Founder of feminist group Femen is a man — picked the “prettiest girls” to bare breasts

Founder? Because he took pictures of bare breasted girls who turned activist?

28-year-old Australian filmmaker Kitty Green showed her documentary “Ukraine is not a Brothel” at the 2013 Venice film festival after spending a year living with 5 Femen activists. The film shows that a man, Victor Svyatski, is the founder and leader of the protest group of women who expose their breasts.

“It’s his movement… He hand-picked the prettiest girls because the prettiest girls sell more papers. The prettiest girls get on the front page… that became their image, that became the way they sold the brand.”

– Kitty Green, filmmaker
Green’s film was the first time the extent of Svyatski’s influence was revealed. He was previously known as a consultant to the group. Green said he “was quite horrible with the girls” and would call them “bitches.”

“These girls are weak… They don’t have the strength of character. They don’t even have the desire to be strong. Instead, they show submissiveness, spinelessness, lack of punctuality, and many other factors which prevent them from becoming political activists. These are qualities which it was essential to teach them.”

– Victor Svyatski
Svyatski said he had a positive role, despite the paradox of being a “patriarch” of a feminist group. But when asked in the film if he started Femen, “to get girls,” he said, “Perhaps yes, somewhere in my deep subconscious.”

“This is a relief. It shows that at least part of Tunisia’s judiciary is independent.”

Ghazi Mrabet, lawyer for Amina Sboui
Sboui still faces the charge of desecrating a cemetery, which could carry a 2-year sentence. She wrote the word “Femen” on a wall in protest of a meeting of Salafi Muslims. Sboui has said she has faced threats by Salafis for her topless photos. She quit Femen in August, calling the group “Islamophobic.”
