Are you sick and tired of the Al (THE) coming from Lindsey Graham? This Republican senator from South Carolina?

“Everything that starts with ‘Al’ in the Middle East is bad news,” Graham said at a dinner in Boston on Monday with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee AIPAC , according to investigative journalist Uri Blau.

Graham was referencing the Arabic word for “the.”

Al-Qaida, Al-Nusra, Al-Qaida in the Arab Peninsula,” he continued.

He went on to discuss U.S. relations with Israel and the Arab world, threatening the funding of the United Nations if it “marginalized” Israel.

Graham has been considering a presidential run, and recently laughed while saying that he has so much pro-Israel funding that he would assemble an “all-Jewish cabinet.” (As the all-Jewish towns and cities in Israel?)

“If I put together a finance team that will make me financially competitive enough to stay in this thing…I may have the first all-Jewish cabinet in America because of the pro-Israel funding,” Graham reportedly said, according to the Wall Street Journal.

South Carolina Republican Senator and super-hawk Lindsey Graham wants you to know that he is sick and tired of Arabs using the word “the.”

As Haaretz writes, “the problem — linguistically — with Graham’s comment is that ‘Al’ is the definite article in Arabic (i.e. equivalent to English’s ‘the’), and usually appears before most Arabic proper nouns, especially place and personal names.”

So, for example, “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” (Al-Mamlakah al-Arabiyah as-Sa’ūdiyah) or “the United Arab Emirates” (al-Imārāt al-‘Arabīyah al-Muttaḥhidah) or “the United States of America” (al-Wilāyāt al-Muttaḥidah al-Amrīkīyah) are all, in Arabic, phrases starting with “al.” This is also the derivation of the English word algebra (from al-jabr, the reunion of broken parts).

It’s at least possible that Graham is so ignorant of foreign countries that he doesn’t know this about Arabic — although given his keen interest in foreign policy, and Middle East policy in particular, that’s a bit damning. Alternatively, he maybe just wants to clarify that he thinks anything and everything coming from the Arab world is bad news.

(I too is sick and tired of all these obscurantists monarchs, princes and salafist movements, and Not excluding the worst apartheid and racist State of Israel)

I am sick and tired of “THE” republican senator from South Carolina.
