Documentary movies on civil wars; (Written in 2005 and posted on August 17, 2009)

I am mining my diary.

From September 21 to 25, 2005, The City Theater (Masrah El Madina), in Hamra (Lebanon) and located at the former movie theater called Saroula, exhibited documentaries from different regions of the world dealing with civil wars.

These documentaries of about 90 minutes each and free of charge covered the start of the civil war in Lebanon between 1975-76 by Volker Schlondorff and called “Circle of Deceit”, and from Bosnia by Laurent Becue-Renard entitled “War-Wearied”, then about Rwanda by Anne Aghion, and about Chechnya by Johann Freidt, then about Kurdish Iraq close to the border with Turkey by Bahman Ghobadi called “Turtles can Fly”, and culminating with the atrocities of Sabra and Chatilla, initiated by Israel while occupying Beirut in 1982, by Borgmann, Slim and Theissen.

I attended the first two and the last two documentaries and missed the ones on Rwanda and Chechnya because my back pain exacerbated and prevented me from driving my shift car; I could not convince anyone to drive me there, a 30 minutes drive, and to join me to watch these rare showings.

I liked “Turtles can Fly” best among the ones that I was fortunate to see.  This documentary show how the Kurdish children, mostly crippled, in a refugee camp manage to follow a leader their age in order to survive by organizing themselves in groups removing land mines and selling them.

The 14 years old leader falls in love with a 13 years old refugee girl from Halabja (the town that they say Saddam pounded with poisonous gas). You must know the town in Iraq bordering Iran which was exterminated chemically by Saddam Hussein during his war with Iran.

The girl has been raped in her destroyed home town by a few Iraqi soldiers then gave birth to a blind boy whom she hates and tried at least 4 times to murder her child only to be saved by the children.

She succeeded by drowning her bastard child and then jumped from a cliff. The whole camp and surrounding towns were relying on the kid leader to provide them with a satellite dish in order to follow the impending war by the USA against Saddam Hussein only to be faced by news in English.

I guess the cable Al Jazeera must have been a mane for them, later on, because it provided coverage in Arabic. The movie ends by the proclamation of the fall of Saddam and the return of refugees to their hometowns.

The documentary about the massacre of Sabra and Chatila tries to extract eye witness testimonies from 7 Christian militias who participated in the massacre.  The perpetrators claimed that, in the beginning, they were ignorant wretched kids of 15 when they were driven to take part in the war and they are still wretched adults and still addicted to drugs and as poor as can be.

They were addicted to Neoprene, LSD, and half a dozen drugs which were abundant during the civil war and were actually distributed freely.

These murderers affirm that Israel planned this massacre to the minutes details, providing transportation, logistics, driving the bulldozers, digging the huge pit near the Camille Chamoun stadium to bury the more than 2000 dead bodies, providing the plastic bags for the last three layers of bodies dumped in the pit and the chemicals to squelch the putrefied odors and lighting the areas during the night for the militias to resume their rampage.

At 6:30 a.m. the next morning these killers witnesses a few of their colleagues executing Palestinians over the pit, ordering the living Palestinians to throw the dead into the pit, knowing very well that they are next to be shot.

One of the killers was a butcher by profession and he opted to slaughter his victims.

One of the murderers kept a vivid picture of slain beautiful horses and wondering why innocent animals had to be killed.

The orders came directly from Israeli officers and the high command of the Lebanese Forces, among them Elie Hobeika, Maroun Machaalani, and George Malek.

Maroun ordered them that every one in the camp is to die, man, women and newly born babies so that Elie Hobeika could construct a fine garden in these razed places.

Most of the killers were trained in Israel for at least 6 months before Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982.

One of them said that, at one point, in their military training in Israel they were driven to Eilat to a nude beach.

One morning, a female Israeli officer showed up stark naked and ordered them to undress completely for the morning training.  These fighters have never seen a naked girl before and were utterly embarrassed to obey such an order, but they ended up jogging totally naked along the length of the nude beach.

They claimed that they feared their fathers and would have respected their dads’ orders but unfortunately, it was their fathers who encouraged them to pursue war trainings and get involved in the fighting.

We have to pity these mothers who married the worst kind of husbands; more on that first showing of the film later on.

The film on Bosnia review the psychological rehabilitation of 4 mothers, for a whole year, in a special surrounding after their husbands and families were massacred.

After the rehabilitation they were supposed to go back to their home towns to restart their lives.  Now, consider the wonder of the Lebanese experience of sending back people to their home towns just because money has been disbursed for reconstructing their destroyed homes.  Why do you think only 13% returned?

Joanna has started her European tour on the first of the month and will last for the duration of the month. She purchased her Schingen train ticket in Lebanon for about $600.

Janna will be visiting Germany where she will drop her girl friend at the university then on to Belgium, then France, then Italy, then Spain, then Holland for an interview to a graduate graphic design program next year, and back to Paris and lastly returning from Germany.

She has been forwarding email news from time to time but I got the news from her mother (sister) Raymonde when she is in a talkative mood.

It appears that Joanna wrapped her arms with toilet paper so that they let her in the Vatican, and after another failure to enter she crossed over to the nearby merchant, cursed him for his high priced shawls that are not worth a dime, then paid him 3 euros for a shawl instead of 15, then snatched it and fled inside the Vatican.

She was invited by a taxi driver at Venice to stay overnight at his house and he gave her a tour of Venice the next morning for free.

By the way, taxi drivers take home 600 euro a day.  No doubt that this exclusive trip on the canals will be the most memorable adventure in her life.

Cedric has been working his ass off as a trainee in the management program at the Sheraton Hotel in Verdun. He finally got a sort of a girl friend. He spent a whole day at her bungalow in Delb Country Club and took her to Kfarselwan, a summer retreat of his uncle Nicolas.

Kfarselwan is 1600 meters above sea level and Cedric slept over night under a genuine nomad “bedouin” huge tent made of goat skins. I did not ask him if she slept over too.

William spent at least a whole week, days and nights, backing up his hard disks and those of Joanna’s.  He used up 43 DVDs’ for that purpose, each with a capacity of 4.7 gigabytes.

Most of the files are audio-visual, digital photos, animations and graphic and architectural design projects.  My more than a thousand pages of word processing files would occupy a meager space on a lousy CD.

The LAU engineering departments at Byblos is hard pressed this year.  There are no enrolments, even for major courses and thus might cancel many required course this fall.

The industrial engineering department hired a visiting professor to teach operations research courses; these courses were taken away from full time faculty members.

I told the chairman that I can generate 50 students to enroll in my elective course of “Risk assessment and occupational safety” if they offer it this fall, but it was clear that they didn’t considered this course to fit strictly in an engineering program. They will create a new course called “Reliability” to fill the quota for a faculty member.

I called up the chairman of engineering at AUST and told him that I could teach 5 of his courses in the BS curriculum.  He told me that these courses are slated to be graduate courses and not about to be offered any time soon.

Testimonies of atrocities in Gaza from the Russell Tribunal

Watch these testimonies

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine convened an emergency session in Brussels last month to examine whether Israel committed war crimes in the besieged Gaza Strip during “Operation Protective Edge,” the summertime military assault that killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, including more than 500 children, injured more than 11,000 and left Gaza in ruins.

Israeli soldiers were ordered to execute any Palestinian witness who could understand the criminal orders of the officers?

After hearing testimony from journalists, eyewitnesses, legal scholars and physicians present during the onslaught, the twelve-member jury, made up of world-renowned intellectuals and international law experts, found Israel guilty of “war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of murder, extermination and persecution and also incitement to genocide.”

Though it was virtually ignored by both mainstream and progressive media outlets, the tribunal was significant in that it did what the so-called international community has time and again refused to do.

The Russell Tribunal put Israel on trial for its crimes against Palestinians.

Incitement to Genocide

Journalist David Sheen delivered a horrifying presentation on incitement to genocide within Israeli society, which was consumed by genocidal rhetoric from top Israeli government officials to the lynch mobs barreling down the streets of Jerusalem shouting “death to Arabs.”

Sheen’s testimony stunned the jury, concluding that absent outside intervention and accountability, the potential for genocide is likely.

“In light of the clear escalation in the physical and rhetorical violence deployed in respect of Gaza in the summer of 2014, the tribunal emphasizes the obligation of all states parties to the 1948 Genocide Conventionto take such action under the Charter of the United Nations as they consider appropriate for the prevention and suppression of acts of genocide,” the judges implore in their final ruling.

“It is recognized that in a situation where patterns of crimes against humanity are perpetrated with impunity, and where direct and public incitement to genocide is manifest throughout society, it is very conceivable that individuals or the state may choose to exploit the conditions in order to perpetrate the crime of genocide,” they warn.

And  adding, “We [sic] have a genuine fear that in an environment of impunity and an absence of sanction for serious and repeated criminality, the lessons from Rwanda and other mass atrocities may once again go unheeded.”

Grisly executions

Journalist Max Blumenthal delivered powerful testimony on evidence of war crimes he gathered while in Gaza following a five-day ceasefire in mid-August.

Blumenthal described in vivid detail the grisly executions he documented of civilians, paramedics and fighters carried out by invading Israeli soldiers.

He also highlighted several instances of Israeli soldiers summarily executing older men in Gaza after learning they spoke Hebrew, leading to speculation that soldiers were ordered to eliminate anyone capable of understanding their commands. (The soldiers were to execute witnesses who could understand the criminal orders of the officers?)

Blumenthal posted a transcript of his testimony here.

Kidnappings and human shields

Gaza-based journalist Mohammed Omer described to the jury the crimes he witnessed and reported on in Gaza as well as the hardships of daily life under siege (see video of his testimony at the top of this post).

He cited summary executions, kidnappings of Palestinian men at gunpoint and the use of Palestinian civilians as human shields by invading Israeli soldiers in the now obliterated farming community of Khuzaa.

Omer was the only Palestinian eyewitness that made it out of Gaza to attend the session.

Raji Sourani, director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, and filmmaker Ashraf Mashharawi were scheduled to testify but the Egyptian military regime prevented them from leaving through the Rafah crossing.

Deliberate and systematic

Renowned Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert presented the jury with descriptions and photos of the gruesome injuries he witnessed while working at the overwhelmed al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City at the peak of Israel’s latest bombing campaign, which marked the fourth time since 2006 that Gilbert has operated in Gaza during an Israeli military attack.

Outlining the devastation inflicted on Gaza’s health sector, Gilbert emphasized his admiration for the medical workers who risk their lives repairing the bodily damage caused by Israel’s “deliberate, systematic attack on the Palestinian civilian society.”

Taken together, the testimonies presented at the Russell Tribunal (all of which can be viewed here) demonstrate a clear pattern of intentional destruction of Gaza and its people by an increasingly extreme settler-colonial state “primed for genocide,” as Max Blumenthal put it.

Genocide does not happen overnight or in a vacuum.

There are warning signs, many of which were raised at the Russell Tribunal.

Israel has been destroying and erasing Palestine for more than six decades in an effort to consolidate and maintain a demographically engineered Jewish majority in an area that is historically Palestinian.

As long as countries including the United States continue to unconditionally shower Israel with weapons while shielding its leaders from accountability on the international stage, Israel’s destruction of Palestine will not only continue, it will intensify.

So the question becomes, how bad do the atrocities need to get before the world puts a stop this madness?

Desmond Tutu: Save The International Criminal Court (ICC)

In 2 days, African leaders could vote to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, crippling one of the world’s best hopes for confronting genocide and crimes against humanity. I know together we can stop this. Join me in urging the voices of reason within the African Union to stand up for justice and accountability — let’s protect this great institution:

SIGN THE PETITION

In just 2 days time, African leaders could kill off a great institution, leaving the world a more dangerous place.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is the world’s first and only global court to adjudicate crimes against humanity.

The leaders of Sudan and Kenya, who have inflicted terror and fear across their countries, are trying to drag Africa out of the ICC, allowing them the freedom to kill, rape, and inspire hatred without consequences.

I know that together we can change this.

We have to join hands and call on the voices of reason at the African Union (AU) – Nigeria and South Africa – to speak out and ensure that the persecuted are protected by the ICC.

In my years of work, life and travel, the fight for justice has been a long and arduous one. I have seen the very worst in Darfur and Rwanda, but also the very best with the reconciliation in South Africa.

During this journey, I have seen great gains made that protect the weak from the strong and give us all hope. The ICC is one of these beacons of hope.

This threat to the ICC started precisely because the court was doing its job. It charged Kenya’s Deputy President for killing people who rallied against him during an election and Sudan’s President for murdering women and children in Darfur.

Now Kenya and Sudan are lobbying all of Africa to pull out of the court and destroy its chance of success.

But in Darfur, Congo, Cote D’Ivoire and Kenya, the ICC has played a key role in bringing hope to those terrified by the armies, militias and madmen that have waged war against the innocent. It’s a light in the darkness that cannot be allowed to go out.

The main argument by some leaders with a guilty conscience is that the ICC is a Western witch-hunt as most of the investigations have happened in Africa. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

The the ICC was an institution that was created by 20 African countries, 5 of the court’s 18 judges are African and the chief prosecutor is African.

Friday is a key judgement day.
Will our African leaders stand on the side of justice or injustice? With survivors and fallen victims or with tyrants and oppressors?

This is the moment to choose. Join me in calling on African leaders to stand on the side of justice and support the International Criminal Court:

I’ve seen some of the brightest moments in human history, moments where we together brought hope to so many. This is our chance to do that again, together.

Join me by adding your name to the petition now and share it with everyone — when we have hit 1 million our petition will be delivered straight into the AU conference hall where Africa’s leaders are meeting in Addis Ababa (capital of Ethiopia).

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/justice_for_africa_icc/?bFAfecb&v=30068

With hope and appreciation for this community,

Desmond Tutu

Note: So far, the ICC has been manipulated by the superpower forces to reach political objectives. However, it is an excellent tool to any public criminal who still believe that the superpowers will save him in the long run from justice, as politics is ever changing, and the ICC will be called upon to deliver “justice”.

The “How-la” massacre: Where is this town of 7awla? In Syria?

Every single State in the Near-East has one or several towns named Houla. Houla is the female description of a woman having screwed up eyes. The male description is A7wal… Palestine has a Houla, and it was conquered and occupied by Israel in 1948. The Al Houla in this post is situated in the district of Homs in Syria.

It appears that the three most savage massacres in Syria took place in the district of Homs, where the armed radical Islamist insurgents, funded by the Wahabbi Saudi Arabia monarchy and Qatar, are concentrated…

From what I gathered, the story is:

Al Houla is a collection of 5 mostly Sunni Moslem villages having many minorities such as Shia and Christians, and surrounded by 3 Alawi Moslem villages. The Syrian army controls the main access roads to Al Houla.

The radical Islamic insurgents managed to infiltrate and occupy one of the Al Houla villages Ras Dawr, with heavy concentration of Shia inhabitants . The German daily Der Spiegel mentioned Mahmood as the leader of the insurgents coming from outside the region.

This Sunni village does not support the insurgent activities, especially that the local leader is deputy in the Parliament.

The first version is that the insurgents conducted a frontal attack on the Syrian army outposts and were cut down in pieces. They tried to lure the Syrian army inside the village, but the army refrained from advancing.

The insurgents decided to massacre all the extended family members of the deputy: A textbook tactic “example” to cow other villages.

The insurgent vacated the town. The western media want us to believe that the Alawi inhabitants in the surrounding villages came down and committed the massacre of the “children”.

This is a typical textbook “Political Terrorist Massacre”: Kofi Anan (UN special envoy) was scheduled to meet with President Assad on Monday and Anan had proclaimed that the regime is cooperating fully with the 200 UN observers…

The dark professional terrorists got the order to disturb the meeting of Anan with Bashar and preempt any positive proclamation of any UN success stories for the process…

Maybe the inhabitants of the Alawi villages came down to Al Houla, but the massacre of the children was committed by the terrorists insurgents before the people reached Al Houla…

Two investigative teams are working on the massacre: The UN observers and the Syrian regime. Even Kofi Anan refused to confirm the western media version.

This massacre is political in nature: Canada and Australia (political satellites to USA foreign affairs policies) immediately closed Syria embassies before even the investigation started…and Turkey and Japan followed suit…There are a dozen small island States that vote for any US decision in the UN: Their representatives don’t even have to be at the UN at any given moment…the US takes care of the process…

Countless massacres were committed for political exigencies as breakthroughs were contemplated during civil wars.

The UN says 108 people were killed in the onslaught, 49 of them children under the age of 10, and the youngest was a 2-year-old girl. Al Houla is not even a major massacre.

This picture shows the bloodied bodies of dozens of innocent children, brutally murdered, last Friday

Remember:

1.  Srebrenica in Bosnia (a province of former Yugoslavia ): 8,000 civilian killed and the French UN troops vacated the large town a day before the genocide

2. Sabra and Chatila Palestinian camps in Lebanon by Israel and the “Christian militias: 3,000 civilians killed during two nights and two days. All the armed Palestinian fighters were forced to vacate Lebanon a week ago. Three thousands were “transferred” by busses and Israeli military trucks, never to be heard of them again…

3. Deir Yassin in Palestine: 250 civilian killed by the terrorist Zionist movement in 1948, and all the remaining inhabitants taken to concentration camps in Galilee

4. Haifa. A major city in Palestine that the Zionist army surrounded and invaded as the British army was preparing to sail in 1948…

5. Tel Al Zaatar Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon: 2,000 civilian killed the day the “Christian” armed militias, backed by the Syrian forces, entered the camp after an entire month of a  complete siege. Hundreds of children died during the siege of thirst and famine and diseases…

6. The Karantina (quarantine) slum in Beirut Lebanon. Thousands of minorities (Kurds, Palestinians, Lebanese, Iraqis, Syrians…) were working and living in this slum in 1976 : 400 civilian killed and thousands forced to transfer by the “Christian” Phalange Party

7. Jenine Palestinian camp in the West Bank: Israel army invaded and entered this camp in 2003, after three days of shelling and drove tanks over living people. Over 2,000 Palestinians killed and murdered in cold blood…

8. May Li in Viet Nam 1968: US soldiers massacred and burned an entire rice growers village with fire-spitting blowers

These children in Al Houla were slaughtered under strict orders to sow terror.

The world looked away with Srebrenica, with Rwanda (one million killed within two weeks while the French troops were there), with Cambodia (2 million killed within three years). Over 100,000 Libyans killed during the uprising against Qadhafi, about the same numbers in Yemen. Over 200,000 Iraqi civilians killed during the US invasion of 2003. Over 150,000 Lebanese civilians during the 17 years old civil war…

Note 1: The Syrian insurgents took hostage a dozen Shia Lebanese pilgrims who crossed from Turkey into Syria. After the level-headed speech of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasr Allah demanding that no harms be done to Syrians working in Lebanon in retaliation to the kidnapping, Turkey delayed the release of the Lebanese hostages, and they are still in detention in Turkey…

Note 2: on natural versus acquired kinds of violence: https://adonis49.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/is-violence-increasing-natural-versus-developed-violence/

Bigotry and indolence: What a miserable couple

Apparently, Western Europeans and Jews of  “noble classes” were sent to Buchenwald, whereas Eastern Europeans, the gypsies, and the poorer Jews from the ghettos and shtetl were shipped to the Polish concentration camp of Auschwitz.  Many Jews in Auschwitz were directed to gas chambers while the prisoners in Buchenwald mostly died of famine, diseases, and poor health.  Prisoners in Buchenwald had a higher probability of surviving and returned from the camps in the shape of skeletal.  The Zionist movement named the Shoah to mean only the returning Jews from Nazi camps.

The Western media would like to repeat that “Arabs” (always lumped together regardless of States or religions or locations) are blind to the Shoah.  First, no Jews in “Arab” lands were sent to concentration camps in order for them to see returning Jews from the Shoah.

Second, the few returning Jews who immigrated to Palestine were isolated in agricultural collectivities or members of terrorist Zionist groups such as the Irgun, Stern, or the Haganah.  The returning Jews were terrorizing and harassing Palestinians in their towns and villages and massacring all of them, children and women.  The only returning Jews that the Palestinians might have seen were wearing guns and demolishing their homes without warning, the random violence tactics of terror organizations.

Third, the “Arabs” were prisoners in their own Ottoman caste system and suffered isolation and ignorance for over five centuries.  They barely saw the next town communities!  The Western nation governments and colonial powers never raised any monument for the suffering Arab and Palestinian Shoah, or cared to establishing a homeland for them.

They say that Zionism encourages Jews to be blinded by the Shoah.  Most probably, it is the Western media and governments doing their best to demonstrate outrageous penitence by supporting all kinds of horrible activities against human rights by the Israeli State.

Apartheid policies of Israel against Palestinians (the other miserable face of the Shoah)  are not deemed that serious to be condemned at the UN or economic,  financial, and military embargoes levied against Israel.  The new generations of Jews in Israel are tired of constant reminders of the holocaust and succumbing to another one.  They want out of the three years military service and killing as many Palestinians at point-blank.

In 1982, Lebanon was suffering a terrible civil war.  Lebanese killing one another, Palestinians killing one another and Syria had invaded Lebanon at the urge of the US.  And here you have Israel Menahem Begin PM proclaiming: “Israel must invade Lebanon or suffer another Auschwitz.”  What?  What Auschwitz had to do with a preemptive war that permitted Israel to occupying South Lebanon for 25 years?  Israel frequently deliver the stupidest reasons for invading neighboring  “Arab” States.

Zionism insists that “The Shoah is our pain and our affair; a secret that nobody else can comprehend”.  What, Armenians cannot comprehend their plight and shouldn’t have their own “secret”? What about the Slaves, the Gypsies, the homosexuals and the many minorities that died in Nazi concentration camps?  What about the current holocaust in Rwanda, Congo, Pakistan, Kosovo, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Palestine, and Lebanon?

Regis Debray should revise a long paragraph that sounds infamous to the Palestinians.  He wrote: “You see pictures of a Palestinian child getting out of a cave with arms raised; an old decrepit man on the ground being kicked by Israeli soldiers; an old woman in tattered cloth with joined hands imploring an Israeli soldier (to releasing her kid or letting her cross a barrier to go to a hospital)… The difference is that all these Palestinians are not going to any gas chambers.  They will serve ten years of prison without any due judicial procedures, they will get out crippled and handicapped, but they are not sent to gas chambers”

This is how Western writers have to apologize for the Shoah and their devoid meaning of penitence.

The British and French mandated powers in the Middle-East, along with their protegé the Zionist movement, were the initiator of random violence, of creating terror organizations, and planning and executing countless genocides, years before Nazi Germany came to power and emulated and fine-tuned their programs of crimes against humanity.

Fact is, Nazi Germany learned and assimilated the previous methods of humiliating indigenous people, applied by the British, French, and Zionist criminal organizations in Palestine and Syria. Fact is, Nazi Germany applied the racist check-list administered by the US to the immigrants, flocking to the land of “The Free”.

Do you remember the carpet bombing of Dresden in Germany?  Over 150,000 German civilians were burned carbonized by tons of phosphorous bombs.  Dresden had no military headquarters, no military factories, no industries…and it was destroyed to the ground.

Do you remember the carpet bombing in Viet Nam, Beirut, Gaza, Iraq…? Israel is still using phosphorous bombs in Lebanon and recently in Gaza (2008), as well as cluster bombs, 4 million of them peppered in south Lebanon in 2006…

They were the Masters of ignominious activities and still are.  The western powers and Israel may frequently try hard to sweep under the carpet their consistent tendency for criminal activities against the developing people, through intermediaries and mercenaries.  They are still funding, training, and planning for random violence through factions of religious extremists and racist mercenaries.

The citizens of the Free World are making the effort to going beyond indolence and bigotry to confronting the sustained efforts of the colonial mentality of apartheid. The citizens of the emerging Free World don’t want anything to do with humiliating the developing people to the altar of the vested interests of the 1% richest classes…

“The murderer as he talks” by Nasri Sayegh (Part 3, January 3, 2009)

The dead were collected in the streets of Tripoli as Arafat tried a second come back to Lebanon in 1984.  The dead were packed in plastic bags and sold to the relatives.  A poor woman recognized her dead baby and she was asked to purchase it.  She fainted and the “good” guys helped her to recover consciousness but refused to deliver her baby.

A column of elder people of all genders was pushed to advance into a mine field. When the column slowed down the rear column was decimated with machine guns.

Asaad Shaftary, the remorseful Phalange leader, testified that the Christian forces planned to poison the potable water in West Beirut so that the Moslem population could be reduced by 500,000 in order to re-establish a confessional balance in Lebanon.

Asaad said that many Maronite fighting groups were solely constituted of members of rich families because they refused to fight along side the other poorer social strata; they fought mostly at night, they had their own command, and  they were ferocious and executed their orders efficiently.

Mona Sokarieh interviewed many scores of youths on barricades in West Beirut and from all confession Sunni Moslem, Shiaa Moslem, Druze, Christian and even secular fighters.  The common denominators among those youth killers are that they are mostly un-educated, barely can read or write, had no idea what is fascism, Nazism, socialism, federalism, or any concept that their warlord leaders were claiming to fight for.

Most of them started when they were barely 13-year of age and they love to carry their weapons.  They have been engaged in fights, and killed prisoners and they are not that remorseful or apologetic.  They all obey and worship their warlords and their ideology is non-existent if not confused out of ignorance.

There have been many genocide occurrences in the last century; the Armenians, the Jews, the Cambodians, and the Rwandans; not counting the apartheid systems in South Africa and Rhodesia, the colonial massacres by the French of the Algerians, the massacres of the Zionist State of the Palestinians, the Serbs of the Bosnians, the US of the Iraqis, the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the purposeful famine waves in China and Russia.

In Rwanda, the minority Tutsi tribe was selected by the German colonial power as the most fit to govern the country; then when the French took over they changed their policy and appointed the Hutu tribe to govern.  For over 100 days, the European and the US did not intervene in the genocide that killed over 600,000 Tutsis.

In Cambodia, the ultra “communist” Red Khmer had wide latitude to kill every educated Cambodian or “bourgeoisie” and massacred over one million before Viet Nam had time to breath of its war with the US and enter this country and put an end to the genocide.

The “Indians” of America were massacred because the Protestant clergy declared the Indians not of human type; they were not worth being converted to Christianity.  President Theodore Roosevelt declared in the 20th century that “A good Indian is a dead Indian

The country of Mexico had 15 million inhabitants in the year 1500. After the Spanish conquistadors entered Mexico, the population dropped to 2.5 millions within 50 years. And the population of Peru declined from 9 to 1.3 millions in the same period.

Franco of Spain committed genocide in Morocco but he was forgiven by the Europeans until he transplanted the same technique into “White Europe“.

Juntas of theocratic castes: the under-developed States (November 15, 2008)

There is this general tendency of categorizing the under-developed States on the basis of their economical production of GNP or other criteria related to the economy such as infra-structure, mechanization, availability financial sources, mobility in transportation and others.  These kinds of categorizations are based on consequences and thus obliterate the need to investigate the sources of this under-developed condition.

I am inclined to believe that under-development is fundamentally a socio-political structure.  All the under-developed States adopt to certain extent “junta of theocratic caste” systems in governing and running their States.  I insist on the term theocratic because whatever predominant religions they claim to legally recognize these religions are at best skin deep.  The true religions and sects in under-developed States are variations on “paganism” (I am not offering a bad connotation for the term pagan but a description for the fundamental differences with the religious monotheist system in developed States, including atheism as a right).  Thus, the various tribes are attached to ancestral system of beliefs that are not officially or publicly stated.  These tribes or castes are closed autonomous communities that tend to regard the other tribes as enemies to the survival of their autonomies. The frequent occurrences of genocides in Africa or in Central Europe are fundamentally based on deep rooted theocratic caste systems.  Governments in under-developed States are formed of select castes and the rebellions, revolutions and genocides are outlets to re-shape the institutions according to the victors and governing under a different set of theocratic castes.

The State of Lebanon has undergone several civil wars because its 19 recognized theocratic castes refused to change to a modern structure for governing the State.  Most of the under-developed States that are not predominantly dominated by one recognized religion or sect will be facing recurring civil disturbances and thus lost opportunities for economical stability and development regardless of the magnitude of foreign infusions of money.

Late Mai Ghoussoub mentioned the case of Ngoyambi, a 17-year old of the Hutu tribe in Rwanda, who is facing trial for mass genocide against the Tutsi tribe. Ngoyambi has no remorse and claimed that he won’t be afraid “if the judge is from the Hutu tribe because then he would not be wrongly found guilty”

Before the colonial mandates in Africa or the Soviet hegemony in Eastern and Central Europe there was many skirmishes among the “tribes” but they were governed by social rules and very localized and of countable casualties.  Nowadays, these frequent skirmishes have acquired large scale magnitude in horrors and efficiency because of the despotism of theocratic juntas of castes after the “independence” of these States and the availability of efficient killing equipments sold by arm merchant connections that are themselves subsidized and managed by the superpower central States.

The liberal press and TV networks, in the Western “civilization”, loath to pinpoint the causes of these genocides; they claim that they don’t comprehend how human kind can reach such a low level of behavior.  What don’t you understand?!
