the Christian Lebanese Forces intention and readiness to supporting our troops for our planned invasion of Lebanon in 1982.
I had met with Bashir Gemayel in Jerusalem, in one of his frequent visits to Israel asking for aid when I was minister of agriculture, and I sensed his determination and potentials.
I needed to pay a visit to the leaders of the Christian Forces in their homes and in their environment to acquire a better sense of adhesion to the planned invasion of 1982.
Bashir invited me to visit him in Jounieh and wanted me to meet with his father Pierre and other leaders. He also announced that a highly important Israeli personality will meet with him in early January.
When I landed from the helicopter, Bashir hugged me, as Arabs do, and said: “I knew it would be you that Israel will send to meet with me”.
After dinner, Bashir asked me: “What are we expected to do when you enter Lebanon?”
I said:
First, you must be able to hold on your land. Otherwise, there is nothing we can do if you lose your land.
Second, you see that hill? It is the Yarseh Hill overlooking the Defense Ministry. You must occupy it quickly as we enter.
Third, we are not entering West Beirut. Beirut is a Capital with embassies and ministries, and we are not about to be embarrassed with more troubles than we can handle. West Beirut is your responsibility and the Lebanese army to occupy.
I toured the Christian Mount Lebanon villages, riding in Bashir’s Mercedes that had a telephone, a facility we didn’t have in Israel. The people applauded us on the street while the Lebanese army passed by us and waved to us. Beshir even stepped out of the car to return the congratulation of the citizens: He certainly was very popular.
After a long day of visiting various villages and the civil war demarcation lines, I arrived at the house of Bashir in Ashrafieh. His wife Solange was waiting for us. I realized later on that she had a strong personality.
Solange prepared a copious dinner and the invitees ate in western style. Present were Pierre Gemayel (the father) and former President Camille Chamoun. Both of them were pretty old but still sharp up there.
Pierre was tall, slim and a perfect aristocrat. Chamoun was shorter and heavier but cooler and comfortable in our presence.
At coffee time, Pierre hoarded the talk in perfect French and a Mossad aid was translating to me into Hebrew. Pierre was crying slowly and whining on the losses and bloodshed they had suffered.
I looked at Chamoun who felt very disturbed by Pierre’s behavior and whispered in his ear in Arabic to get hold of himself.
They explained to me the election process for the Presidency and how many votes in the Parliament they need to secure… I told them that Israel is intent on securing its northern borders with Lebanon. As for the Presidency they have to rely on themselves with a small push from us in order to re-establish security and stability. We wanted a “peace treaty” with Lebanon and they have to be able to deliver on their promises.
Camile Chamoun got to the point and explained that a separate peace treaty will be an insurmountable obstacle due to the close business links with the Arab World and the presence of the huge number of Lebanese working in the Arab countries.  However, Pierre was more conciliatory on the potential for this treaty in the future.
I told them to start weaving close ties with the Shiaa and Druze sects. The Druze have never been enemies to Israel and the Shiaa were extremely upset with the Palestinian armed presence in the south.  I didn’t press on the topic of the possibility of Israel supplying the Shiaa with some weapons.
I emphasized that the Sunnis are not permanent enemies to Israel since we coexisted peacefully for two decades.
When I returned home in Israel, my wife Lily asked me: “What were your impressions?” I said: “These sweet Lebanese Christians kiss the hands of ladies and commit the worst of atrocities…
I related to Kamal Hassan Ali (Egypt counterpart during Sadat?) my visit to Lebanon and told him that the axe of Egypt, Tel Aviv and Beirut seems feasible.
My experience with Beirut is unimaginable. Cars were speeding with full horn on, the bars, restaurants and coffee shops plenty to crack… It seems that there was no civil wars for a stranger visiting Lebanon.  I was welcomed in a manner I joked that “if I needed political asylum anytime in the future, it is Lebanon that I’ll ask to stay in
I had visited Lebanon several times since then and I had the opportunity to know personally many of their personalities, writers, artists, poets and dailies.
After Bashir was elected president, I visited Bikfatya on September 12, 1982 and it was a very cheerful day: Hope and good expectation for stability were hovering among the invitees.
I had a chat with Beshir in private and tried to brush aside the negative impression that Menahem Begin had of Beshir, at their latest encounter in Naharia, two weeks ago. The chemistry between the old man and young man were missing.
Menahim told Beshir that he is not about to let go of Major Saad Haddad (the head of the Christian militia and part of the Lebanese army in south Lebanon) and Beshir was not about to reduce any of his prerogatives as President.  I was not about to let go of Saad Haddad too, but I comprehended the uneasiness of Beshir.
We discussed how to proceed with the “cleansing” of West Beirut of the “terrorists” (Palestinians and Lebanese), on account that should be the responsibility of the new Lebanese government.
I exposed the main points that Israel will propose in the peace treaty during the next meeting with our foreign minister Isaac Shamir on September 15. (Incredible, Beshir was to be officially inducted President on that day, and Israel would press for a meeting on that same day).
My meeting with Beshir lasted way after 1:30 am, and Solange had prepared a lavish dinner with all the dishes that I love.  She invited me and my children to pay a visit to the Presidential Palace once Beshir is in. She offered me an encrusted cherry box with Phoenician artifacts within.
Beshir volunteered to drive me personally to my chopper in Jounieh and I refused telling him: “These are crucial days and you should be very cautious in your travels and whereabouts”
(Beshir was assassinated on September 14 in the afternoon)
My meeting with Amine Gemayel (elder brother of Beshir) was lukewarm at best when I approached the proposed peace treaty.  During the burial ceremony of Beshir in Bikfaya, Amine was wearing a perfectly tailored white suit, shining snake shoes and his fingers were loaded with rings, and I realized that this “potential next President” will not be as easy and straightforward.
In January 1983, the poetess May Murr and her engineer husband Alfred Murr invited Lily and me. The streets were filled with welcoming people, though the government was less enthusiastic with my visit. (Amine Gemayel was elected President to replace his brother Beshir)…
Note 1: It is obvious from this autobiography that the invasion of Lebanon in 1982 was in full planning 6 months ahead of time and the intention was not to secure a buffer zone 40 km in south Lebanon. The plan was to advance toward the capital Beirut.
Over 20,000 Palestinian and Lebanese were killed and 3 fold that number fell injured and handicapped.  After the assassination of Bashir Gemayel, Sharon masterminded the genocide of the Palestinians in  the Sabra and Chatila camps, for 3 nights and 2 days, slaughtering 3,000 civilians in cold blood.
The camps had no Palestinian fighters, since they had been evacuated by sea a month earlier to Tunisia and Yemen.
The Israeli army had put siege around Beirut for 3 months, bombed the capital by air, land and sea and cut off power and water supply and prevented any foodstuff from entering.
Finally, the Israeli troops entered the Capital, robbed and looted all kinds of documents and artifacts. It was forced to retreat after 2 weeks with the increase of armed attacks against the Israeli checkpoints. They left by announcing in the streets “Stop shooting at us. We are leaving
The occupation of Israel lasted 25 years and they had to vacate in 2000 without any negotiations or preconditions. The Shiaa turned out to be fierce resistant fighters and Hezbollah is the main challenge to Israel further preemptive wars on Lebanon after the fiasco of July 2006 war.
Note 3: Part of the Arabic translation of Sharon’s autobiography

* كاتب عربي (موقعه على الإنترنت: angryarab.blogspot.com

“Unfruitful Nostalgia”, controlled nationalism and degraded sharing of cultures…

There was a tradition, long time ago, in several City-States in the Levant. This custom was for the city council to encourage and coax unmarried males and new couples, who could not afford the life-style in the city, to buy them a one-way ticket to a far away land, to work in mines, fend for themselves and survive on their own, and eventually participate in building a new town

These “unwanted citizens”, as was the case in the modern  colonial nations, and as it’s practiced now in financially “depressed countries”, discovered  lands and transferred their knowledge, language, customs and traditions.

The world was dominated by the rule of the Elite Class of dispatching abroad the unwanted, undesirables, and untouchables.

This “civilized world” was built with the unwanted classes of people who quickly learned that “It is not where you were born, but where you live and were accepted, as one of the community member in the “New World”, that is Your Home

New City-States around the Old World were created with the knowledge and customs of the period of the current generation of unwanted caste-off people.

Not long ago, apprenticeship was the system for acquiring the skills for an artisan job. There were a few disadvantages in that system:

1. The kids lived as a slave with his master, and if the sons of the master or one of his close relatives turned out to be as talented as the slave, there were no outlet for the kid to be paid decently as a talented artisan. The Gild system would cast out the talented poorer relative and he was to move outside the city limits or be transferred to one of the “colonies”

2. After many years of slaving, it is possible that the kid showed no talent in what he was supposed to master.  Given the short life expectancy, it was difficult to change job.

There came a time when transportation were relatively accessible to return to the Homeland, and to die there, setting the stage to this Unfruitful Nostalgia.

This kind of nostalgia gave rise to Controlled Nationalism, a gathering of closed-minded citizens who refused to associate with the world communities and share with their cultures.

I want to die where I was born” generated the downhill of cultural sharing trend.

As the unwanted got it in their mind to return and confront the old system, the Old Guard decided that it would be best to control the poorer classes instead of sending them to taste freedom abroad.

Instead, The Old Guard  dispatched the poor citizens to wars of expansion under the premise that “What benefit the Elite class will trickle down to the poorer classes of the newer generations”.

After colonizing a land, the less skilled “citizens” were sent to manage, direct, and train the promising natives in the mines and manufacturing outlet… where they spent most of their lives in foreign lands and left generations of new breeds.

The Roman Empire started the process of forcing their “civilization” on native people. The European colonial powers added insult to injury by allowing their criminals and violent prisoners to instill Law and Order on the occupied natives.

The less educated members of their elite classes were sent to “administer” the colonies, adopting the brute force and the latest techniques and vilest of ideologies in crushing the will of the natives, labeling them animals and barbarians, devoid of mankind soul that enable them to enjoy human rights.

And the ugly preemptive wars degenerated into the nastier of violence and brutality, and mankind learned to increase his brutality by a notch with every war.

Note: I wrote this post around 4 am while watching the movie Marugi or Ohuru Freedom. A 80-year old Kenyan who participated in the Mao Mao uprising against the British colonial power. The British killed his two kids and wife, and was detained in several concentration camps and was beaten and handicapped.

Marugi decided to learn to read and to joined a school with the kids after Kenya independence. He eventually was allowed to sit with the kids and was asked to deliver a speech at the UN to encourage learning and free schools for children…

Apartheid on all fronts: Israel persists on religious ideology in civic education, in mercenary colonial outpost in Middle-East…

Author Sami Michaeel, a Jewish Israeli from Iraq, has been delivering speeches and conducting seminars on the need for Israel to consider the alternative existential policy of integrating with the people in the region.

It is the responsibility of Israel to prove that it is ready to be part of the Middle-East region, and desist from resuming the policy of being the foreign colonial outpost to the western nations (Britain, France, and lately the USA in succession), desist from further preemptive wars, and seriously negotiate a long-term peace treaty with the Palestinians

Sami latest study was delivered at the “International convention for Israeli studies” hosted in Haifa.

Sami insists that Israel has become the worst apartheid State in the entire world.

Since 1967, after Israel expanded its occupation of Palestinian and Arab States lands, the spirit of Israel has been polluted and poisoned…

Israel thinks that it cannot afford to bail out as an outpost: It wants the most sophisticated weapons, keeps its weapon industry expanding and exporting more military hardware to African States, receive lavish donations to open up new colonies…

Adar Cohen, inspector of civic studies, agreed to sign on the published new civic education school book “On the road to civic citizenship“, a civic school book which transcend the fundamental Zionist ideology of apartheid and pure race, and exclusive Jewishness status…

And Adar was promptly sacked: This is not a good time for internal politics to demonstrate that Zionism is “that civic”

Israel has been applying a mind-fix policy to enforce her ideological thinking in all the Palestinian schools, and on diffusing any kinds of opinions that go counter to the radical Jewish religious ideology.

Israel has imposed on the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank its concept of “Economic Peace“, a unilateral contract based on the two premises:

1. Under the current conditions, there will be no resolutions for the cases of Jerusalem, the Palestinian refugees, and Hamas in Gaza. Consequently, the Palestinians should drop any illusion for any final peaceful agreement.

2. The occupation of Israel of the Palestinian territory is a serious threat to the stability and sustainability of the society in Israel. This colonial occupation is a demographic, moral, and political danger. The occupation is threatening to destroy the policy of forming a pure Jewish State.

The tacit reason for extending more trade and economic facilities in the West Bank is due to the evidences that points to the idea that occupation will inevitably ignite a Third Mass Disobedience Palestinian movement (Intifada). And Israel feels it be unable to tame this intifada by the sheer force, time around.

Thus, Israel is planing to extend small economical facilities for the current Palestinian Authority to lick on and defuse the growing grunting of the Palestinians under occupation.

How many kinds of wars can you differentiate among? Are there “good wars” for mankind?

The 20th century witnessed 140 armed conflicts, totaling more than 150 millions in casualties and at least 4 folds in severe injuries .  More than 20 conflicts produced over one million killed.  WWI generated about 9 million killed and WWII more than 60 millions.  Two dozen conflicts are still on going for decades and the toll is accumulating.

Mind that in every decade, one billion die of famine and from curable diseases.  The UN estimated that currently there is one billion individual earning less than a dollar per day and have no shelters:  Which means, all the most downtrodden of the billion of mankind will invariably die within the decade of famine and curable diseases.

Let’s give it a try at “war taxonomy“:

1. Wars of resistance against invaders and “foreign” army occupiers

2. Wars of independence and self-autonomy against “mandated” colonial powers (which are agreed upon by a select group of UN veto colonial powers)

3. Wars of “Necessity” for defending neighboring States that are at risk of being occupied by common enemies

4. Wars of “choices” by selecting allies at wars for promoting and trading weapons technology, under abstract ideological grounds

5. Preemptive wars decided by the 1% elite classes in the superpower club of nations, abusing the surplus jobless lower middle-class citizens, for plundering other countries wealth and raw materials…

6. Tribal wars or razzias for survival under dire living conditions

7. Civil wars for maintaining or establishing a Central State government

8. Civil wars for vanquishing old classes that subjugated the entire society

9. Civil wars among sectarian feudal Lords for the primacy of one religious sect

10. Civil wars supported by foreign powers to destabilize and divide a nation

11. Wars for testing weapon systems, chemical weapons, biological weapons… and the level of training of the troops

12. Wars for displacing other colonial nations in order to resume the plundering of raw materials… For example, how would you categorize the war of the US against Spain to conquer the Philippine? The war of the US against Spain to occupying Cuba?

13. Religious wars by two countries with majority religious affiliations

14. Wars against terror, terrorists, mafia groups, “rogue State”…

15. Wars for wiping out entire civilization and their “barbarous” ways of livings

16. Wars against the pollution of the climate and water resources

17. Wars for preserving endangered species, particularly mankind

18. Wars against apartheid or racist systems…

19. Civil disobedience movements and political disobedience movements

How would you classify the wars of the US on Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea…?

What is your categorization during the “Cold War” against the Soviet Union? A war of  ideology or war of global supremacy of a line of economic system, or demonstrating the more efficient method for abusing and enslaving the lower poorer classes?

Is the evolving war taking place in Pakistan, a mishandled and mismanaged targeted war or war of civilizations?

For example, Japan was negotiating capitulation in WWII, and yet the US decided to drop Two atomic bombs: How would you call this new kind of wars?

How would you describe the war of Israel on the Palestinian Gaza Strip?

What of the war of France and England on Qadhafi? Qadhafi declined the bids of France and England to purchase weapon systems two years ago and opted for exclusive Russian weapon systems…

TomDispatch.com distinguished only two kinds of wars waged by the US:

1. Wars of choice, and

2. wars of necessity.

For example, the preemptive war on Iraq was a war of choice by the elite 1% of the US richest class and arms industries.  Participating in WWII was categorized as war of necessity; why?

TomDispatch posted:

“America’s wars are remote.  They’re remote from us geographically, remote from us emotionally (unless you’re serving in the military or have a close relative or friend who serves), and remote from our major media outlets, which have given us no compelling narrative about them, except that they’re being fought by “America’s heroes” against foreign terrorists and evil-doers.

America’s wars  are even being fought by remote control — by robotic drones “piloted” by ground-based operators from a secret network of bases located thousands of miles from the danger of the battlefield.

The remoteness (of the battlefields), which breeds detachment if not complacency at home, is no accident.  Indeed, it’s a product of the fact that Afghanistan and Iraq were wars of choice, not wars of necessity.  It’s a product of the fact that we’ve chosen to create a “warrior” or “war fighter” caste in this country, which we send with few concerns and fewer qualms to prosecute Washington’s foreign wars of choice.

The results have been predictably bad.  The troops suffer.

Iraqi and Afghan innocent civilians suffer even more.

And yet we don’t suffer, at least not in ways that are easily noticeable, because of that very remoteness of the war sectors.

The US administration has chosen — or let others do the choosing — to remove ourselves from all the pain and horror of the wars being waged in our name.  And that’s a choice we’ve made at our peril, since a state of “permanent remote war” has weakened US military, drained the treasury, and eroded the rights and freedoms of the citizens.

World War II was a war of necessity. In such a war, all Americans had a stake.  Adolf Hitler and Nazism had to be defeated; so too did Japanese militarism.

Indeed, war goals were that clear and that simple to state.  For that war, we relied on uncontroversial an equitable draft of citizen-soldiers to share the burdens of defense. (Do you agree on that simplistic statement?)

Contrast this with our current 1% wars.  In them, 99 percent of Americans have no stake.

The 1% who do are largely ID-card-carrying members of what President Dwight D. Eisenhower so memorably called the “military-industrial complex” in 1961.

In the half-century since, that web of crony corporations, lobbyists, politicians and retired military types, who have passed through Washington’s revolving door, has grown ever more gargantuan and tangled, engorged by untold trillions devoted to a national security and intelligence complex that seemingly dominates Washington.

They are the ones who, in turn, have dispatched another 1 percent — the lone percent of Americans in our All-Volunteer Military — to repetitive tours of duty fighting endless wars abroad.

The mission behind our wars of choice is nebulous, confusing, and in constant flux.  Is it a fight against terror (which, as so many have pointed out, is in any case a method, not an enemy)?

A fight for oil and other strategic resources?

A fight to spread freedom and democracy?

A fight to build nations?

A fight to show American resolve or make the world safe from al-Qaeda?

Who really knows anymore, now that Washington seldom bothers to bring up the “why” question at all, preferring simply to fight on without surcease?

In wars of choice, there are no criteria with which to measure success, let alone determine an endpoint.  We could elect to leave whenever we wanted or whenever the heat got too high, as is currently the case in Iraq (even if we are leaving behind a fortress embassy the size of the Vatican with a private army of 5,000 rent-a-guns to defend it).

We could elect to leave, as we are likely to do in Afghanistan, sometime in the years after the 2012 presidential election.  The choice is ours.  The people without a choice are of course the Iraqis and Afghans whom we’ll leave to pick up the pieces.

Even our vaunted Global War on Terror is a war of choice.  Think about it: Who has control over our own terror: us or our enemies?  We can only be terrorized in the first place if we choose to give in to fear. For example, what of the “shoe bomber” in 2001 and the “underwear bomber” in 2009?

Why did the criminally inept actions of these two losers garner so much attention (and fear-mongering) in the American media?

We allowed more American treasure to be poured into technology and screening systems that may never even have caught a terrorist.  We consented to be to on surveillance ever more, and consulted ever less.  We chose to reaffirm our terrors every time we doffed our shoes or submitted supinely to being scoped or groped at our nation’s airports.

Our distant permanent wars, our 1% wars of choice, will remain remote from our emotions and our thinking, requiring few sacrifices except from our troops, who grow ever more remote from our polity.  This is especially true of America’s young adults, between 18 and 29 years of age, who are the least likely to have family members in the military, according to a recent Pew Research Center study.

The result?  An already emergent warrior-caste might grow ever more estranged from the 99%, creating tensions and encouraging grievances that quite possibly could be manipulated by that other 1 percent: the power-brokers  money-makers, and string-pullers, already so eager to call out the police to bully and arrest occupy movements in numerous cities across this once-great land.

Our Military or Their Military?

As we fight wars of choice in distant lands for ever-shifting goals, what if “our troops” simply continue to grow ever more remote from us?  What if they become “their” troops?  Is this not the true terror we should be mobilizing as a nation to prevent?  The terror of separating our military almost totally from our nation — and ourselves.

As Admiral Mike Mullen, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, put it recently to Time: “In the Long term, if the military drifts away from its people in this country, that is a catastrophic outcome we as a country can’t tolerate.”

Behold a horrifying fate: a people that allows its wars of choice to compromise the very core of its self-image as a freedom-loving society, while letting itself be estranged from the young men and women who served in the front lines of these wars.

Here’s an American fact: the 99% are far too remote from our wars of choice and those who fight them.  To reclaim the latter, we must end the former.

And that’s a war of necessity that has to be fought — and won.” End of quote

Has the unemployed reached 20%?  Then what?

Government statistics on unemployment rates never acknowledge that the effective unemployed is over 20% of the total workforce.  The statistics are always recorded to be below 12%, no matter what it takes in pressures, tempering, or censorship of real number.  Why?

In a semi steady-state developed capitalist system, a 20% joblessness rate represents 12% of the lower middle class (LMC) being out of earning power.  I explained in the previous article “Public enemy #1:  Lower middle class”, how a capitalist system views, categorizes, and identifies  LMC and how it considers it to be the most virulent and potent power to demanding reforms: especially, fairer representation in the political system in order to revisiting laws tailored-made to satisfying the interest of the richest 10% of the population, which is hoarding 50% of the total wealth of a nation.

In summary, the lower middle class LMC has tasted the fruits of consumerism economy and is not going back to the previous conditions of humiliation, indignities, and starvation by all means possible.  LMC represents 70% of the internal buying power of consumerism goods and services and is targeted by credit card companies to accumulating debt on purchases at 20% interest rate.

LMC families constitute 50% of the population and over 60% of the work force.  LMC is mostly educated at the high school level and enjoys health care benefits and wants to acquire its first home.  The rank and file of the military machine is composed of mostly LMC citizens.

Basically, the military is a political institution meant to quickly absorb unemployed LMC in period of economic downturn and to releasing them to the workforce pool in the rare economic upturns.

This article is meant to demonstrating that almost all wars, since the advent of industrial capitalist age, which consolidated its power on the economic and social structures, had the main purpose of absorbing the unemployed LMC in order to safeguarding the internal security of the system represented by the 10% richest class.

These wars were either expansion wars, preemptive wars, or “national wars” (for example, against Spain, Japan, Germany…) depending on the seriousness of the rate of joblessness in the LMC.  In economic downturn and high unemployed citizens, the Federal government or Centralized government has two options, both of them directly related to safeguarding the interest and privileges of the elite 10% richest class.

Either the elite class is cornered to ceding privileges and extending fairer representation, proportional to class number; or venturing into some sort of wars (which is the norm) in order to absorb the overflow of unemployed in the military and creating an illusion of  economic growth and recovery by supplying the military campaigns. Thus, wars are quick and dirty options to rounding up the pool of unemployed LMC and finding them a relief outlet outside the confine of the country.

In the 1840’s, the city of New York experience the worst outbursts of the unemployed.  The Federal government squashed the uprising by navy canons and the landing of the marines and army.  This solution was short-lived since the unemployed had no outlet.  The Federal government opened the expansion west in order to offering free lands for the LMC.  This initial push westward failed because the American Indians demonstrated resilience and the LMC returned to the “safety” of urban centers.

Thus, the Federal government looked toward the southern States for an outlet to the unemployed.  Again, this tactic failed for two main reasons:  First, the LMC had no idea what kind of jobs they can secure in States focused on intensive workforce done by “negro” slaves; and second, the southern States, composed of feudal large landowners, realized that the Federal government is trying to export its brand of capitalism and refused to cooperate.

Consequently, the federal government launched a civil war under the banner of “preserving the central government”.  It was not a war for freeing the slavery system in the south:  emancipation laws remained on paper and slavery resumed for over another century.  One million in war casualties and four years later, capitalism made a slow headway in the southern parts.  But it was not enough for the thousand of released soldiers to finding work outlets.   Thus, the Federal government, encumbered by great quantities of arms and ammunition and so many soldiers, reopened the push westward and southward (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona):  The American Indians were exterminated in order to securing an outlet for the unemployed “gringos”.

An interesting smart gimmick was played by the “northern capitalists”:  They extended the concept of gold currency when the south had no gold left for exchange.  The southern States countered with the “Greenback” currency (the dollar); an offer that suited capitalists swell:  Expanding by paper money that they printed.

In the Old World of western Europe, England and France reached high levels of industrial capitalism:  The unemployed were sent to colonize Africa and Asia.  After Germany finished its unification at the expense of the Austria Empire,  Germany became another super industrial capitalist State.

France and England denied Germany any colonial expansion.  Germany waged war against France in order to rob Belgium and the Netherlands of their colonies in central Africa (Congo) and Indonesia.  Nine million in war casualties and four years later, and another 20 million dead from the deadly “Spanish” flu, three empires disintegrated (Russia, Austria, and the Ottoman Turkey) and three new empires were created (USA, Italy, and Japan) for another round in WWII.

Interestingly, the Bolshevik revolution led by Lenin didn’t rely of the “proletariat” as it claimed, but on the unemployed LMC who were disintegrating fast after the crushing military defeats against Germany.  I can go on with the 115 modern wars after the establishment of the United nations in 1946.  I leave it to you to do the research based on this vast highway that I opened on the main cause of wars in capitalist systems.

Note: Let me explain how I comprehend the class structure in capitalist systems in order to drive my point through.  The lowest class  of the downtrodden, the illiterate immigrants, and the daily workers at kept at the 20% level of the population and used for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the system at the minimum wage: The lowest class is considered as the “Black slaves” (regardless of color)  by the elite oligarchic class of the disgustingly richest 1% hoarding 30% of the total wealth of the nation.   The middle class (divided among the lower, middle, and upper) middle classes represent 70%  of the population;  the lower middle class (LMC)  constitutes 70% of the middle class sections.  The richest class of 10% hoards 50% of the wealth of the nation and view the LMC as the “White slaves”.  When a government claims that unemployment has reached say 10% it means that the lowest middle class is suffering most of the unemployment rate of 6%; given that the daily workers are not factored in the statistics.

It is to the advantage of most of the citizens in capitalist society that effective unemployment increases to beyond 20%  in order for serious reforms to be considered and enacted in forms of laws and financial institutions control, restrictions, and constraints.  The trick is for the people not to be driven into an external war in order to releasing the pressures off the oligarchic class.

Note 1:  When a government starts drastic cut in the budget (except the military: It goes without saying) it affects primarily the lower middle class, since the 20% of downtrodden are already suffering at the bare minimum, are needed for the daily maintenance of the society, and cannot contribute to taxes.  Actually, the class of the downtrodden feels helpless and waits for the middle class to begins marching revolts and to join it and scare the richest class and their political, security forces, legal, and law institutions for a short while.  When unemployment jumps to 20%  it affects 12% of the lower middle class then, serious problems await the power-to-be in capitalist systems:  This number of 10% of unemployed lower middle class is a critical turning point for serious upheaval and revolts.

Note 2:  Are you interested how capitalism identifies you?  For example, in which economic class you are categorized for being watched closely? For example, the potential level of danger for destabilizing an exploiting system during economic downturn and how you are getting organized to adjust it to a fairer political representative system?  First, check the statistics of the medium yearly income of all the population in the nation.  The medium statistics means that half the population is below the medium and the other half earn above the medium.  The medium yearly income is smack  within the lower middle class category.   The range of the LMC is from 20% below medium and 20% above the medium.

Note 3 :  The primary purpose of most of the new Federal security agencies (over 295 created since 2002) is not for tracking terrorist activities as publicly announced but to keeping track of internal activities of the lower middle class citizens; they are in fact backing up the FBI for keeping files on the virulent elements and organizational ability.   The Federal agencies want to research the trends and mood of this dangerous class during economic downturn and political upheaval.

Note 4:  Capitalist system maintains agricultural subsidies to large farmers for a basic purpose:  satisfied “peasants” constitute internal “outposts” that hold on to the doctrine of “Law and Order” imposed by the capitalists to securing the system from any deviations.
