Did You Know? The Sahara Desert
• The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, spanning over 9 million km² — almost the size of China.
• It stretches across 11 North African countries, including Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Niger, and Morocco.
• Some dunes tower over 180 meters (590 feet) — as tall as skyscrapers made of sand.
• Around 6,000 years ago, the Sahara was a green and fertile land, filled with lakes and vegetation.
• Temperatures swing to extremes: over 50 °C (122 °F) by day, dropping to freezing at night.
• Rarely, snow has fallen in parts of the Sahara, such as Algeria.
• Despite its harshness, it’s home to unique desert life, like the fennec fox, camels, snakes, and scorpions.
• Famous dune regions include Erg Chebbi in Morocco and the Great Sand Sea in Egypt.
• Nomadic peoples such as the Tuareg still travel its vast expanse, preserving ancient traditions.
• Beneath the sands lies one of the world’s largest fossil aquifers, a hidden lifeline of water.
The Sahara isn’t just endless sand — it’s a land of extremes, history, and resilience.
