Best of prayer: Every bead in any rosary refers to a person that came to the rescue in a lifetime

Alec Guinness/Interview with James Grissom/1991.

“I was quite taken with the story of Tennessee [Williams] taking the beads of the rosary and using them to recall the women who had been so helpful to him”.

Use your beads to recall all the thousands of people who bestowed an act of kindness to you.

You don’t know their name, you cannot recall their faces…but the act meant something to you.

I did it myself, heretic though I may be. My beads became all of the great acts of kindness that have been shown to me by my friends, the most valuable things I happen to possess.

It was a remarkable act of prayer, and I fell asleep happier than I’ve been in some time.

I would hope to lose every single thing I have before I lost a single friend.”

Many times, I try to recall total strangers who came to the rescue in critical moments and period in my hellish life, abroad with no family members or connections.

I tried not to miss these acts of kindness, nothing in return, in my autobiography.

And I mentioned those wonderful people and women who were of utmost help to I carrying on my existence for survival. I was not handsome and not talkative, but once they got used to me, I became their best friend.

I keep insisting that no one ever lived to be old without those hundreds of strangers who made the difference.
